Why The #OceanCleanup Hasn’t Solved the #Plastic #Pollution Crisis
Global problems are rarely solved by one person or invention — even if they go viral. Ocean Cleanup didn’t work, for reasons experts said it wouldn’t.
Removing plastic would catch & kill many marine organisms, because the waters of this region aren’t a trash-filled biological desert. The area is full of #neuston species that may not be as charismatic as dolphins or sea turtles but ecologically important.

Researchers across the globe are tracking ocean currents to map how floating plastic travels through the Pacific and beyond. Every bottle, bag, or straw plays a part in shaping these massive gyres of waste. Understanding this movement is the first step toward cleaning our oceans and protecting marine life. 🌎🐠

Want a New Year's resolution that will save you time, money, water, and put less toxic gick on your body? Consider going "Poo-less". The One Community core team does this and we'd definitely recommend it. Your skin will be healthier and you will still smell good. Don't take our word for it though, here's an excellent Podcast by Paul Wheaton talking about his 2-year experience with this.

CW: Microplastics are everywhere, even in human testicles. So will the patriarchy finally step in? ~ The Guardian
“This is the sixth attempt at a plastic pollution treaty since plastic started turning up in brains, livers, kidneys, blood, joints and your balls, and the UN decided “hey, maybe this is a problem?” back in 2022. The previous five attempts have failed…
“Well may some men fear that the radical humanity of feminism will deprive them of status, power and even identity – but it’s not the sisterhood busting your balls, fellas. It’s chiefly the fossil-fuel interests of usual suspects like China, Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the US in the form of 460m tonnes of synthetic garbage spewed on to the planet every year.
“Now microplastics are found everywhere from the peak of Mt Everest to the depths of the Mariana Trench. Lord Howe Island is a volcanic rock island about 600km off the Australian east coast governed under a conservation authority applying strict visitor controls, and if you squeeze the muttonbirds there (please don’t), they are so full of plastic that they crunch.”

@theferret Could increasing the monetary incentives to return used fishing gear be a viable solution? A bit like a bottle consignment fee.
Also, how about better monitoring the activities with drones in the air and underwater? Come to think of it, how about autonomous drones that constantly look for ghost fishing gear and either haul it up themselves or mark and broadcast the stuff's position so that finding and picking it up is easier? (I know I know, technical solutions to social problems.... )

One of the most positive things on the webs is watching the rubbish pulled from the #GreatPacificGarbagePatch.
If they can raise enough money they can complete a job in less than a decade.

Ik weet dat het klein grut is op een grote begroting maar het irriteert mij mateloos dat de Ocean Cleanup ook volgend jaar weer geld krijgt van de Nederlandse belastingbetaler. Zonde geld :-)

CW: Philippines, ManillaBay, Oil Spill
‘An oil slick stretching about 3.7 kilometres was being carried by a "strong current" in an easterly, north-easterly direction…
‘“Strong winds and high waves were hampering response efforts…’
‘The MT Terra Nova "capsized and eventually submerged"…
The coast guard said it was investigating "if there was an existing weather disturbance in the vicinity waters when the maritime incident occurred."

On Dutch new today, the achievements of the ocean cleanup project. It's fantastic. Prevention is better but this is second best.
"Our cleaning technologies are deployed around the world as we conduct the largest cleanup in history. For over ten years, The Ocean Cleanup has been researching, extracting, and monitoring #plastic #pollution in #oceans and #rivers globally – with millions of kilograms removed to date."

#OceanCleanup now blocks (close to) all river plastic inflow in Kingston, Jamaica, using various types of Interceptors.
There are those who talk green and those who actually do something about it.

And they are about to start around Mumbai, India, maybe one of the largest problem source in the world. Exciting.

