  1. Here our observation of stellar #occultation #Betelgeuse by asteroid (319) #Leona on 2023 Dec 12, observed from #Makroskooppi remote observatory in Fregenal de la Sierra, Spain. Occultation lasted about 7 seconds, which is less than predicted 11.6 seconds in central path. Our observatory's position was a bit north of central occultation path at N 38⁰ 13′ 10.89″ – W 6⁰ 37′ 54.32″ – 560m.

    The streetlamp a few hundred metres down the road is occulted by a chickpea suspended from a thread in front of an upstairs window as the camera is moved slowly sideways.

The stellar #occultation by (319) #Leona on 13 September 2023 in preparation for the occultation of #Betelgeuse: arxiv.org/abs/2309.12272 -> "The effective diameter in projected area derived from the positive detections at 17 sites turned out to be 66 km ± 2 km using an elliptical fit to the instantaneous limb. The body is highly elongated, with dimensions of 79.6 ± 2.2 km x 54.8 ± 1.3 km in its long and short axis, respectively, at the occultation time."

An update about the star #occultation by asteroid #Leona on 13 September was just given at the #ESOP 42 conference in #Armagh: chords were observed successfully from 17 (!) different sites in Spain, and a paper about what was learned will become available early next week! More sites than expected saw the star disappear (e.g. Calar Alto was expected to miss it but didn't), so Leona seems to be bigger than thought - but whether it will cover #Betelgeuse completely in December is still not clear.
