I was just at the CVS on Fruitvale in Oakland. So many shelves were empty. It felt like it was in the last stages of going out of business.
Yesterday they had closed at 2:30 pm referencing "recent events".
When I went in today, I asked a helpful staff member what had happened, and he said that someone had smashed one of the large windows and so they had to close.
Then I asked him why the shelves are so empty. He said people are buying a lot and people were stealing a lot. I asked him how frequently people are stealing a lot of stuff (not just one or two items), and he said a couple of times per hour.
Obviously, this isn't sustainable. And I doubt very much that recent political changes are to blame, although that's what the local "not progressives" or "conservatives" or "fascists", whatever label fits, would have us believe.
Where are we headed, I wonder?
