Our analysis of Samsung beta programs (One UI 7.0, 8.0, and 8.5)

Samsung opens beta programs for select Galaxy devices every time they plan to release a new version of One UI. Those beta programs exist to gather user’s feedback and bug reports to help improve the software, and new beta builds will be released to fix issues and add more features prior to the official release.

We have analyzed Samsung’s beta programs that were run recently, and the results are in. To summarize, One UI 8.5 has the longest beta program duration, while One UI 8.0 is the shortest, with One UI 7.0 in the middle, according to the start and the end dates of the program for the first device, inclusive. Please note that we have only taken the first device that joined the beta program, not the overall beta program duration that spans multiple devices, as the ending date reflects the official rollout start date.

One UI 7.0

Anticipation started when One UI 7.0 got leaked to the public back in July 2024, and several appearances were made before the official beta program started. The Galaxy S24 was the first device to join the beta program on December 5th, 2024, and the stable version was released to the Galaxy S25 on January. Samsung opens beta programs for select Galaxy devices every time they plan to release a new version of One UI. Those beta programs exist to gather user’s feedback and bug reports to help improve the software, and new beta builds will be released to fix issues and add more features prior to the official release.

We have analyzed Samsung’s beta programs that were run recently, and the results are in. To summarize, One UI 8.5 has the longest beta program duration, while One UI 8.0 is the shortest, with One UI 7.0 in the middle, according to the start and the end dates of the program for the first device, inclusive. Please note that we have only taken the first device that joined the beta program, not the overall beta program duration that spans multiple devices, as the ending date reflects the official rollout start date.

One UI 7.0

Anticipation started when One UI 7.0 got leaked to the public back in July 2024, and several appearances were made before the official beta program started. The Galaxy S24 was the first device to join the beta program on December 5th, 2024, and the stable version was released to the Galaxy S25 on January. It was anticipated that February would be the release month, but that didn’t materialize until April 7th, 2024, when the beta program closed.

One UI 7.0 had a rough start when the release was made, because a serious bug caused Samsung to pull the update from the servers on April 12th. Then, five days later, One UI 7.0 was released again. We will still, however, use April 7th as the marker for the ending of the beta program, as well as the Korean region, for more accuracy.

The following beta builds were released for the Galaxy S24 series:

• Samsung Galaxy S24 / S24+ / S24 Ultra
  • One UI 7 Beta 1 (build ZXKZ): December 5th, 2024 (article, recruitment)
  • One UI 7 Beta 2 (build ZXL5): December 16th, 2024
  • One UI 7 Beta 3 (build ZXLJ): January 6th, 2025
  • One UI 7 Beta 4 (build ZYBA): February 19th, 2025
  • One UI 7 Beta 5 (build ZYC6): March 17th, 2025
  • One UI 7 Beta 6 (build ZYCE): March 26th, 2025

The stable release happened after the sixth beta, with the stable release that followed it:

• Samsung Galaxy S24
  • Build BYCG for KOO: April 7th, 2025 (taken down April 12th)
  • Build BYCG for EUX: April 10th, 2025 (taken down April 12th)
  • Build BYD9 for KOO: April 17th, 2025
  • Build BYD9 for EUX: April 23rd, 2025

Suppose that build ZXKZ was released on December 5th, 2024, for the beta program participants, and that BYD9 was released on April 17th, 2025, to the public, we have calculated the date difference between those two dates, with April 17th being included.

Therefore, our analysis shows that 4 months, 3 days was the duration of the program for the Galaxy S24. Other devices’ beta programs are shorter, but they are irrelevant for this article. One third of a year with 3 more days were spent on adding features and making improvements.

One UI 8.0

Shortly after One UI 7.0 concluded its beta program and got expanded to more devices, One UI 8.0’s beta program started on May 28th, 2025, with the Galaxy S25 as the first participant of the beta program. This also introduced a new way to enter the beta program, which simplified things a lot, compared to One UI 7.0 and earlier, because you just had to enter the beta program page and check to see if a beta program is available to you. The stable rollout started on September 15th, 2025.

The following beta builds were released for the Galaxy S25 series:

• Samsung Galaxy S25 / S25+ / S25 Ultra (S25 Edge excluded) [Beta shutdown September 15th, 2025]
  • One UI 8 Beta 1 (build ZYER): May 28th, 2025 (article, recruitment)
  • One UI 8 Beta 2 (build ZYF3): June 12th, 2025
  • One UI 8 Beta 3 (build ZYFA): June 30th, 2025

The stable release happened after 7 beta versions, and the dates are:

Suppose that build ZYER was released for the beta participants on May 28th, 2025, and that BYI3 was released on September 15th, 2025, for the Korean variant. We have calculated the difference between two dates, with the end date being included to make the length consistent.

