  1. Oh hey, my Senator, Dick Durbin, finally did something I like. It's nice to see the Open App Markets Act revived. I hope it actually goes somewhere this time. :blobfoxreachaww: I'm not a huge fan of the carve outs or giving Apple and Google final say on what's allowed on their platforms, but it expressly calls for side-loading so that's good.

Apple and Google should absolutely not be able to tell consumers what apps they can and can't have on their devices. It's wild to me how many people support these billion dollar corporations' ability to censor hardware they paid for. :corgi_wtf1: Allowing side-loading and curbing the worst, most anticompetitive behavior by these companies should be a no-brainer to everyone.

  2. Welp, it's official:

#KOSA is not in the #omnibus. That's good news.

But neither are #AICOA and #OAMA, and that's terrible news.

#BigTech giants spent more than $120 million lobbying against these bills, running misleading TV ads in swing states, standing up #astroturf groups that claimed to advocate for small businesses, you name it.

This isn't over. You'll see news saying "Big Tech won again."

The truth is their days our numbered. Our movement is growing. It's only a matter of time.

  3. 📣 PLZ READ AND BOOST!

I've been working on #digitalrights and #techpolicy issues since right after the #SOPA blackout.

We spend most of our time trying to STOP bad legislation (think: #EarnItAct, #SESTA FOSTA, #KOSA etc)

It's *so rare* we get a chance to pass ACTUALLY GOOD legislation.

We have one of those once in a lifetime chances right now: the #BigTech #antitrust bills #AICOA and #OAMA

There is a real chance these bills make it into the #omnibus. Do the thing AntitrustVoteNow.com

  4. Sorry to link to the #birdsite but I did a long thread there about how #KOSA (the deeply misguided #KidsOnlineSafetyAct) is a major threat to online access to #abortion information, fundraising and organizing.

Congressional leaders are deciding like RIGHT NOW what bills go into the #omnibus package. Anyone who can please reach out to oppose #KOSA and support actually good bills like #OAMA, #AICOA, and #ADPPA.

  5. #OAMA / S. 2710 is a straightforward bill that would:

    1) End Apple and Google's duopoly, allowing independent developers to build on a level playing field

    2) Make it way harder for authoritarian governments to abuse app store choke point for censorship

  6. The TechFreedom weekly newsletter is out, featuring #OAMA, #KOSA, spam, surveillance, obscenity, judicial ethics, and more:

  7. Big Tech's self-dealing and walled gardens are a big part of the reason it has been hard for open source, federated, and decentralized alternative social media networks like #mastodon to grow and compete with the corporate giants.

#AICOA and #OAMA won't magically fix that overnight, but they'll put us on a path where alternatives like #mastodon, #matrix, etc can compete on a more level playing field and eventually surpass or replace companies like Meta, Twitter, YouTube, etc

  8. URGENT: Congressional leaders are deciding TODAY whether or not to move forward crucial Big Tech #antitrust legislation.

There is still a real chance we can get #OAMA and #AICOA over the finish line this year. These are important bills that would crack down on self dealing and #monopoly abuses. This matters to #mastodon. It matters to #opensource. It matters for #humanrights.

  9. RETWEET TO SOUND THE ALARM!!!

Congressional leaders are deciding as soon as TODAY whether or not to advance the Big Tech #antitrust bills #OAMA (S. 2710) and #AICOA (S. 2992)

Tell 🐦SenSchumer 🐦LeaderMcConnell 🐦POTUS: it's time to rein in Big Tech!

  10. In a new coalition letter, TechFreedom and a group of civil liberties orgs and law professors argue that the Open App Markets Act remains deeply flawed. #OAMA

  11. BREAKING: We're hearing about a "hotline" push to advance the Open App Markets Act (#OAMA), an *actually good!* bill that would rein in Apple and Google's monopoly abuses and protect open source projects, human rights, and more.

Tell your Senators to vote YES on OAMA / S. 2710!

  12. Here's our STATEMENT on the #JCPA being removed from the #NDAA. Now it's time for Dems to deliver on their promise to rein in #BigTech. #AICOA and #OAMA are the only tech bills left standing. Schumer is out of excuses. Put them up for a vote! fightforthefuture.org/news/202

  13. The #JCPA is out of the #NDAA.

    That's good news.

But now Congress needs to deliver on real tech reform. Put #AICOA and #OAMA up for a vote! 🐦SenSchumer 🐦SpeakerPelosi

QT evan_greer: #JCPA is out of the #NDAA.

