It is scary to read, in the context of potential Ukranian elections, that the problem with online voting would be the possibility of an attack like the one that happened against Kyivstar phones in december 2023, making the internet inaccessible for 48 hours.
Sure, access attacks are worrisome, but the dangers and attack surfaces on online voting are a lot bigger (and discrete) than that. Assuming that online voting is secure and the only problem is having access to it is dangerous, especially in a country facing the problems Ukraine is living, and attacks from Russia that has a track record in digital attacks and electoral influence.

CW: NZPol online voting
Remember folks, #onlinevoting would be an Atlast Network affiliate's wettest dream.

So the cyclical spectre of #onlinevoting has entered my sphere of awareness again today, after a blissful break of a few months. After rearing its ugly head yet again, I've decided to finally try to write a short-but-sweet explanation of why it's still a really bad idea (with references): https://davelane.nz/onlinevoting

Oh dear. Imagine: an error in an online voting system (a candidate was accidentally left off the ballot)... https://dailyinterlake.com/news/2024/sep/20/ballot-error-shuts-down-montana-online-absentee-voting-system/ It's almost like #onlinevoting is something we just shouldn't even be trying (because it's a fundamentally bad idea).

Interesting. Was talking to someone about #OnlineVoting today, and was trying to track down the company selected by Auckland Council to provide an online voting system for this tender: https://www.gets.govt.nz/AC/ExternalTenderDetails.htm?id=20118254 - if I remember correctly, the chosen vendor was a company called Scytl (not sure how you pronounce it either). Looks like the whole online voting gig mightn't have lived up to their hype: see https://scytl.com ... Pleased we didn't follow through with that deeply flawed idea.

#OnlineVoting is the topic of my presentation to the City Council of #Whitehorse in about 20-40 minutes. My task is to disabuse then if the notion to introduce online #voting at the forthcoming city #election; online voting reduces voter turnout in the long run and reduces voter #trust.

Online voting system in Russia experiences failures. The website mos.ru is down again. Sources report that it's the work of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense. Meanwhile, panic spreads among the Russians online. #Russia #OnlineVoting

@tepunahamatatini curious to know if #onlinevoting was discussed (and, I hope, dismissed for all practical purposes outside, perhaps, of very very limited use by those with disabilities)...

On Friday, 26.1.2024, Florian Moser will be our Research Seminar guest. He will talk about his experiences in designing an application that served as second device for #onlinevoting in the last election of the Gesellschaft für Informatik , @informatik. Florian’s talk is titled: “Verifying your vote: An experience report from developing and operating an independent second device application". The talk will be held hybrid from 1 to 2 pm! Guests are very welcome!

Just listening to Jonathan Mosen advocating for '#onlinevoting' for people with visual (and other) disabilities. https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/2018916416/the-digital-tools-assisting-people-with-visual-impairment I sympathise with his position. His advocacy for phone voting in the general election is quite positive, but then he makes a major leap, suggesting Australia's online voting system is just great & similarly Electionz.com's local system. He's sadly wrong about both. The Electoral Commission should manage local elections & offer phone voting.

What're we going to do to convince young folks it's worth voting in this year's national election here in Aotearoa NZ? (#onlinevoting is not an valid suggestion)
-
@Kugg indeed. And perhaps a bunch of case studies on how completely idiotic #onlinevoting has been shown to be everywhere it's been tried. @pettter

These people continue to be oblivious and/or advised by non-experts. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/484105/online-voting-civics-education-key-to-turnout-turnaround #onlinevoting is *not* a valid answer.

I got a flyer today reminding me to vote in the King Conservation District online election. Tried to do so twice today and got an error both times. Not a great experience. I’ll try tomorrow on my computer. But this is another reason CD elections need to be on the ballot with other contests, not run separately. Anyway, fellow #KingCounty residents, don’t forget to vote — if you can! https://kingcd.org/about/board-of-supervisors/elections-and-appointments/ #WAElex #voting #OnlineVoting #OnlineElection #election #elections #Seattle

On the topic of #onlinevoting - still seeing people on birbsite with major reckons that 'because we can bank on line, we *must* be able to vote online"... These are non-technical people who, have unbounded (blind) faith in technical people to solve all problems... and they're adept at complete rejecting those very same technical people when they tell them quite emphatically "your faith is misguided. It can't be done." Humanity is doomed. Blind faith is not a virtue, it's a character flaw.

In 2015, my friend @[email protected] brilliantly characterised #onlinevoting as a "tantalizing mirage" as we encouraged the Chch Council to abandon its ambition to adopt online voting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQe2fKJZd2Q&t=210s It's still true today. A healthy NZ democracy needs us to follow these steps: https://thespinoff.co.nz/local-elections-2022/10-10-2022/a-10-step-plan-to-reverse-the-absolute-shambles-of-collapsing-local-turnout and abandon the idea of online voting until the info sec people say it's a good idea & tech literacy has expanded to the point that lay people can understand it. And don't call us, we'll call you.

Seems to me a good acid test for distinguishing folks who think of themselves as 'technologists' (e.g. CIOs, pundits, journos) vs. people who actually feel compelled to build stuff, cut code, and live and breath tech is to see how they feel about #onlinevoting.

Lots of folks invoke Estonia when talking up #onlinevoting. They don't realise that Estonia's online voting system has holes in it you could drive a bus through. They're documented (by an internat'l team of infosec specialists) here: https://estoniaevoting.org #notonmywatch

Plucky little Estonia is often held up as a global success story for #onlinevoting... but is it such a innovative pathfinder? This team of international computer security experts set up a website on which they report their findings on Estonia's miracle system... https://estoniavoting.org tl;dr Estonia definitely shouldn't be doing online voting, especially not with their current system.

Luckily for Aotearoa NZ democracy, Gibson and Smith don't run the local government elections. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/475982/local-body-elections-west-coast-leaders-echo-pm-s-low-turnout-concerns Maybe they should listen to the people who can explain, in detail, why #onlinevoting is *not* what they want, nor is it likely to help what they think it will.

Ugh. We need to see some education of Electoral Officers at local councils given that so many seem very gung ho about #onlinevoting (no doubt due to spending a lot of time with their private voting contractor who has an online system to sell... ). To wit: https://www.stuff.co.nz/bay-of-plenty/130054613/council-ceo-calls-for-online-voting-amid-low-turnout-numbers clearly they've never seen https://invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v=abQCqIbBBeM or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abQCqIbBBeM and https://invidious.snopyta.org/watch?v=LkH2r-sNjQs or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkH2r-sNjQs
