"The Federal Trade Commission announced a proposed settlement agreeing that General Motors and its subsidiary, OnStar, will be banned from selling geolocation and driver behavior data to credit agencies for five years. That’s good news for G.M. owners. Every car owner and driver deserves to be protected.

Last year, a New York Times investigation highlighted how G.M. was sharing information with insurance companies without clear knowledge from the driver. This resulted in people’s insurance premiums increasing, sometimes without them realizing why that was happening. This data sharing problem was common amongst many carmakers, not just G.M., but figuring out what your car was sharing was often a Sisyphean task, somehow managing to be more complicated than trying to learn similar details about apps or websites."

@rml Not the #Chevrolet #BoltEV, unless you fall for their #OnStar scam. However, that might be why they ended production while they switch to a data-collecting always-connected new platform.

I sold my car via the local #GeneralMotors dealership more than six months ago, yet still receive #Onstar e-mail messages regarding vehicle monitoring. It is actually quite creepy that they continue to send me details on a car that is currently owned by someone else. I logged into my online account to try to stop this, and Onstar won’t let me delete the car. Insanity! #privacy

Supremely annoyed with #Chevrolet as of late. Apparently you have to subscribe to #OnStar to use any of the app-driven capabilities OR see your service history. Meanwhile, #Ford gives me all that free on my truck via #FordPass.

One thing that makes me gunshy of going #EV, it's just how connected an EV is and all the ways they can/do/will nickel-and-dime me after getting one, something already showing up in gassers.
