H/T @duane Wilkins | Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand
“Research reports and historical records contain thousands of references to pā, kāinga, marae, awa, maunga, ara and other places. These names connect whenua with people, journeys, events and whakapapa, but they can be hard to find across hundreds of pages.
In this practical online wānanga, you’ll learn how to use AI locally on your desktop computer to search large PDFs while keeping the working files on your computer. We will find possible place names and the kōrero around them, keep each result connected to its original source, then view the reviewed results on a map.
We will finish by creating a simple place-to-place journey in Google Earth 3D. No AI, data or GIS experience is needed. If you can open a PDF and use a web browser, you can follow the demonstration…
• Ngā puna raraunga | DATA SOURCES USED IN THE DEMONSTRATION
- Waitangi Tribunal research reports and inquiry documents
- The New Zealand Gazetteer of official and recorded place names
- New Zealand Gazette notices and published Treaty settlement place-name records.
• He mea nui mō tātou | WHY THIS MATTERS
- Māori data is a taonga. Place names and place-based kōrero need care, appropriate access and protection
- A local-first approach can support rangatiratanga and greater mana whakahaere by keeping approved files and draft results under your control
- Keeping the whakapapa of the data visible makes every result easier for whānau, hapū, iwi, researchers and mana whenua to review
- The purpose is collective benefit, helping whanau reconnect information with identity, place, te reo and future aspirations.
• Ko wai mā tēnei | WHO THIS IS FOR
- Iwi, hapū, marae and Māori land trusts working with whenua, history, records or taonga information.
- Kaitiaki, whānau researchers, historians, planners, archivists and people preparing material for hui
- Anyone curious about using local AI to explore place-based kōrero and create a map
- Beginners are welcome. No AI, data, mapping or GIS experience is needed…”

“Whether you're a curious beginner or just want to sharpen your spatial smarts, this session is perfect for becoming a more informed citizen. Dive into the world of maps and learn tips and tricks to navigate and understand any map like a pro. Don't miss out on this fun, interactive online experience!
Maps are a form of language that needs to be learned to be understood.
Everyone says ‘oh, I have GPS in my car or on my phone…’ But GPS is really just a mathematical monkey trick to send your approximate location from satellites to display on a map of the world. Without the map, GPS has limited value.
Maps, as much as any form of media, contain a wealth of data, information, and knowledge about the world that we inhabit. But to decode that information, we need map intelligence.
Map intelligence is the ability of a map user to decode the information about the world that the map maker (cartographer) is trying to convey to us.
Why is this important? We encounter maps almost every day. From the ubiquitous daily weather map of our region, to maps we find in our history or current affairs books, maps that tell us where to vote and who we can vote for, maps presented by developers, or policy advocates to our elected officials, maps are important for our lives. Studies show that 50% of all local government employees use maps in some form for their work.
This free, 75-minute online workshop introduces the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to interpret the maps that you encounter in your life.’’
