Today's #megafauna is #obdurodon tharalkooschild, a 3-foot long #platypus that roamed Australia between 15 and 5 million years ago. It was described in 2013 from a fossilized tooth. Modern platypuses lack teeth, which this species likely used to eat crustaceans, frogs, and turtles.
Other toothed platypus species have been found before, but they lived about 60 million years ago in what is now South America. Tharalkooschild suggests that the platypus had more than a single evolutionary line.
