What are your thoughts on it?
What are you doing with it and how long have you been using #GNULinux?It seems I've put off getting the #GPD Pocket 4 #laptop long enough that #USB4 has been superceeded by not just #Oculink but #MCIO. Not to mention that #AMD released the 400 Series of CPUs that are slightly better.
What I'd really like is the #Framework version of it. i.e. slightly thicker with more i/o and upgradability/#repairability. Plus better cooling. I think it'd be a good 2-in-1 tablet for on the go #graphicdesign, #webdesign, #musicProduction, #writing, and the occasional #gaming with or without an eGPU.

So this is Burrs' TV gaming setup now. Was a fun Project - GPD Win 4 2024, Ryzen 7 8840U, 32GB RAM, 4TB NVMe. RX 9070 XT over OCuLink on a Minisforum DEG1 dock. Bazzite.
Getting it here meant writing systemd services to kill PCIe power management before it killed the oculink connection, udev rules to keep OpenRGB from raving on every wake cycle, and a lot of dmesg. Junction temps sit at 60C under load.
For reference, a PS5 Pro runs a Zen 2 CPU from 2020, 16GB RAM, and 2TB of storage. This is a current-gen Zen 4, 32GB RAM, 16GB VRAM, 4TB, an RDNA 4 GPU with roughly 3x the graphics muscle of the PS5 Pro, and the full Switch library. Undocked it's a handheld. Docked it's this science-projecty, but pretty cool little thing.

It seems like GNOME Shell on Wayland doesn't like it if a GPU gets removed during runtime. At least on Bazzite, it threw me back into Gaming Mode and I had to switch to the desktop again, losing all my open windows.
Well, I expected worse, so I had saved my work before. 😄
But that does set some limits on what I can do using some scripts I found on GitHub. In case a Mutter or GNOME dev reads this here: Are there any plans to gracefully switch between GPUs during runtime?

В последнее появилось много компактных NAS с основным хранилищем на SSD носителях и с десяти гигабитным Ethernet. Высокая скорость работы твердотельных дисков в связке с высокой скоростью обмена по сети, прекрасно раскрывают возможности новой техники, а самое главное оправдывают ожидания их владельцев от новых технологий. Насколько сложно самостоятельно собрать подобный NAS, используя доступные комплектующие и готовые компьютерные платформы? Как оказалось всё не так сложно, если найти подходящую платформу и немного её прокачать. Вот о такой доработке и пойдет речь.

PELADN Link S-2 is an OCuLink graphics dock for under $100
Last year mini PC maker PELADN launched an external graphics dock called the PELADN Link S1 that allowed you to add a desktop graphics card to any PC with a Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, or compatible USB4 port. Now the company has launched a new model with an OCuLink connector for higher-speed connections to a PC.
The new PELADN Link S-2 is available now from the SZBox store at AliExpress for $87.
The dock measures 253 x 162 x 41mm (10″ x 6.4″ x 1.6″) and has an open-air design: it’s not a case that houses a graphics card, it’s more of a base that holds a GPU in place and provides everything you need to connect it to a PC… assuming you’ve got a PC with an OCuLink port.
The SZBOX/PELADN Link S-2 has a PCIe x16 interface, a 24-pin ATX connector for power supply, and the dock comes with an OCuLink connector and graphics card bracket. And that’s about it.
Unlike some other external GPU solutions, this is not a USB hub, external storage device, or wireless amplifier. This is a device that’s meant for one thing and one thing only: adding a discrete GPU to a computer that might not otherwise have one, while using a high-speed OCuLink connector.
OCuLink is basically an external cabling solution for PCIe, capable of data transfer speeds up to 64 Gbps. That makes it a better fit for external GPUs than Thunderbolt 4 or earlier, which have theoretical top speeds of 40 Gbps, but real-world speeds that are often substantially lower than that. In other words, the cables aren’t fast enough to let you get all the performance you’d expect from some high-end graphics cards.
Unfortunately OCuLink isn’t as widely adopted in the commercial PC space as USB4/Thunderbolt, which means that this dock will only work with the relatively small number of mini PCs, laptops, and handhelds that have compatible ports. And since the Link S-2 graphics dock doesn’t have a USB4/Thunderbolt port, it can only be used with computers that support OCuLink. If you need something with wider compatibility, you may have to look elsewhere.
Oh, and if the design of this device looks familiar, that may be because it not only looks a lot like the original PELADN Link S1, but also like the recently released MINISFORUM DEG1, which is also a barebones eGPU dock with an OCuLink connector. The DEG1 costs a little more though: it’s currently available for $99 from the MINISFORUM website.

As Thinkpad T495 does not have Thunderbolt (because it's AMD Ryzen Zen+) I figured I could add Oculink to the free WWAN M.2 2248 slot to run an external GPU for some gaming and local LLMs.
This slot can be used with nvme SSDs and some people have done so. So I thought I could use an M2 Oculink there as well since it's nvme too. Nope. This slot is compatible only with Lenovo's firmware whitelisted WWAN cards or nvme SSD disks 😕
So the only way that this will work is by getting an Oculink adapter for the larger M2 slot where I currently have my SSD, and use a smaller sized 2248 slot SSD (same as Steam Decks) since there is no firmware whitelisting on that slot. This means sacrificing the SSD speeds (2 lanes), and Oculink will have more bandwidth (4 lanes). Starting to think this is not worth it.
Anyway, was a fun experiment.

I've finally found the perfect mini PC for me! The Minisforum UM780 XTX with 64 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD. The port assignment is great (2x USB4 - one in the front, one in the back = very practical!), and OCulink option for even faster eGPU connection! Also very quiet and super fast! New year, new luck.
