Scientists who have never been to #China have been surprised by the ‘sudden’ dominance of #Chinese universities in world rankings of #Science and #Engineering departments, as well as the tables of contents of journals with high #ImpactFactors.
In 1979, China instituted its #OneChildPolicy and subsequently invested heavily in #education.
Meanwhile, #Texas built high school football stadiums costing over $70 million and the Duggars were the model #American family! https://www.businessinsider.com/duggar-family-scandals-controversies-19-kids-and-counting-2021-5 🤷🏻♂️

The death of a former head of China’s one-child policy has been met not by tributes, but by castigation of the abandoned policy on social media this week. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/12/25/asia-pacific/society/china-one-child-social-media/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #asiapacific #society #china #population #onechildpolicy

"Lin and Sun studiously maintain the enigma around Shuo so that we are left guessing as to whether he’s just a disadvantaged teen trying to make his way in the world or a cuckoo in the nest." - we take a look at Brief History Of A Family https://www.eyeforfilm.co.uk/review/brief-history-of-a-family-2024-film-review-by-amber-wilkinson #berlinale #film #movies #Berlinale2024 #OneChildPolicy

Why is #EggFreezing banned in #China ?
eggs as in human eggs for #IVF
(no #sinophobic answers please)
Is that still current info? If it is a legacy of the #OneChildPolicy i would expect it might be changed now that they are encouraging three kids per family?
It was mentioned in passing on this #podcast from #TheEconomist https://open.spotify.com/episode/5AVoUA3cR6mt28OPG7VBE0?si=FwW18SGwSQq2JZYhQ7tIUw link from #spotify normally I'd find a direct link, but it's not very relevant to this post

Central planning for society often doesn't pan out the way you'd expect. Zero-Covid past the availability of vaccines is one example. In the coming decades, the effects of One-Child Policy are going to be tremendous.
My grandparents on one side emigrated from China in the 1930s. That was a lucky decision, it seems. For a Chinese person to have no siblings, cousins, nieces/nephews is unimaginable, but that's going to be the reality for many in the 21st century because of the CCP's policies of the 20th century.

In much of #China, prevailing local regulations and social mores make having a third #child—or any child at all if you’re unmarried or LGBT—nearly impossible. But for the 83 million people in the #Sichuan province, that’s about to change. https://time.com/6252262/china-sichuan-unmarried-people-children/ #OneChildPolicy

In 2015, the #ChineseGovernment did something it almost never does: It admitted it made a mistake. The ruling #CommunistParty announced that it was ending its historic and coercive #OneChildPolicy, allowing all married couples to have up to two children. https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23558772/china-population-overpopulation-one-child-policy-demographics-aging-beijing-xi-jinping

@todayilearned #OneChildPolicy
Wiki-
In the late 20th century and the early 21st century, the percentage share has been trending down. This was caused by two opposite factors: On one hand, the world population has been growing explosively. On the other hand, in order to address the poverty issue, China implemented a strict birth control policy. -
@seankearney
Quite right. Home to roost.Having said that, they seem to trade in equally bad #proxyWars. China have surplus men from #oneChildPolicy, and west seem willing to off #Trump/#Brexit-type voters, and #SouthAmerica has stuff.
Re #homeToRoost, we were talking to a young adult recently about #Israel genocide and #landGrab from #Palestinians. They said, beating chest, "I don't watch the news, I do my own thing," Something to that effect.
All we said was, these things come full circle.
