Cuba's National Zoo reported the birth of four Bengal tiger cubs—a species facing extinction—including an extremely rare white tiger.
The zoo director reported that the animal population has remained stable thanks to the staff's efforts and new partnerships with small private companies.
The zoo faces severe constraints due to the oil embargo imposed by the U.S., which has created unprecedented challenges for the lion and tiger enclosures. According to staff, feeding the wide variety of species—including buffalo, zebras, rhinos, and hippos—requires 20 liters of diesel per day.
To make up for the energy shortage across the park’s 375 hectares, workers use horse-drawn carts and electric tricycles to transport supplies across the vast grounds.