Therefore, our analysis shows that 3 months, 19 days was the duration of the beta program for the Galaxy S25, which means a quarter of a year and two weeks with 5 more days of bug fixes and new features.

One UI 8.5

Here’s when we’ve come to the present, with One UI 8.5 being released on May 6th, 2026, after the beta program was closed. On December 8th, 2025, One UI 8.5 beta was finally released, with the Galaxy S25 as the first participant. It brought the new ambient design that revolutionizes the way you use your device.

After ten beta versions of bug fixes and feature additions, as well as the AirDrop support on Quick Share for you to be able to share photos and other files to iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices, the stable version of One UI 8.5 was released on May 6th, 2026 for the Korean variant, with the global rollout being expected this week, including Canada, USA, India, and Europe.

So, suppose that build ZYL8 was released on December 8th, 2025, for beta program participants, and build CZDP was released on May 6th, 2026 for Korean users. Therefore, we can conclude that the duration of the beta program was 4 months, 29 days, or a third of a year and four weeks with an extra day of bug fixes and feature additions.

Which beta program is the longest?

So, our analysis has covered One UI 7.0, 8.0, and this year’s 8.5, and the beta program durations for the first participating Galaxy flagship device are in! Let’s see which beta program is the longest in the ascending order.

• One UI 8.0: 3 months, 19 days
• One UI 7.0: 4 months, 3 days
• One UI 8.5: 4 months, 29 days

We can now finally say that One UI 8.0 is the shortest of the three beta programs in duration, and that One UI 8.5 beats One UI 7.0, which was believed to be Samsung’s longest beta program.

One UI 8.5 is now available on Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, Z Fold7, Z Flip7, Z TriFold, S25 FE, and Z Flip7 FE, starting from Korea, with the expansion coming in the next few days or weeks, depending on the device model and the sales region. Samsung has also announced the beginning of the One UI 8.5 rollout in their newsroom, with more devices to get the update. You can see the changelogs of One UI 8.5 here.

To get the full experience, the Galaxy S26 provides more features, such as the 24MP camera and various new Galaxy AI features, than the Galaxy S25’s version of One UI 8.5, provided that certain features, like the 24MP camera, are exclusive to the Galaxy S26.

One UI 8.5 Beta 10 is out [Galaxy S25]!

One UI 8.5 has made a significant appearance, with new features and other improvements. Samsung has first unveiled One UI 8.5 on December 8th, 2025, when it was available as a beta for the Galaxy S25 series users who are living in the following countries:

• Korea
• United States of America
• United Kingdom
• India
• Poland
• Germany

During the beta program, several beta versions were released and the Galaxy S26 with One UI 8.5 was unveiled. Since then, the beta program has been expanded and the first two middle-ranger devices, which are the Galaxy A57 and A37 phones, have been released with One UI 8.5 out of the box for people who are unable to afford the premium series.

This beta version of One UI 8.5 is going to be the end of the One UI 8.5 Beta chapter, and the stable rollout of One UI 8.5 for the Galaxy S25 in Korea is expected to begin at the end of this month, with May being the stable rollout month for the rest of the countries, including USA, India, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

We are very thrilled to announce that Samsung has released the tenth beta version of One UI 8.5 (build ZZDD) that has the following changes:

We’ll inform you if and when the stable release of One UI 8.5 starts. After that, Samsung should reveal the information about the eligible models for the update, with expected dates in the order of months, and we’ll reveal them for the Korean models.

To obtain the update, follow these steps:

1. Open the Settings app
2. Navigate to Software update
3. Tap on Download and Install
4. You should be able to see the update information.
5. Click on Install now, let it download and install, and click on Reboot. Make sure that you download the update through Wi-Fi.

This security update should take 5 to 10 minutes maximum to install once your phone reboots. Make sure that you have the phone charged fully before initiating the update process to avoid interruptions. Back up your data to your PC, the cloud, or any other device in case the update went wrong. Don’t interrupt the update process, or you’ll experience problems later.

QuickStar for One UI 8.5 is officially available!

