So frustrated with #OMNY, esp concerned for the privacy of fellow transit riders. Encourage fellow NYCers to contribute

Just created an API to pull #publictransit data from my #NYC #OMNY account. My total rides and card balances are updated hourly on my #homeassistant dashboard. #nycmta #mta #opensource #subway

Calling the OMNY customer service line, and for the first time in my life I heard the message "This call may be recorded for training purposes" followed with, "If you would not like to be recorded, press X."
What a concept!

At midnight on 1 January, the flexible credit card-sized pass used by millions of New Yorkers to get through subway turnstiles is being terminated from sale just as a new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, takes office.
The transit system will fully transition to #Omny, a contactless payment system that allows riders to tap their credit card, phone or other smart device to pay fares, much as they do for other purchases.

#omny: The extraordinary rise of electric cars in developing countries: From Nepal to Costa Rica, more people are buying electric cars than fossil-fuel vehicles, as battery prices plummet and cheap home-grown EVs come to market.

#FairFares finally made it to #OMNY.

lmao. So I specifically went to a station that's claimed to have #OMNY machines. This is what I saw. As of right now, it appears that you can't pay for the subway with cash.
Gee, it's sooo weird that fare evasion is rampant, isn't it? 🙄
Fucking clowns.. -
Fun fact: #NIST just put out new policy recommendations for password selection that explicitly says not to require special characters:

[edit: I did not use that password, or any variant of it, to be clear.]

@AndyHat Oh, good point; that makes the math even easier. 132/30 = $4.40 per day. $34.80/7 = $4.97 per day. That's quite a difference; OMNY costs over $17 (13%) more per month! That's an extra $200 per year.

One anecdote that may help the MTA understand why so few people are using OMNY: when I accidentally lost my OMNY card late last year, I had to search high and low to find a new one. The "where to get a card" info on the site was out of date; I went to at least 3 Duane Reades and CVSes and got told, "no, we don't carry those," and a small, local store that said they were sold out.
We can't use the cards if we *can't get them*.

Achievement unlocked,
Running over $250 through my #OMNY card in 4 weeks. Express buses are the culprit.

I prefer the OMNY card because when I lose it or it gets stolen or there is a problem I can get a new one and transfer funds online. But using the #WageWorks card - if something goes wrong and fare recouping fails - the card is blocked and I am stuck and need to do procedures to unblock it. -
Perfect, #Omny. No notes. #fail #YouHadOneJob

MTA OMNY tap-to-pay leaking much more trip history data to potential stalkers than previously known. All an attacker would need was victim’s credit card number and they could create a fake account and download the entire OMNY trip history. #privacy #OMNY #MTA #NYC

#404Media Tracked an #NYC #Subway Rider's Movements with an #MTA ‘Feature’
“Obviously this is a great fit for abusers,” - #domesticviolence & #cybersecurity expert
With their consent, they entered the rider’s #creditcard—data often easy to buy from criminal marketplaces, or which might be trivial for an abusive partner to obtain—and entered it in #OMNY, subway’s contactless payments system. Out came rider’s travel history for past 7 days, no other verification required.

What a nothingburger of a scare-story this is. First off, getting someone’s credit card number is not some easy task, you won’t just be able to casually track someone. Second, if you register your credit card on an OMNY account it doesn’t let you look up the ride history on the card without logging in to the account so it’s pretty easy to protect yourself #mta #omny https://www.404media.co/i-tracked-nyc-subway-rider-home-omny-mta/

The #OMNY context -- #transit agencies worldwide trying to move to contactless fare payment -- is fascinating. How do we ensure access for unbanked or privacy-conscious riders? Agencies save money because they need less fare-related infrastructure (e.g. kiosks) but lose the "float" of pre-paid fares that haven't been used yet. Deferred transaction reconciliation enables faster turnstile throughput, but risks nonpayment...

Cubic Transportation Systems, a vendor:

'The 15-cent fare hike was supposed to kick in Aug. 20 but arrived early, the MTA said, because of “prematurely implemented software changes” by Cubic Transportation Systems, the contractor that developed the #OMNY fare-payment system.'
