  3. "Creep" is the debut #single by the English rock band #Radiohead, released on 21 September 1992 by #EMI. It was included on Radiohead's debut album, #PabloHoney (1993). It features "blasts" of guitar noise and lyrics describing an #obsessive #unrequitedAttraction. Radiohead had not planned to release "Creep", and recorded it at the suggestion of the producers, #SeanSlade and #PaulQKolderie, while they were working on other songs.

  4. It's #NetLabelDay! Here's to all the #weird #obscure #obsessive #enthused #effusive #outsider #indie #unheard passion projects and all other #music that exists online outside the corporate sales-pitch panopticon AI Amazong Boogle hellscape.

I've had an almighty shittery of a year thus far being sick or recovering 4 out of 6 months, so I haven't prepared anything special this time round - which is a shame, as 2025 marks the 25th year I've run a #Netlabel. A potted history follows, for the two of you out there who are interested in such things!

Starting in 1999 I cobbled together what would now be called a netlabel which I called Novy Mir (after a combo of the samizdat adjacent Russian experimental magazine & the British new wave SF mag New Worlds), with a lot of help from Michael Moorcock and a little bit of Hawkwind-adjacency, I released ten or so albums on tape, a couple of CDs and attempted to make downloads work on dialup (failing on the latter). Later, 2010ish I formed Flamedog Records with Orlando Allen (lots of Gong family, Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth etc). This time with full independent self-hosted paid downloads (as opposed to Bandcramp, Spitifiy etc). In 2018, from the ashes of burnout and mental anguish I set up my third and hopefully final label Tryptophonic Records, which exists to this day. All downloads free, #CreativeCommons and "pay if you like".

So there you go. I recently released a #psychedelic #ambient #drone album entitled Longmeadow under the moniker of jlmxv, which is a collab between myself and @jlm - free to download at https://tryptophonic.com/longmeadow/

  5. A little poem I call "Lunchtime at my house"

Seventeen minutes washing up one pot
    I know that it's excessive.
Yeah I know that its a lot.
Will I even have the energy to make a single meal?
    What was I even cooking?
    Wait. Is this even real?

In case you missed it, zamboni served up a great list of WTIIF (What The Internet Is For) links in chasles' Metatalk post looking for an Ask Metafilter question about "websites that are amazingly specific, usually maintained by a cranky crank."

  10. @ndvirons

Oops, I keep accidentally tagging the "actually autistic" group in my replies, which feels very wrong considering my entire post was about not being sure about being #autistic given the lack of evaluation. 😰

Sorry for this, if it bothered anyone. 🙇 I may identify as #ND, but I try to avoid claiming to be autistic as it strikes me like people who claim to be psychologically #obsessive just because they like to organize their desk. As awareness for these topics grows, I don't want to step on anyone's identities or experiences while still considering my own. 🫣

  11. Ah the sound of garden power tools neighbour man strimming his pocket handkerchief lawn endlessly. Mercifully I've been out out and have luckily missed the many many many hours of his obsessive petrol strimming (sounds like a Canadian logging crew) . Yesterday he mowed his tiny lawn for several hours. #garden #obsessive

  12. On an #Aliens fan group to which I belong, there is a discussion going on about a particular plot point, the kind of endless dissection #obsessive #fans know well. I know this very well, because I’m one of them. Someone said “read this tie-in novel, it explains everything!” Then someone else called it “fan fiction,” and a third participant objected strenuously. Ah, #fandom: God help me, I do love it so.

The most money I ever made from writing, by far, was by co-authoring a #StarTrek novel†. It did quite well, as Star Trek novels tend to do. I lived for the better part of a year on the advance, and the royalties were a nice supplement to my income for several years afterward. Over the decades since, many people have told me it was one of their favorite novels ever. I don’t know how many copies I’ve signed. Feels good, man.

But I don’t kid myself—it’s fan fiction. So is all tie-in fiction to TV and movie series, unless an episode or a movie takes the story and puts it on screen. I’m not sure if that’s ever happened with Star Trek, in the very long series of novels based on multiple iterations of the show, and I know it’s never happened with the #Alienverse. All the tie-in novels, comics, and games are non-canonical. They just kind of exist out there in the realm of what-if and might-have-been. Maybe someday someone will stumble across them, floating in the deep, and do a salvage operation …

#StarWars is the one partial exception I know of, with some portions of the extended universe making it at least into the animated series. In general, though, screen franchise owners don’t think much of novels etc. They figure tie-ins are of interest only to hardcore fans, and there aren’t enough of those to make up the audience needed to justify big-budget productions. To them it’s just a way to squeeze a few extra bucks out of the property.

I’m not happy about this, because a lot of really great worldbuilding happens at the edges of known space. In the case of the Alienverse, for example, I think the #DarkHorse comics would have made a much better foundation for a third and fourth movie than what we actually got. But it’s a sadly consistent pattern.

†ST:TNG # 8, The Captains’ Honor, by David and Daniel Dvorkin, in case you were wondering. David is my father, who has also written a few other Star Trek novels and a lot of original novels. Despite the money, neither of us has any desire ever to go through the experience of dealing with Paramount ever again.