One UI 8.5 Beta started on December 8th. Since then, Good Lock and its modules have started playing nice with One UI 8.5 by releasing the new versions to align with One UI 8.5’s internal structure, and the forum notice informing people of the updates has been posted on the official Korean Samsung Members forums.

We have updated our QuickStar module to this version on a One UI 8.0 device, and the “Change quick setting button grid” option is still available for us. It’s just that this option is hidden until the final stable One UI 8.5 release is out in the first half of 2026.

Samsung will release One UI 8 for the Galaxy Tab S8 soon!

Samsung has already pushed the Galaxy Tab S9 update this week that updates the tablet to One UI 8 based on Android 16 released this year. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Tab S8 is yet to receive the update, because the Brazilian timeline clearly said that from October 16th, the tablet was planned to receive the update.

One UI 8 will make it to the Galaxy Tab S8 series in the coming weeks, and the earliest possible date (best case) is the week of October 23rd, since the update wasn’t pushed in the week of October 16th. The new Samsung DeX offers more options when connecting to an external monitor or TV. You can choose an optimized display resolution up to WQHD, and you can also rotate the screen 90, 180, or 270 degrees.

Split screen made more convenient
When you open two apps in split screen mode, you can slide one app to the edge of the screen to focus on the current app. When you want to use another app, simply tap the app you’ve just pushed. The app will instantly switch between them, making it convenient to use.

Reminder

Redesigned Reminder
The Reminder app’s screen layout has been revamped. You can now easily see how many reminders you have in each category at the top of the screen. Custom categories can be easily collapsed and expanded, allowing you to customize the Reminder main screen to your liking.

Add useful reminder templates
We provide a variety of templates to help you make the most of your reminders. You won’t have to worry about how to set reminders for important tasks.

Add reminders easily
To add a reminder, simply type it in the input field at the bottom of the screen. Based on your input, templates and previously used reminders will be recommended. Using the buttons below the input field, you can easily create checklists, set locations, attach images, and more. You can also create a reminder by voice by pressing the microphone icon instead of typing.

Skip notifications on holidays
When adding a reminder, you can set it so that the event notification does not sound on weekends and public holidays.

Calendar

Manage reminders in your calendar
Now you can add reminders directly from the Calendar app without opening the Reminders app. Simply tap the + button on the calendar to easily add events or reminders. To change a reminder time, simply drag it to the desired date or time.

Add a schedule quickly
When creating a schedule using the Quick Add menu, you’ll receive recommendations for schedule names and times based on existing schedules. Selecting a recommendation will immediately add the schedule without any additional input.

View lunar dates together
You can set the lunar date to always be displayed on the monthly calendar. Go to Calendar Settings and set it to Always display lunar dates.

Skip notifications on holidays
When creating a schedule, you can set it so that schedule notifications do not sound on weekends and public holidays.

Capture the perfect brightness with the exposure monitor
Try the Exposure Monitor feature in Pro and Pro Video modes. It helps you capture photos and videos with the right amount of brightness. It displays overexposed areas with a zebra pattern, and provides false color, which displays different colors depending on the exposure value.

Professional-level editing experience with Log videos
You can shoot video in Log format and then professionally edit it. Simply turn on Log in the camera settings and shooting screen to instantly record in Log format. This feature is available in both Video and Pro Video modes.

Audio

Quickly set up your Galaxy Buds
You can now easily control your Galaxy Buds from your phone’s settings—no need to open the Galaxy Wearable app separately.

Oracast, Connecting Easier
Oracast lets you simultaneously transmit audio from one device to multiple devices. Simply scan a QR code to easily connect to the audio you’re playing, or you can generate your own QR code so others can connect to your audio.

Communication

Profile card improvements
The layout of the profile card editing screen has been improved to make it easier to create and edit profile cards. You can now share your created profile cards so that callers can see who you are.

Check call recordings in Contacts
You can easily review previous calls. If a call with the other party is recorded, it will appear on the contact’s history screen.

Security and Privacy

Upgraded Secure Folder
You can keep your important apps and data even more secure. When the Secure Folder is locked, all apps within it will be closed and notifications will be muted. For even greater security, you can completely hide the Secure Folder and encrypt all apps and data within it.

Enhanced device security
Knox Matrix periodically checks all devices logged into your Samsung account for security risks. If a security risk is detected on a device, it is automatically logged out of your Samsung account to prevent the risk from spreading to other devices. You can check the security status of your device in the Security & Privacy settings.

