My personal #books #ReadingGoal this year is to find & read every book that Richard Wagamese wrote. I have read 3 of his books so far & loved them. He's one of my fave #Indigenous authors in #Canada.
Richard Wagamese was one of Canada’s foremost #IndigenousAuthors & esteemed public speaker & #storyteller. A professional writer since 1979, he was a newspaper columnist & reporter, radio & television broadcaster & producer, documentary producer & author of 14 titles from various #Canadian publishers.
He was a success in every genre of writing he tried. An #Ojibway from the #Wabaseemoong #FirstNation in Northwestern #Ontario, he became the first #NativeCanadian to win a National Newspaper Award for Column Writing in 1991. He won the Alberta Writers Guild Best Novel Award for his debut novel, Keeper’n Me in 1994 & the Canadian Authors Association Award for Fiction for his third novel Dream Wheels, in 2007. One Native Life was one of The Globe & Mail’s 100 Best Books of 2008 & One Story, One Song was awarded the George Ryga Award for Social Awareness in Literature in 2011.
Indian Horse, the feature film, is based on his book of the same title.

EAGLE LAKE – "#EagleLake #FirstNation is challenging the #NuclearWasteManagementOrganization’s site selection in court, and that’s more than welcome news to Neecha Dupuis.
"'I love it,' Dupuis, a member of the #Ojibway Nation of #Saugeen (#SavantLake), said from Ottawa. 'Just pure love.'
"Eagle Lake’s chief 'came and walked with us' in this year’s #WalkAgainstNuclearWaste, she noted.
"'It’s all coming together, like one giant dream catcher,' Dupuis said.
"Dupuis said she doesn’t understand #WabigoonLakeOjibway Nation’s decision to move forward with the NWMO on possibly constructing a deep geological repository, or DGR, for high-level nuclear waste.
"'For them to choose nuclear waste over the land, that doesn’t make sense. It doesn’t make sense at all.'"

"The demonstration followed a letter signed by nine chiefs last week, asking the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to respect their will not to bury Canada’s most #radioactive nuclear waste in a #DeepRepository site between the town of #Ignace and #WabigoonLake #Ojibway First Nation.
"The #NWMO is expected to issue a final decision by year’s end as to whether it will transport used #NuclearFuel, produced since the 1960s, by either train or highway over 1,600 kilometres to a deep geological repository. If the Ignace is chosen over Bruce County, where nuclear energy and its waste is produced, transportation would begin in the 2040s and will take 40 years to complete.

#Ignace council votes in favour of potential #NuclearWaste repository
Ignace is one of two potential locations being considered by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization

"The Township of Ignace noted in its release that #WabigoonLake #OjibwayNation (#WLON) will hold its own willingness process, and Ignace respects that WLON's support will also be required if the repository is to be built in the area.
"Whichever municipality ends up being chosen, the site won't be operational for some time; construction is expected to start in 2033, and the site would be up and running by the early 2040s.
"The proposed northwestern #Ontario #nuclear waste repository has received pushback from regional organizations and #Indigenous communities.
"In a media release issued Wednesday afternoon, We the #NuclearFreeNorth said the decision should be a regional one.
"'The #NWMO has deemed Ignace to be the 'host community,' despite Ignace's distance from the site, lack of jurisdiction, and the presence of other communities closer to the site and #downstream,' the media release stated."
