So of course the NZ Privacy Commissioner will be pushing for third-party service providers to be subject to the OIA for every aspect of public service work they handle, just like the agencies commissioning them, right? Riiiight?

To create a cost to keeping it secret, so risk averse decision-makers were nudged towards openness. The fact that the MBA pod people who run the C Suites of public agencies these days haven't taken the hint isn't a failing of the OIA or the transparency safety-valve it provides.

Here's something different. An OIA request takes on a life of its own and transforms into a soap opera.
The original, slightly crazed request was sent to Poto Williams in March 2022. It was referred to Police who responded the following month, refusing all requests on privacy grounds.
What follows is an online scrap between related parties with accusations flying in all directions. I'm not sure I even want to know most of the back-story, but the Crewe murders are in there along with Arthur Allan Thomas.
The saga ends with the original poster saying "I retract this OIA request, there have been false allegations made..."
Er... but you were the one who was making them.

The licensing system will be run by the Real Estate Agents Authority, which is a crown entity and subject to the #OIA. So we can monitor whether its doing its job properly, and ask things like "which property manager has the most complaints?"
