University of Texas at Dallas: Study: Elected Officials Tend To Discount Social Media Input. “A University of Texas at Dallas political scientist and his colleagues have found that elected officials put much more stock in in-person communication with their constituents than they do in messages conveyed via social media. The research, published in Public Opinion Quarterly, suggests that a social […]

Ars Technica: DHS keeps trying and failing to unmask anonymous ICE critics online. “The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has backed down from a fight to unmask the owners of Instagram and Facebook accounts monitoring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in Pennsylvania. One of the anonymous account holders, John Doe, sued to block ICE from identifying him and other critics […]

I think people would be best served if they stopped thinking of online platforms as being useless for accomplishing political goals and instead understanding that just as is the case offline, online political actions encompass a wide range of efficacy, everything from the essentially useless to incredibly effective. It's just not the case that there's a dichotomy between effectiveness dictated by how "online" a person is. People who operate primarily online can mobilize massive political action and people who never touch a computer can engage in entirely ineffective political gestures that accomplish nothing. We have to judge political actions by their results, not their medium of operation.
And of course some types of actions are more suited to an online medium than others, but in the modern day, even offline actions are often coordinated online. And so instead of dismissing the internet as a platform for activism, we should instead be asking how we can more effectively utilize it. -

Engadget: GeoGuessr community maps go dark in protest of EWC ties to human rights abuses. “A group of GeoGuessr map creators have pulled their contributions from the game to protest its participation in the Esports World Cup 2025, calling the tournament “a sportswashing tool used by the government of Saudi Arabia to distract from and conceal its horrific human rights record.” The protestors […]

BBC: Zoë Bread’s TikTok leads to parking fine refunds. “A woman has won a long-running battle over a parking fine after sharing her ordeal to TikTok under her alter-ego Zoë Bread. Zoë Bread’s campaign started when she received a penalty for parking on Collier Street in Manchester and claimed confusing signs meant she bought a ticket from the wrong machine.”

Poynter: A new pope with a social media presence. “Pope Leo XIV is the 267th pope in the church’s history. But there is something different about him from most of the popes who came before him: a presence on social media. Though his posts were rare and mostly retweets or links to stories, then-Cardinal Robert Prevost is occasionally active on social media channels.”

Deutsche Welle: Kenya’s digital struggle: AI, activism and crackdowns . “A silent war is unfolding in Kenya, not on the streets but in the vast, uncharted world of the internet. Kenya’s digital landscape is at a breaking point, as the government clamps down on AI-generated content and social media activism, igniting what many have described as a ticking time bomb of online resistance.”

Considering the amount of far right content that keeps making its way into my YouTube recommendations, I now understand how so many people end up falling down the path of hate.
YouTube needs to do better and moderate its platform.
I’m especially sickened by the sheer amount of anti-trans content that enters my YouTube recommendations. Videos that outright suggest that people assault transgender individuals.
Yesterday, I saw a video from a literal Nazi. His content was promoted and had a large number of views. He engages in marches around cities, urging others to join him in his hate campaigns. This really shouldn’t be sent to my front page, or anyone’s, for that matter.
I created an alternate account on another device, on another network. This account had no links to my own and a fresh install of its OS. I received the same content nearly immediately. I found YouTube’s Shorts feature pushed it particularly hard.
I also noticed that YouTube’s “news” tab promoted Sky News above all other broadcasters.
News arguably shouldn’t be treated differently on the platform at all, but to promote a network with such bias and prejudice above all others is inexcusable.
Remember not to engage with this content. Move on as soon as you realise what it is. Don’t dislike it. Don’t comment condemning it. Move on.
The more you interact, the more is promoted.
YouTube, you must do better. This isn’t acceptable. Stop this hate bait and get it off the platform.

#Missouri trans ‘snitch form’ down after people spammed it with the ‘Bee Movie’ script | TechCrunch
The tip form added a CAPTCHA on Thursday, but that alone wasn’t enough to deter the trolls. The form was removed from the attorney general’s site by Friday morning.

Does online activism work?
In this video, Wisecrack takes on the question of "Does online activism work?" Online activism does lead to better awareness of issues, but doesn't always lead to action.
