It's cold now at night in #Canberra. The fourth frame contains a mid-winter #moth in the family #Oecophoridae

I'm intrigued by the crazily elongate #beetle in frame 1 - no idea what that is.

Frame 2 includes at least three of the tiny #moth Dialectica scalariella (#Gracillariidae, two of them near top-left corner)

I updated #CatalogueOfLife following a new paper from last Friday on the genus #Promalactis (small nicely marked #moths in #Oecophoridae):

COL only had 78 listed species for the genus. The new paper referenced many other publications with new species in Promalactis, mostly from Asia. The count is now 447 species, with 372 first described in the years since 2000.

This will enhance #DataManagement in @gbif and other online platforms.

What am I missing here? I can't find anything close to this #moth from #GluepotReserve last week.

The gestalt indicates #Gelechioidea and the labial palpi are recurved but not savagely so (unlike most #Australian #Oecophoridae or #Depressariidae which were my first guesses). The black legs suggest #Xyloryctidae and it's reminiscent of some NZ Gymnobathra apart from the palpi.

There are also hints of #Erebidae, but surely not ...

The family breakdown is much less complete. Many records are still identified only to order. Identifications are from barcode matches with identified specimens or work by expert curators.

5 of the 9 most represented families are difficult/inconspicuous #fly groups: Sciaridae, Cecidomyiidae, Chironomidae, Muscidae & Phoridae.

#Springtails are surprisingly common in Malaise traps

#Oecophoridae are massively diverse here.

Most of these are groups I would never manage to record otherwise.
