  2. Musical Interlude: I adore fiddler Bruce Molsky, who does difficult tunes with amazing ease. For a while, he had a band called Molsky's Mountain Drifters, who I was lucky enough to see live multiple times. Here's an uplifting tune for the difficult times we're having.

"There's a Bright Side Somewhere," performed by Molsky's Mountain Drifters.

  12. Musical Interlude: At the Old Time Festival, I saw the Golden Shoals (again). I saw them first when they were called the Hoot and Hollers...not sure why they changed their name, but oh well. I'm not a huge fan of their recordings, which are hit and miss for me, but live they're fun. This song came from a visit the singer made to an elderly musician who invited her to stay for a few days, and they lazed about the house in the mountains, puttering and making music. It's a great "vibe" song for a lazy weekend.

  20. Musical Interlude: Listening to Willi Carlisle while on my road trip this weekend, I was struck by this tune, which is almost gospel in sound if not content. It's a grand declaration of individuality and personal freedom.

  22. Musical Interlude: At one of the Old Time Musical festivals, I first heard Dom Flemons, formerly of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. A great performer and historian, and an electric stage presence, he deserves to be more widely known.

  26. Musical Interlude: Vermonters Dana and Susan Robinson came through my area a few years ago, and I caught them at a house concert. They just did an album of Vermont-inspired songs, including this paean to a small-town country store that was for sale...

  27. Musical Interlude: When the Old Time Festival was first announced, I was happy to see that Jake Blount's name was on the list, as I'm quite a fan of his. Then I was sad to see his name gone from the lineup...oh well, guess he had to cancel...

Then when I get there, they introduce a brand new group, New Dangerfield....featuring Jake Blount! Woohoo! Now it all made sense. New Dangerfield is an all-black string band, looking to uncover the history of black string band and black artists in old time music.

"Put No Walls Around Your Garden," performed by New Dangerfield.

  28. Musical Interlude: Evie Ladin, who I saw last weekend, was very memorable. She's a singer, banjoist, percussive dancer, and square dance caller...quite a combination! Here she is, playing and singing...

  29. Musical Interlude: This past weekend I saw Tall Poppy perform. I'm already familiar with NZ-born fiddler George Jackson, but now he has a new band that totally slaps.

  30. Musical Interlude: Another act I saw over the weekend was this fun duo, the Canote Brothers. These identical twins from Seattle are in their 70s and do a LOT of work with kids; they even a special family concert on Saturday morning. They're charming and sweet; their jokes are sometimes corny and obvious, but they tell them so perfectly they're still funny. I took to them immediately.

  31. Musical Interlude: One of the artists I saw this past weekend at the Old Time Music Festival was Jamie Fox (one x), an Indigenous fiddler from Montana, who taught us all a bit about the Old Time Music tradition in Indigenous communities...I mean, they absorbed a lot from us musically as well. She identifies as Métis, meaning a mixture of European and Indigenous cultures and ancestry, although here in the US she's identified as a certain tribe by the government.

Anyway, here's a nice video where she introduces herself and performs a few pieces. Listen and learn.

  32. Musical Interlude: I happened on this band by chance, liked their name, and investigated their music. I've been delighted with everything I hear from them, and hope they'll swing by my neck of the woods sometimes.

"Fourth Decade," performed by the Faux Paws.
