  1. > ... The New York Times, for example, identified a best-seller by the philosopher Harry Frankfurt as On Bull****.
... On the whole, the acceptability of taboo words is only loosely tied to the acceptability of what they refer to, but, in the case of taboo terms for effluvia, the correlation is fairly good.

The comment about Pinker's "confident tone" focussed my attention on the appearance of #HarryFrankfurt's #OnBullshit in his essay on #TabooWords #CurseWords

  2. HT @ct_bergstrom & Jevin D West for introducing #HarryFrankfurt to me reading their #CallingBullshit book:

» Frankfurt ...described #bullshit as what people create when they try to impress or persuade you, without any concern for whether what they are saying is true or false, correct or incorrect

    ..

Frankfurt's distinction ..lies are designed to lead away from the truth; bullshit is produced with a gross indifference to the truth «

  7. ... think about the purpose the utopian hallucinations about AI are serving. What work are these benevolent stories doing in the culture as we encounter these strange new tools? Here is one hypothesis: they are the powerful and enticing cover stories for what may turn out to be the largest and most consequential theft in human history. Because what we are witnessing is the wealthiest companies in history ( #Microsoft, #Apple, #Google, #Meta, #Amazon …) unilaterally seizing the sum total of human knowledge that exists in digital, scrapable form and walling it off inside proprietary products, many of which will take direct aim at the humans whose lifetime of labor trained the machines without giving permission or consent.
    This should not be legal...

  10. Why so much Bullshit? Corporate Advertising?
    > The ads juxtapose imagery that actually makes no sense - ice cream billboards in North Korea, for example.. An ad's ability to confound its audience is the new credential for a brand's authenticity.
#DouglasRushkoff on #GruenTransfer, brands and #Advertising marks a trend since the 1890's? #ChatGPT might just be a sign of The Surrender of Culture to Advertising, technology just increases the amounts and speeds for #OnBullshit's #Bullshit

  11. > Words cannot guarantee their truth content. Rather, they assemble a context in which the question, Is this true or false? is relevant. In the 1890’s that context was shattered, first by the massive intrusion of illustrations and photographs, then by the nonpropositional use of language. For example, in the 1890’s advertisers adopted the technique of using slogans.. jingles started to be used..

  12. > .. ChatGPT is, in technical terms, a 'bullshit generator'. If a generated sentence makes sense to you, the reader, it means the mathematical model has made sufficiently good guess to pass your sense-making filter. The language model has no idea what it's talking about because it has no idea about anything at all. It's more of a bullshitter than the most egregious egoist you'll ever meet.. danmcquillan.org/chatgpt.html

  13. > OUTRIGHT FAKERY IS CLEARLY more common in.. sciences than we’d like to believe. But it may not be the biggest threat to their credibility... #MichaelKinsley once said of wrongdoing in Washington, so too in the lab: “The scandal is what’s legal.” The kind of manipulation that went into the “When I’m Sixty-Four” paper, for instance, is “nearly universally common,” #Simonsohn says. It is called “p-hacking,” or, more colorfully, “torturing the data until it confesses.”

  14. > There's something uncanny and compelling about these randomly generated nothing statements. They feel substantive at first.. "I wondered if people actually thought these were profound," #Pennycook tells me.. the average participant rated the gibberish as being between "somewhat profound" and "fairly profound." > Unlike pseudoprofound bullshit, political bullshit isn’t designed to sound profound so much as it’s deliberately crafted as accessible if vague rhetoric to be used in speeches or off-the-cuff press conference remarks in the service of evading a more nuanced discussion of complex topics.

  18. Maybe the On Bullshit guy tied his distinctions between bullshitters and liars to totalitarian techniques? Or advertising? or maybe pulled them together somehow? The rest of the Hannah Arendt's paragraph makes me think of the "whatever the market will bear" business guys as if MBA's a trained revere psychopathic acts to serve corporations. I'm painting myself into a corner where I have to find out more about #OnBullshit now. And to think the big-name philosophers used to write _On Liberty_...
