  6. The December Bad Naturalist newsletter is here, and it has flickers, foggy days, and footprints (well, animal tracks), plus a list of book events & my January radio schedule. Check it out! (The book is out on 1/7 and still available for preorder at your favorite places!)

  9. This large milkweed bug sitting on a milkweed pod is a true bug. Because it's native, the plant tolerates its predation. You can tell it's the "large" version of the bug because of the band across its middle.

  10. The meadow, two months after a prescribed burn. Native plants coming in: crownbeard, milkweed, yarrow, blackberry, wild bergamot, wild strawberry, showy tick trefoil. So far so good.

  11. Advice you'll thank me for later: do not step in bear poop. Avoid!

What I learned: It's the consistency of tar and smells like nothing else you will encounter. Time does not dilute the odor. But 409 works pretty well. Don't worry, #nophoto.
