Audio recording of a lecture & writing class with students at Naropa University. Poet Allen Ginsberg is also in the audience. Burroughs covers topics including paranormal phenomena, magic, synchronicity, precognition, dreams, his cut-ups technique for writing, & he answers many questions from students & from Ginsberg in a Q & A. He reads from some of his fiction & non-fiction writings. The woman who asks many questions near the end & thanks him at the end I believe is Anne Waldman of Naropa University.

This audio recording complements the previous one.

In this recording Burroughs covers the cut-up method of writing in some detail, & reads from his own cut-up writings, as well as some by Burroughs’ sometime collaborator Brion Gysin. Burroughs describes how some cut-ups appear to be uncanny prognosticators, accurately predicting future events, according to Burroughs.

He also describes experiments with audio cut-ups using tape recorders. He had intended to play recordings of some of Gysin’s tape experiments at this lecture, but the tapes had not arrived on time. Instead, Burroughs describes some of the cut-up tape experiments.

And he covers other tape experiments that interest him conducted by paranormal investigators & what today is commonly known as EVP (electronic voice phenomena), where tape recorders are supposed to record unexplained mysterious human voices though no such sound input is available to the recorder. Burroughs refers to these as “Paranormal Voices” experiments/phenomena.

Burroughs also makes reference to dreams, the last words of Dutch Schultz, Shakespeare, computers, Homer, Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, T.S. Eliot, & Carl Jung.

I'm bamboozled by OMERO's APIs.

There seems to be an XML model, a Java (slice? blitz?) API that wraps the XML, a Python wrapper for that Java model (omero.model), an official high-level wrapper for that Python wrapper (omero.gateway), and a third party wrapper for that wrapper (ezomero). Then there's also a JSON API.

Today I shut down my #OMERO server.

I have been using it since ~2009 to store and manage all my #microscopy data from my PhD, my first postdoc, and my second postdoc. It holds ~115 GB of images, mostly of cultured human cells in mitosis and larval fly brains.

But it didn’t get any new data since March 2021, when upon finishing my second postdoc I left the bench behind to become a #biocurator. For the past three years, I kept maintaining it, upgrading the server to stay up-to-date with the latest versions.

But as it now quite clear to me that I will most likely not go back to being a wet lab scientist in the near or even not-so-near future (I love my #biocuration job too much), I couldn’t justify to myself the time spent in maintaining a server that I would most likely never use again.

So, I took a final dump of the database, a snapshot of the directory containing the raw images (all 115 GB of them), stored that away, and then shut down the server and removed any trace of it from my machine.

After three years, the last page of my former life as a wet lab scientist is finally turned.

we heard about the Galaxy #MassSpec community, Galaxy working on images deposited in #Omero and Galaxy as a genome annotation workhorse in large projects like #EBPgenome.
