Rest of World has recently published that
Indian kirana stores are struggling to compete with quick-commerce (typically 10 minute delivery) apps like Zepto and Blinkit on discounts and delivery.
Here are my two cents with respect to Bengaluru, India.
Around 200,000 kirana stores have closed in the past year, mostly in big cities.
1. Most gated communities and large apartments complexes have their own mom-and-pop stores. Some even have eateries and barber shops. These stores and outlets have captive customers and are apparently doing okay.
2. The mom-and-pop stores that have closed used to be located almost near these apartment complexes and gated communities but not within a short walking distance.
3. Indian kirana stores (e.g. vegetable and fruit stalls, mini-restaurants and other outlets) in older localities with independent houses or smaller apartment complexes are still surviving and some are doing well.
4. Typically 10 minute delivery service providers like Blinkit, Zepto, Bigbasket Now, Swiggy Instamart etc. also stop operations in a locality almost without any notice. I am convinced thatthese quick-commerce businesses are burning cash to establish a monopoly in the market.
5. Due to very heavy traffic in Bengaluru during normal working hours, independently reaching these local stores is a challenge. Sometimes even parking a two wheeler can be a headache.
6. Some of the closed mom-and-pop stores could have survived by providing better customer interface and experience.
7. The article does not mention about the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) which is a government initiative aimed at empowering small retailers, particularly kirana stores, to compete with e-commerce giants.

* Kirana stores face challenges in adopting ONDC, including payment delays and lack of process discipline.
* ONDC offers advantages such as discoverability and competition with dark stores.

One Q that I was trying to answer post #IndiaFOSS2024 was: What is the entry barrier for an unincorporated entity to sign on to the ONDC Network. The juspay folks said it was quite low, but I'm looking at the compliance and the T&C requirements, and it is much higher.
You need a incorporated entity, and you need to pay ONDC both for onboarding, and on per-txn (in future)

Adani Group to enter UPI, digital payment, credit card business to compete Google and Reliance: Report
Adani Group plans to enter e-commerce and payments sectors in competition with Google and Reliance Industries in India. They are considering UPI license, co-branded credit card, and online shopping via ONDC. The services will be accessible through Adani One app targeting existing clientele.

Not sure if the fediverse is in on this, but the silver lining here is that online food delivery has suddenly become cheaper on the ONDC platforms. I tried Pincode app yesterday (which uses ONDC) and I was able to get a Dal Makhani for 210 Rs as opposed to 310 Rs on Swiggy. As soon as it came another Gobi Manchurian was ordered promptly for a total of 90 Rs.
Never understood what the hoopla about #ONDC is all about until today. Now it seems like a perfect play by the government.

@logic such nice pickings to pad the anti- #ONDC anti- #Beckn tirade, does logic count for nothing? You will be taken only as seriously as the article is.
If ONDC, compliant with Beckn, isn't an improvement over Amazon/Flipkart et al, then NPCI wouldn't have been an improvement over Visa/Mastercard et al. But it was! A big one. ONDC could be too, lets see.
And the criticism? The regulator should be involved in ONDC? Hilarious! You couldn't complain to CCI if they had a vested interest!
