  6. Stumbled across this 1965 review of the new #Renault 16.
In which we learn about 18 seconds to 100kmh is perfectly acceptable performance for a family car, you can get a lot of suitcases in an R16, it's a bit #French, and reviewers back then were very committed. So much so that I am not sure I would have wanted to have bought that particular R16!

  7. Here's a Pathe News story about a quick respray service where for 21 Guineas you could have your 60's car painted any colour your in a day!
Safe to say I have concerns about the long-term prospects for your shiny new paint job!
This film is very of its era, I believe the tone would be very different if this was made today!

  8. Saw this parked up in the street this morning. Until I saw the #Holden badge I thought it was an odd Vauxhall, which I suppose it might well share some DNA with. The UK plate on this is early 60s, would this be closely related to an early Viva?

  9. Amazing the things people do for love and remembrance, it seems this old dealer showroom and cars were preserved as a sort memorial to the last owner by his widow.

  12. For today's #WeirdCarMastodon #NameThatCar challenge we have something a little bit older than the TVR which was last vehicle. It's big, it's black but can you name it from this unusual view of the wing?
This one is definitely a Classic Car!

  13. So #WeirdCarMastodon folks after an unscheduled break, for which I can only apologise, it's the return of the #NameThatCar challenge.

Today's images are I think very distinctive, I suspect one would need to know their American cars, to be able to get it.

  14. The answer to the outstanding #NameThatCar challenge is a car that I like the look of, but have never really desired, despite owning its siblings! I would like to drive one sometime! The image with its odd vents made a few folks to think "rear-engined" whereas it is in fact Triumph's pocket homage to the E-Type, the #Triumph #GT6 MKIII. The vents are either cabin air or just decoration!
Well done if you got it right!

  16. For our next #WeirdCarMastodon #NameThatCar challenge we have a cat that was once a mainstream staple.
While earlier generations of this car could be found all over the world this version less so. Still it's a strong design and might yet be a classic!

  17. Turning to our outstanding #NameThatCar challenge. This one attracted a couple of left field responses, sadly I must disappoint and say it is not a Maxi 😲 , or even an American version of one!
The car is a many of you figured out a Dodge Charger, I am not sure what the British version would be, perhaps a Vauxhall Magnum?

  19. The answer to the outstanding #NameThatCar challenge is a car that would have been an object of desire in my youth, affordable performance compared to a hot hatch.
It is a #Ford #Escort MK1 #Mexico which I spotted for sale at a petrol station for £32k, isn't even an original Mexico.
Kudos to @philturpin who explained the difference between a Mexico and an RS, stripe positioning! Thanks for the guesses, well done if you got it right.

  20. For the next #WeirdCarMastodon #NameThatCar challenge we here is something to reflect on... See what I did there!
Can you name it from this image? I should say I don't belive these were sold in North America but versions of it were offered in a number of established global markets and famously this car did get to other parts of the Americas.

  21. The answer to the outstanding #NameThatCar challenge was as many spotted a #Rover P5B Coupe. It's not the most obvious Coupe. As these are indistinguishable from the saloon from the front corner I will take Rover P5. This is a car associated with Margaret Thatcher, while out of production by the time she became PM HMG having purchased the end of production vehicles, kept them in use by Minsters into the 80s.

  27. The answer the outstanding #NameThatCar challenge was this attractive Jaguar XJS Convertible from sunny California. Thanks to @Holberg for the picture.
Following the E-Type was always going to be tough and XJ-S didn't get the warmest of welcome. However it stuck around and was well liked if out dated by the time it was eventually retired.

As many of you #WeirdCarMastodon folks correctly identified it was a Buick Special. Those portholes in the wing were very distinctive!
The only question was whuch model.
Helpfully the owner had provided an informative label.
Buick Special Model 48 264 cui Fireball V8.

  39. So the answer to the outstanding #NameThatCar challenge was relatively tricky with the crop of the image misleading some folks.
However those who did their detective work would have realised it was a Jaguar MKII as favoured by Inspector Morse on the telly.

  41. That the answer to yesterdays #NameThatCar challenge was, as a good number of you clever #WeirdCarMastodon folks worked out a late 60's Sunbeam Apline. The film connection is that an earlier Sunbeam Alpine was the first film "Bond Car" appearing in Dr No. More here: hotcars.com/the-real-story-beh. I believe the E-Type was never an official Bond Car.
Well done if you worked it out.

  42. Right #WeirdCarMastodon, back to #NameThatCar challenge business, and it's another classic convertible. Broadly a contemporary of the E-Type this one has at least one cinematic claim to fame that the E-Type does not!

  43. There was some excitement around #WeirdCarMastodon last week about a #2CV with a wooden body.
Here from my weekend out is a car, that is no longer a 2CV, but is largely made of #wood! Its 2CV origins can be seen in the lights and fenders. All the mechanical parts are from a 602 CV that succumbed to chassis rot. Everything else was made by the owner! It is an incredible piece of work!

  44. The Answer to yesterday's #NameThatCar challenge... where I did my best to disguise a beautiful and truly iconic car, by sharing a photo of a bit no one normally notices! The car in question was a 1970's Jaguar E-Type convertible.
