I like Open Location Coordinates AKA #olc #plusCodes as these are a compact, readable easily sharable open way to identify global coordinates.

There's 2 renderings though, a full one and a version that's abbreviated but needs a locality name.

The long one is great, the other one is useless because an app would need a massive db of placenames.

The numerous geocoding systems vary in #granularity (#precision) achieved with a certain amount of letters, & in their audience or #community.

Above, I gave the example of #Maidenhead Locators (#QTH) commonly used by #HamRadio people.

Different cultures use different #geocode|s for reasons.

AFAIC, it would allianate communities to single out a particular system & mark it as ›general‹ by using a prefix like ›#GEO‹.

Platforms should #welcome & represent a variety of cultures.

Relax, no one is seeking to re-invent any wheel.

This thread is more about usability than it is about implementation.

No one can make use of #semantic properties in a vocabulary as long as they do not show up in frontends.

After some testing, it would be worth to consider #geocoding of postings as a #FeatureRequest to #Fediverse developers, preferably not as #hashtag but as a separate property of postings, like #ContentWarning:

CW is implemented using the #abstract property of #ActivityPub.

To create a CW when boosting a #Friendica posting on #Mastodon, the author uses [abstract] markup in the Friendica posting.

Similar may be possible for #geocode|s.

The news writes about #OvertureMaps as a Google Maps competitor, but it also will make a free and open source Google invention more useful: Short #OLC / #PlusCodes can probably use the new datasets to fully put the black box myth to rest. (Reverse geocoding without relying on Google. Nominatim already enables this but is big and sluggish)

Had a great time at #OLCAccelerate this week and am equally happy and exhausted. Getting to see old friends again was the social battery recharge I needed, and the discussions on #onlinelearning and #highered #research were thoroughly energizing. Thanks again to @josieahlquist for the nostalgic keynote! Will be looking forward to seeing more #OLC community end up tooting instead of tweeting.

Wish I could come up with a better name for my #homeGrown #gameEngine. It's inspired by a project called the #OLC (#OneLoneCoder) #PixelGameEngine, but written in #Rust instead of #C++ and using #SDL instead of #OpenGL. There's no shared code, just a shared philosophy. Obviously I can't use that name, so I've given it a temporary name of Simple Game Engine, but I'm sure I can come up with something better than that.
