May Sci-Fi Novel: Imago (Butler), the last in the Xenogenesis trilogy. I'd hoped it would follow Akin from Adulthood Rites, I really came to like him by the end of that book and respect the way he insisted on a future for humanity despite the high likelihood of them destroying each other. I hope he shows up and I hope that humanity makes him proud. Not sure what to expect from this book, but I'm not optimistic about humanity's chances on Mars. #octaviabutler #scifi #books #literature #reading

Oh shit.. I hadn’t read Octavia Butler’s Earthseed before.
She practically predicted Project 2025, and that it could lead to a christo-fascist America by 2032, where people can’t read, there’s no public schooling to speak of, and child labour is widespread.
It is a story of small groups of people living in the hills, trying to retain civilisation while America goes to war abroad… 🫣

Not only does Butler tell a captivating story, she connects the dots between racism and poverty in the US. She deals with climate change and its effects on a USA under a fascist takeover (and the results in the second book) in a very visceral way.
It is also a deep reflection on the nature of God outside established religions.
If there ever is a hall of fame of sci-fi, this duology belongs there. It is at last on par with Asimov's "Foundation"
