Your art history post for today: by Jean-François Millet (1814–1875), Haystacks: Autumn, 1874, oil on canvas, 33 1/2 x 43 3/8 inches (85.1 x 110.2 cm), The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. #arthistory #painting #oilpainting
From the museum: “In Autumn, with the harvest finished, the gleaners have departed and the sheep are left to graze. Beyond the haystacks lie the plain of Chailly and the rooftops of Barbizon. The loose, sketchlike finish of this work is characteristic of Millet's late style: patches of the dark lilac-pink ground color are deliberately exposed, and the underdrawing is visible, particularly in the outlines of the haystacks and the sheep.”

Today at the NYMA here in #nijmegen , we’re trying to start a monthly head hunt since the dekaai festival in the summer is over and there is a lot of artists that want to keep doing portraits. I think it went well, collectively we didn’t make a mess. The model is the same I painted a few weeks ago, this time I am more satisfied with the outcome.

Hi, I’m an artist and currently live in Berlin.
I enjoy spending time in nature, visiting historic sites and museums or forgotten places, and I love anything to do with crafts. Especially when done with hands and using natural materials. We could all benefit if life moved a little slower.

An attempt at alla prima painting. This was as far as I got before everything was too wet and colors were getting muddy. I think in the future, I want to start with a toned board and use a more limited palette.

What I find particularly eye-catching in the work of artist Ann Toebbe is the way she combines different mediums that include gouache, oil paint, colored pencil, and paper collage with different textures to create her richly detailed work.

By Egon Schiele (1890-1918), Four Trees, 1917, oil on canvas, Belvedere Museum, Vienna. #art #arthistory #painting #oilpainting
A quote from the artist: “I mainly observe the physical movement of mountains, water, trees, and flowers now. Everywhere one is reminded of similar motions inside the human body, similar stirrings of pleasure and pain in plants. Painting alone is not enough for me; I know that one can use colors to establish qualities. When one sees an autumnal tree in summer, it is an intense experience that involves one’s whole heart and being; and I should like to paint that melancholy.”

Opposite from our season (well...unless you're in the southern hemisphere), but it's the sort of scene that fires the imagination and soothes the soul...the thought of "Spring Scattering Stars" from her perch atop the lunar crescent. 🥰

Visiting family in germany , I get little time to paint. And when home, all I do is draw, because I still think rhat I need to learn how to. That is why there weren’t decent updates, didn’t want to show half arsed attempts at sketching. Now you get an attempt at plein air painting :) happy days.