Set whether to display notifications when the screen is locked
On the main screen of the Notifications settings, you can choose to show or hide notifications when your phone is locked. Select Always show notifications to view them when your phone is locked, or Hide notifications when locked to prevent others from seeing them.

Accessibility

Added screen zoom option to the submenu
A new way to easily zoom in and out has been added to the submenu. You can zoom in and out by dragging with one finger, or adjust the zoom level by pressing the on-screen zoom level button.

Use mouse gestures with your keyboard
You can now use your keyboard to perform mouse actions. By enabling the Mouse Keys option in Accessibility settings, you can conveniently use your keyboard to perform mouse functions, such as moving the mouse pointer, clicking, long-pressing, and scrolling.

Enlarge the keyboard on the screen as well
The keyboard has been improved to enlarge when the screen is zoomed in, making it easier to type. Try enabling the Zoom Keyboard When Typing option in the Zoom settings.

Easily connect your Bluetooth hearing aids
You can register and connect your Bluetooth hearing aid directly from the Hearing Aid Support screen in Accessibility Settings.

Modes and Routines

Easily set up routines with new templates
New routine templates are available, utilizing weather and various detailed conditions. You can use the templates as is, or customize the settings to your liking.

Detailed configurable routines
By importing data from various apps, including Watch, Calendar, and Samsung Notes, you can now configure a wider range of actions in your routines. Imported data can be used as conditions or actions.

Other enhanced features

Improved alarm groups
Usability has been improved by allowing you to directly add existing alarms to a group by pressing the + button on the Alarm Groups screen. You can also add an Alarm Group widget to the home screen to turn multiple alarms on and off at once.

More convenient app notification settings
You can manage various notification options at once, such as how notifications are displayed and whether they are displayed on the lock screen, from the notification settings screen of each app.

Get quick support
You can receive more convenient support with a quick check-in at a Samsung Service Center. By using NFC or scanning a QR code, you can avoid manually entering information like your name and phone number. Your data is encrypted and only accessible by Samsung service representatives.

Intuitive weather expression
The Weather app has been improved to provide an intuitive view of the weather. Appropriate animations are applied to the app’s main background based on current weather conditions.

Change weather data provider
The Weather Channel has changed its weather information provider. Some registered location names may change.

To update to One UI 8.0, you’ll need to have an eligible device, such as the Galaxy S25, Z Fold/Flip 6, and Tab S10, before you can continue. Afterwards, go to Settings > Software update > Download and install.

Samsung shuts down the One UI 8 Beta program for Korea

We are excited to announce that starting from today, One UI 8 Beta users in Korea can now download the One UI 8 update to their Galaxy S25 smartphones as Samsung has finally released this version of One UI. Your Galaxy has now become more powerful as One UI 8 brings more powerful features.

The firmware information states:

• Galaxy S25: BYI3
• Galaxy S25+: BYI3
• Galaxy S25 Ultra: BYI3

To obtain the update, perform the following steps:

1. Open the Settings app
2. Navigate to Software Updates
3. Tap on Download and Install
4. Wait until you see One UI 8 at the top of the page, then tap on Download
5. Wait for the download to complete, then tap on Install

After you perform the above steps, your phone will be running One UI 8 based on Android 16, and you can enjoy its new features and with many improvements on place. This makes sure that your experience gets improved.

If you still didn’t get the update for your device, wait for a few days or a few weeks, then check for updates again. If you still see “Your software is up to date,” this means that the update didn’t reach your region yet.

Note that the update process may take 15 to 20 minutes, and this can vary from device to device. The download process may incur extra charges if you’re using the cellular network as the update size is around 5 GB, depending on the device, so we recommend downloading it through Wi-Fi. Never interrupt the update process in any way, or problems may occur. Make sure that your phone gets charged before you initiate the installation process.

One UI 8 has made a significant appearance, with new features and other improvements. We are very thrilled to announce that Samsung has recently opened the One UI 8 Beta Program for the Galaxy Z Fold/Flip 5 series in the following countries:

• Korea
• United States of America (soon)
• United Kingdom (soon)

This gives us a hint that the Beta Program is now open. Users should be able to try out One UI 8 in its earliest shape and form on their Galaxy Z Flip/Fold 5 devices, including the base model, the Plus model, and the Ultra model. You can identify the update with ZYH4.

To join the Beta Program, you must have the latest version of Samsung Members installed. You can get the latest version through either the Galaxy Store or the Play Store. Once done, you should be able to join the program if you have an eligible device.
