  1. "I am a child shaped in beeswax. I am made like a doll the size of a human forearm."

-- #FirstSentences of The Wax Child by Olga Ravn (trans. Martin Aitken, 2023/2025, New Directions.)

    #ReadingNotes will go here.

Started this last night and this will probably be a super quick read, which is good -- but already loving the style and the ambiance.

I wanted something fun... if not light then at least odd or a bit weird, maybe creepy, brisk pace.

A tale of 17th-century witchcraft accusations told from the perspective of a wax doll many centuries later? Yes, I think that will do.

  5. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜’𝗺 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: "𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘅 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱" 𝗯𝘆 𝗢𝗹𝗴𝗮 𝗥𝗮𝘃𝗻 -

A spontaneous choice, feminist history and hybrid fiction and something more, still. Everyone who has read it has been "captured" by her writing. Let's see . . .

  9. #NowReading #novel

"There was a night when I was still lying in the bed of my mistress. Yes, I remember it. She wakes with a start, sits up, looks out. Others in the surrounding houses of the town, wake in the same manner. They don't know why. They are possessed by such a strange feeling. I observe them. I hear their thoughts. There's something not right, something awry. The salty air - as if the sea has flooded into their rooms. They don't know it yet, but still they sense it. The Earth turns slowly into modernity. And in the space of an imperceptible moment, the old world has succumbed conclusively to the new."

Freu! Kommt auch im #PhantFeuille gut an.

  14. It’s London run came to an end yesterday. But if you get a chance to see Łukasz Twarkowski’s The Employees at some point, take it.

It’s different from the experimental sci-fi novel by Olga Ravn it’s inspired by. More of a stunning work of art in its own right, combining immersive theatre, video art, sci-fi literature, film and dance.

Christmas books so far: loved Act of Oblivion by Robert Harris, though it's a heavy-duty story full of sadness; fairly meh about The Employees by Olga Ravn - couldn't really feel any warmth for the human and cyber characters; loving Booth by Karen Joy Fowler so far, with its 19th-century politicohippie family @bookstodon #Booth #KarenJoyFowler #TheEmployees #OlgaRavn #ActOfOblivion #RobertHarris
