Finally got Vivaldi installed and updating on my phone via Obtainium - cutting out the middle man.
(Although had to fiddle about with the custom APK link filter so it could grab he correct one from Vivaldi's website.)

Been driving GrapheneOS for 6 months now and it's great.
Just had an app overhaul at the weekend and here are my app sources (not including default apps):
- 'Web Apps' (using Vanadium): 14
- Accrescent: 2
- Obtainium: 14
- Aurora Store: 7
- Direct APK download: 1 (Degoogled Paralino)The Vanadium web apps are the game changer. It's amazing how many 'apps' just point to a mobile view of their website. So use those instead for greater control!

RSS feed is simple and awesome idea. I run a rss server and sync feeds locally using #fluentreader app and today I learned there is lite version for Android
Named #FluentReaderLite but it is not available in #fdroid we have to download manually so I used #obtainium to install ithttps://github.com/yang991178/fluent-reader-lite
Another good option is #readyou android app which is available in fdroid

So decided to move from F-Droid to Obtainium for my FOSS/Proton apps, which means going from an app store to directly getting/updating APKs from source.
Using Vanadium 'app view' for other use cases and only using 'standard' apps (via Aurora Store) where there's no alternative.
My GrapheneOS phone is still ticking along nicely after 9-months of use.

The latest version of K-9 Mail (18.0) is as broken as version 17.0 and 17.1 are.
While the 17.x versions just crashed after showing the incoming mailbox version 18.0 is showing "offline" at the same time f-droid, obtainium, nextcloud notes and mastodon ☺ work fine.
Does K-9 Mail in these versions need access to Google or a Google account ?
Going again back to 16.1 and looking for a different E-Mail client on Android.

For some (I guess good) reasons, Z-Library enabled proof-of-work bot protection. When you visit the homepage without correct Cookies, the server returns a different HTML than the usual one with a status code 503, and it has a JavaScript challenge that the user's browser has to solve to get the correct Cookies. This unfortunately breaks my auto-updating workflow on my phone with Obtainium.

The core of what it is about ist the following: "In August 2025, #Google announced [ -> https://developer.android.com/developer-verification ] that starting next year, it will no longer be possible to develop apps for the Android platform without first #registering centrally with Google."

Unlike on Linux and Windows, where getting apps from Repos is the best way to go, on #Android it is very common for developers to publish builds themselves.
Most are on #Github, but luckily not everything, quite some are on #Gitlab.com, #Codeberg or selfhosted git forges.
This is preferred, as the Android package manager already stores public signing keys (even across profiles), so a repository is not needed to guarantee safe updates.
There is #TOFU though; trust on first use. You need to verify somehow, that the app you first install is from a valid source.
This is also the reason, why app changes like #Syncthing or #Signal require uninstalling and reinstalling, as another key is used.
Obtainium allows to get often far quicker updates, more apps, and no reliance on re-distributors.
You will contact Github and Gitlab a lot though, so getting an API key (best with a separate account) is needed for it to work reasonably if you have over a handful of apps.
The F-Droid repo and compatible 3rd party repos are also supported, but #FDroidBasic is better as it is more efficient, better for the repo owners and you.

It seems like a voluntary handover, but could just as well be malicious.
The problem is, the code is free, anyone could step in and make a fork that is verified trusted. It looks like researchxxl is that person now.

What's going on with Firefox Beta on Android? Tonight my Fenix installed through Obtainium on my de-googled Graphene OS did an update, and since then I cannot open it anymore. The crash log contains an ominous:
Caused by: com.google.android.play.core.review.ReviewException: -1: Review Error(-1): The Play Store app is either not installed or not the official version. (https://developer.android.com/reference/com/google/android/play/core/review/model/ReviewErrorCode.html#PLAY_STORE_NOT_FOUND)
It seems caused by the PlayStoreReviewPromptController which occasionally asks you to rate Firefox Beta on the Google Play Store.
Is it just me? I filed a bug report.

@Auli @jcs I'm daily driving a #Librem5 with #postmarketOS and everything really important works for my use case, including legacy unencrypted phone calls (VoLTE), SMS messages, 4G data, Wi-Fi, web browsing, email, #e2ee comms with #SignalApp, #DeltaChat, #Matrix, #XMPP, latest apps from #Flathub, etc.
Even running many Android apps with #Fdroid and #Obtainium work via #Waydroid although I tested that on #PureOS, not #postmarketOS.
Sure it's nowhere as fast as mainstream Android phones and has only basic camera support, but then those aren't my priorities when looking at #freedomtech.

@jonah Great to see that you touched on the #LinuxMobile option. I'm daily driving #postmarketOS on my #Librem5 and it's good enough to do most of what I need - the only thing does not work is recording sound in videos. Even running #FOSS Android apps using #Fdroid, #Obtainium, etc. on #Waydroid works, although the #LibertyPhone with more RAM and storage is better suited for it.
There's also the #FLX1 (runs #Droidian-based #FuriOS) which comes at a more affordable price, and Android app compatibility set up out of the box. I think that is more 'normie'-friendly and has decent specs overall compared to true Linux phones. Camera quality is as good as Android as it uses Android kernel and drivers.

I was bored, so #LineageOS happened. Which forced… gave me the opportunity to rethink some apps. A couple of highlights.
I returned to #GhostCommander, which wasn’t working well with older Androids (remember the Great SD Card Disaster?). It looks and behaves like an open-source version of #TotalCommander. If you don’t need SMB 1 support like I do, you should probably check out #MaterialFiles instead, It looks better.

- Apps by GrapheneOS for some GrapheneOS apps (and assorted ✨other✨ apps.
- Obtainium for installing apps directly from source/repos.
- Neo Store for installing apps who cannot be arsed to have.apkfiles in their repos (#AntennaPod), yet without dealing with the typical F-Droid shenanigans.
- Accrescent, because hell, why not! The more, the merrier!
- And, of course, Google Play Store for the corporate goblins.