#ItTakesAnEffort"Part 7: Interceptor Overcomes Last Obstacles and Pulls Trash | Interceptor 004 | The Ocean Cleanup" [11 min]
by The Ocean Cleanuphttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvva0b7dfmQ
Quote:
"Since its design and construction in 2019, Interceptor 004 has been on quite the journey. We have documented every step - from its build to transport, and will continue to do so to the day that it extracts waste from one of the dirtiest rivers in the world. Interceptor 004 has a story of its own and you can follow it in this special Interceptor 004 series.
With behind-the-scenes footage and exclusive interviews with the teams persevering for its success, you will witness why the Interceptor is crucial to The Ocean Cleanup's mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic." -

Listening to this very interesting #Podcast interview with Boyan Slat, founder of the #OceanCleanup, about cleaning up plastic, whether some technology can be inherently good or evil, and how we can make a big difference in the world.
Also, TIL that he was born in Delft and dropped out of aerospace at TU Delft to found the ocean cleanup when he was 19. Respect.

#Plastic #Research #SpaceLocating accumulations of plastic in the ocean is the first step in cleaning it up - but hunting plastic at sea is costly and resource-intensive.
Scientists are working on a new way to find these hotspots: using hyperspectral satellites to detect 'plastic fingerprints' from space. We have now published an important hyperspectral dataset in collaboration with researchers from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Hawaii'i Pacific University, and the University of the Aegean and funded by the European Space Agency.
Hyperspectral sensors can find plastic from orbit. But how exactly does it work, and what are the challenges? Robin de Vries, Researcher at The Ocean Cleanup, talks us through it, shows how this cutting-edge dataset was collected, and explains how the dataset has been made available open-access to aid the global push to eliminate ocean plastic pollution."Using Satellites to Detect Plastic From Space | The Ocean Cleanup" [5:18 min]

@fj yeah, all plastic break down to microplastics eventually...
I think this will be the DDT/Asbestos of this century
The #oceancleanup project (and others) does great work to try to reduce this (just look at their interceptor 006, but feels like it's a little bit too late and we're going to have to live with the effects of this
hopefully it does not turn out it's more dangerous than we already know it is... if it does then maybe plastics is one of the Great Filter's

Mission Statement
[but don't hold me to that]After the devastating Dutch elections [22-11-'23] I decided to dedicate my toots back to the original goal.
I care about a lot of issues, most global some national; but I won't be 'tooting' about them all.First and formost I WANT to 'toot' about:
* #ClimateSolutions
Because I trust that most people reading know about the dreadfull future of climate change, I want to spread the, possible, solutions to a problem rather than reiterate on the problem.
* #ClimateJustice
One of those solution might be sueing the polluters or governments on human rights, violations or #Ecoside
* #ClimateAction
Action is by all means a solution.
* #ClimateEmergency
* #ClimateAs said I want to focus on the global issue. I don't want to nitpick on too much principles. Like: "What's worse: eating cows or driving diesel?" Both are devastating behaviors of intitled rich people!
On the otherhand therefore I truly respect ANY effort to make a change for the better.Most of all... I want to add instead of preach. Bring some bits of the puzzle to the table.
I'm NOT a scientist of any kind. I'm just a disabled old white guy typing on a desk reading and searching a lot.
I tend to toot 2 - 3 times a day, but that's NOT a promise.
I tend to follow anyone who 'retoots' or 'favourites' my toots. Forget it, I'm vain.
I might be interested in: #StopCopCity #ClimateFinance #Capitalism #Energy #USpolitics #Ukraine #Europe #Bernie #XR #OceanCleanup #NextBlue #InductionCooking #TaxTheRich #Africa #FemaleSoccer #Ajax #MíTambién #BigOil #Greta #CityDesign #VanessaNakate #2030 #Wildfires #Floods #PussyRiot #IPCC #AOC and more.If any of my 'followers' want to opt out... this is your chance, as always.

@normjess @nina_kali_nina It's a harsh time with increasing capitalism and conservatism worldwide, but there is definitely reason for hope as well. #DonutEconomy and #permaculture are slowly gaining traction. The #OceanCleanup is able to do what they do despite capitalism. Changes for the better are still possible.
