Over the past two months, the Ukrainian army has launched dozens of strikes against Russian oil infrastructure. According to Novaya Gazeta Europe calculations, drones have disabled refineries or installations that refine about 62 million tons of oil and produce about 6.5 million tons of gasoline in annual terms - almost a sixth of the country's output. Thank you for providing less simplistic information on this vexed situation; it’s never as simple as stated without sources or direct experience to draw on. We can learn lessons but US corruption is not one of them. Working better with our neighbours, like Singapore, who can do the volume refining is worthwhile it seems to me. 🙏🏻 -

A spokesperson for the World Health Organization, Christian Lindmeier, stated on 17 March that the destruction of #Iran's oil infrastructure released hazardous #hydrocarbons, #SulfurOxides, and #NitrogenCompounds into the atmosphere.
When rain combines with these #pollutants, it can lead to #ChemicalBurns and #LungInjury. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation and noted that authorities in Iran have urged residents to remain indoors.
"#BlackRain refers broadly to rainfall contaminated with atmospheric pollutants, explains Farzana Kastury, an environmental scientist at Adelaide University in Australia. Such rain often results from bushfire smoke or the burning of heavy fuels, which are by-products of crude #OilRefining.
In Iran's case, the black rain likely contains pollutants generated from the combustion of these fuels during fires triggered by missile attacks, including substances such as #acetone, #toluene, and #carcinogenic compounds like #benzene and #methylenechloride ."

Operating at very low throughput or shutting down abruptly under feedstock starvation creates serious risks: thermal stress and coking in distillation units, catalyst deactivation in hydrocrackers and hydrotreaters, corrosion and erosion from uneven operations, and mechanical failure in pumps, valves, and vacuum systems. Restarting complex units like fluid catalytic crackers, central to maximizing jet fuel yields, requires days to weeks of careful commissioning and costs millions. Prolonged idling can result in permanent derating of capacity, not merely temporary offline status.
“Unfortunately the law of physics steps in. Pumps and pipes are sized for a minimum hydraulic flow. And we are talking about hundreds of pumps and thousands of pipelines in a single refinery. However, federal records from the Environmental Protection Agency [#EPA] show that from the 1930s to the early 1970s, government agencies allowed companies to dump various types of waste at 14 underwater sites off the coast of Southern California. For those four decades, manufacturers got rid of their #refinery waste, filter cakes and oil #drilling waste, chemical waste, garbage, #military explosives and #RadioactiveWaste at these dump sites."

"Scientists were not able to identify the specific alkaline waste substances contained within the barrels. However, they point out that several industrial processes were known to produce alkaline waste, including #DDT manufacturing and oil refining, so the barrels might be linked to those.
"They also can’t estimate the full extent of the potential alkaline waste contamination. Roughly a third of the barrels identified so far have halos, but they don’t know if that ratio applies to all the barrels on the seafloor. Scientists also don’t know the exact number of barrels, though a previous estimate suggests there are more than 25,000.
" 'We don’t know how big the problem really is,' Gutleben tells the San Diego Union-Tribune.
"One thing seems certain: Given that the barrels were dumped more than 50 years ago and that they’re still having a major impact on the surrounding environment, the chemicals are likely here to stay. They represent a new type of “persistent pollutant” that takes a long time to break down, the researchers write in the paper.
" 'It could take several thousand years for the effects of caustic alkaline waste dumping in the San Pedro Basin to be resolved,' they add."
