  7. #Texas #oilfields become hot spot for #datacenter builders
To say #AI is the new #oil isn't just a metaphor. In this case, companies plan to power the facility using onsite #generators fueled by #naturalgas pulled straight from the source.
They argue that, by building the facility in close proximity to these resources, they can cut costs and speed up development.

they're parking the f*ing #AIfarms directly on top of #oilfields; like some diabolical comic-book #climatevillains, imho

  9. Groundbreaking for #TransWestExpress #transmission line in #Wyoming

"Some people are saying ‘Yes,’ like Rawlins mayor Terry Weickum.

He said the town has been in a “bust” recently as thousands of jobs were lost from the local #coalmines closing and the #oilfields slowing.

“It is a lucky break for us to get this incredible thing in our mix,” he said. “Some people don't like it. Some people don't like ice cream. I don't know what to tell you.”"

    Impact of #Methane on #GlobalWarming

    (1/n)

#ISS contributes to solutions for #ClimateChange

It is not just from underwater #OilFields (1) that the #GreenhouseGas #methane is leaking en masse. It is also emitted by #volcanoes (2).

Leaks from continental #FossilFuel #fields are enormous, too:

    "‘Mind-boggling’ methane #emissions from #Turkmenistan revealed
    ..#leaks of potent greenhouse gas."

In Push to Find Methane Leaks, Satellites Gear Up for the Hunt

Stemming the methane leaks from #landfills, #oil fields, natural gas #pipelines and more is one of the most powerful levers we have to quickly slow global warming. New satellites are bolstering this urgent mission by pinpointing emitters of this potent greenhouse gas from space.

    By Cheryl Katz • June 15, 2021

"Methane-hunting satellites have made a number of concerning discoveries. Among them: Despite the pandemic, methane emissions from oil and gas operations in #Russia rose 32 percent in 2020. Satellites also observed sizeable releases from gas pipelines in #Turkmenistan, a landfill in #Bangladesh, a natural gas field in #Canada, and coal mines in the U.S. #Appalachian Basin.

"The methane concentration in Earth’s atmosphere has been surging over the past half-decade, the NOAA Annual Greenhouse Gas Index shows. And despite the pandemic, 2020 saw the biggest one-year jump on record. The causes of the recent spike are unclear, but could include natural gas fracking, increased output from methane-producing microbes spurred by rising temperatures, or a combination of human-caused and natural forces."