    Quick statement from 🐦fightfortheftr

"The JCPA was a bad bill that would have further entrenched Big Tech and Big Media conglomerates and help Alden Capital and Sinclair, not journalists. It's good that it was taken out of the must-pass NDAA. But

  14. It's official. #AICOA and #OAMA are the only tech bills left standing. If Schumer and Pelosi can't get their act together to move them, it's

    a) a travesty for humanity and democracy and all that and

    b) just a huge embarrassment for Biden and the Dems, utterly failing to deliver on ANY legislation to rein in Big Tech

JCPA was a bad bill, but the fact that Schumer pushed for it to be included in the NDAA also shows what he's been saying on AICOA and OAMA is bogus. Just put em up, they'll pass

  15. @inklings @team fair enough, but ... this specific bill is currently being included in a must-pass package and could very well become law. So... it's pretty important to discuss the specifics. We strongly support other efforts to rein in Big Tech giants and crack down on their abusive practices (like #AICOA and #OAMA).

But just because a bill is trying to solve a real problem doesn't make it a good bill. #JCPA is not a good bill. That's what's important right now, given the urgency

  16. Further proof the #JCPA is just a mess and should NEVER be attached to must-pass legislation.

We need bills that *actually* support local indie journalism, and since they don't have one Congress should pass #AICOA and #OAMA instead.

  17. NEW: I wrote for #Vice about the terribly misguided "Kids Online Safety Act," or #KOSA, which top Democrats are trying to include in a must-pass spending package.

This bill has a lot of the same problems as bills like #SESTA /
    #FOSTA and the #EarnItAct.

It would make kids less safe, and would be weaponized to target resources for #LGBTQ youth and censor online access to abortion information.

Congress should pass real legislation like #AICOA and #OAMA instead.

  18. #JCPA hasn’t even made it out of committee in the House, but 🐦SenSchumer wants to put it into a defense bill. This is after breaking promises that we’d have a vote on #AICOA and #OAMA— strong antitrust bills that would actually help reign in Big Tech.

  19. Instead of holding big tech accountable by bringing #AICOA and #OAMA to a vote as 🐦SenSchumer promised, we are hearing that he’s looking to put a handout to Murdoch, Alden Capital, and Gannett in the National Defense Authorization Act. Why you should be outraged, a thread.

  20. BREAKING: Instead of actually holding Big Tech accountable by moving #AICOA ands #OAMA antitrust bills we just got word @SenSchumer is planning to include the #JCPA, a terrible bill messes with the basics of how the Internet works & benefits Rupert Murdoch, in the must-pass NDAA. actionnetwork.org/petitions/do

  21. Big Tech companies ARE doing real harm to kids. But #KOSA won't make things better. Congress needs to pass real laws like #AICOA, #OAMA, and #ADPPA (which needs to be improved but is a good start) to chip away at Big Tech abuses. And we need robust #FTC enforcement too.

  22. We’re joining with 45 public interest groups in a letter supporting the American Innovation and Choice Online Act and Open App Markets Act. Read more to learn why Congress must pass these bipartisan bills to rein in Big Tech: publicknowledge.org/AICOLastCa #AICOA #OAMA

  23. Dems holding the Senate means Chuck Schumer is fresh out of excuses and needs to deliver ASAP on tech policy promises like

    * Confirm Gigi Sohn to the #FCC so they can restore #NetNeutrality and #privacy rules

    * Pass #AICOA and #OAMA antitrust bills to crack down on #BigTech self dealing

    * Bigger lift but they should improve / strengthen #ADPPA and pass that too. End #SurveillanceCapifalism as a biz model

More analysis from @team here fightforthefuture.org/2023

  24. First, it’s essential to get a couple things done in Congress' “lame duck” session:

    1. Confirming Gigi Sohn to the FCC to reinstate #NetNeutrality
    2. Passing popular antitrust bills #AICOA + #OAMA

We’ve been working on these all year, and now it’s the final countdown.

  25. Obviously election results are still coming in but it's looking really likely that Republicans will control the House. That means we really really need ALL HANDS ON DECK to push for Congress to pass the Big Tech antitrust bills #AICOA and #OAMA during the "lame duck" (we really need a better term) session after the election. These next few weeks are critical if we want to rein in tech monopoly abuses. incoming GOP leadership will not move these bills. AntitrustVoteNow.com

  26. Can we get folks here on #mastodon talking about the Big Tech #antitrust bills #AICOA and #OAMA? These bills would crack down on some of the anti-competitive practices that giants like Facebook and YouTube use to make it harder to switch to #decentralized or #federated alternatives. We've got a shot of passing them after the election but we need to go hard! bloomberg.com/news/articles/20

  27. For better or for worse I am still on the birdsite and I just did an extremely long thread about what the #midterms mean for crucial tech policy fights like #Section230, content moderation, #Antitrust bills like #AICOA and #OAMA, privacy legislation, and more. @team will make this a blog post soon but in the meantime you can read it here twitter.com/evan_greer/status/
