Thrilled to get to chat with New York Times garden columnist Margaret Roach on her podcast A Way to Garden, about the trials and tribulations of bringing back native meadows, struggles with invasive plants, and how to accept imperfection.

This large milkweed bug sitting on a milkweed pod is a true bug. Because it's native, the plant tolerates its predation. You can tell it's the "large" version of the bug because of the band across its middle.

Found this monarch caterpillar lost in the grass. Not sure how it got there. I carried it to a milkweed plant, and it immediately curled around the stem and looked much more at home.

It turns out I have a lot to say about blackberry plants.

I'm finding more Carolina roses in the meadow this year. (It's the little successes that keep me going.)

The meadow, two months after a prescribed burn. Native plants coming in: crownbeard, milkweed, yarrow, blackberry, wild bergamot, wild strawberry, showy tick trefoil. So far so good.

Orangewing moth. Was excited to see this little creature when it landed on someone's hand. The orange that gives it its name can be seen on its underwing, but not in this photo.
Unfortunately, right after I took the photo, the moth flew directly into my tuna salad and smothered itself. 😫

Advice you'll thank me for later: do not step in bear poop. Avoid!
What I learned: It's the consistency of tar and smells like nothing else you will encounter. Time does not dilute the odor. But 409 works pretty well. Don't worry, #nophoto.
