  1. Bennett Miller – „Moneyball“ (2011)

(ZDF, Wh)

  2. Some random #WPBL thoughts.

I'm so happy to see this league. I'm so happy to be able to watch baseball that isn't tainted by the MLB (bitter #OaklandAthletics fan here). And I was so happy to see so many women and young girls in the stands for the opening game. So much joy in my heart this morning.

Holy heck that was a fun game! On average I'd say the level of play was roughly single A level. Remember that there is effectively no organized player development for women's baseball in most of the world, so the fact that these women are demonstrating serious baseball chops is amazing and speaks to the passion and dedication they have for the game. I will be very interested to see how the quality of play develops over the intense one month season.

With only four teams and all games being played at Robin Roberts Stadium, these players are going to learn each other and the park effects as the season goes along. We'll see who can best make adjustments!

As an Oakland fan, I can't tell you how pumped I was to see Dave Stewart and Tony La Russa at the first game (sorry St Louis, Tony will forever be Oakland to me). Dave is apparently part of the league brain trust, but I hope he will also be providing pitching guidance to the players. If you've never seen Stewart in game mode, go back and watch some of his highlights on YouTube--particularly his Roger Clemens matchups. Classic.

What these players need are "reps". Hundreds of fly balls to improve their reads and routes on balls. Infield practice. Catchers smothering balls and runner pickoffs. Baserunning. The raw skills are there, it's just giving the players opportunity to practice. I will note that the pitchers did great fielding their positions during the opening game, showing veteran level poise off the mound.

My early favorites are LA Queens captain, catcher, and two-way star Maggie Foxx (last name a throwback to #Athletics bopper Jimmy Foxx?). Second base Amira Hondras impressed with her steady defense and excellent bat control-- team RBI leader after the first game! Meggie Meidlinger looks great in the closer role.

Catcher Denae Benitez is obviously the spark plug for the NY Heights, going 4-4 with the first (and so far only) home run in the league. Right fielder Natsuki Yonetani always has a smile on her face and plays with real joy. Sorry she missed the ball that led to the Queens comeback.

The league marketing really hyped Queens pitcher Ayumi Sato, and she's a legend in Japanese women's baseball. Her debut was obviously not what anybody wanted, but her team really picked her up with the win. I believe Sato is too much of a professional not to bounce back from this and I hope for great things from her.

Little League phenom Mo'Ne Davis was also part of the hype train leading up to opening day. Folks need to remember that she stopped playing baseball after her little league success and has only recently returned to the sport. She's a remarkable athlete. If she can block out the expectations and get into a groove, she'll find her form. But they shouldn't be putting the pressure of the leadoff spot on her until she finds her stride.

Anyway, I'm a bit giddy about the new league. I hope they can generate some real buzz and viewership!

And, yeah, about that TV coverage... infosec.exchange/@hal_pomeranz

  5. Taking a tour of the A’s Ballpark Experience Center in Vegas – Sports Business Journal

Immersing myself in the Vegas future of the A’s

    By Joe Lemire, 12.16.2025

The SBJ Tech Sandbox series is where we share our experiences testing products, gear, solutions and more in the sports tech space.

Editor’s Note: Great article, and excited about new MLB and LV ballpark. It looks inviting, new, open, and a great place for games and outings. Vegas does it again. I had SORA create a brief video from the image of the park. Construction underway, due for opening for 2028 MLB Season! Enjoy! –DrWeb

LAS VEGAS — After removing my shoes, the curtain is pulled back, and I enter the Cube.

Five of the six sides of the space, including below my feet, are fully outfitted with LED screens that spring to life with a few touches of an iPad.

It’s suddenly 2028, and I’m standing in owner John Fisher’s suite, overlooking home plate at the Athletics’ new Las Vegas Ballpark. Each new tablet tap transports me around the venue. I’m standing on the pitcher’s mound. I’m in a centerfield hospitality space. I’m floating above the city looking at the park’s proximity to the airport (The short distance to private aviation won’t apply to me).

The Immersive Cube is housed in the Ballpark Experience Center, the showcase built by the A’s to tell the team story, preview the construction and sell tickets and hospitality packages.

It replicates virtual reality without the headset, as 26-million pixels enclose 3,500 cubic feet, with many miles of cables and racks of servers hidden away. Built in the 3D development program Unity and enhanced with Advent’s Experience Management System, the Cube lets A’s fans and prospective ticket buyers imagine their place in the under-construction ballpark.

“The Immersive Cube is a space that is a pinnacle of this experience space,” said John Downie, SVP/Strategic Solutions of Advent, the sports experience design agency that led this project. “Everybody likes to see themselves within the story.”

Advent touts it as a first-of-its-kind installation in North American sports. And the A’s can load new renderings as needed to display updates or meet requested customizations from, say, a potential suite buyer.

“This is not something that is on rails,” Downie said. “It’s a space that can flex with the storytelling needs. But, of course, this is Vegas. So there’s a certain wow factor that is required in here.”
