  1. Anyone keen to join a working group experimenting with a Hypermedia-Driven Architecture approach by applying it to an existing web app, Loomio, under the auspices of the Open App Ecosystem community?

    loomio.com/d/VYPyO17M/building

@daz would you be willing to mentor such a group, given your excellent primer was my introduction to HDA?

  2. Any Open App Ecosystem members who don't login to Loomio very often or allow it to send email notifications for new polls in the OAE group? I've started a sense check on the question of whether there's any interest in forming a subgroup to experiment with building a Hypermedia-Driven Architecture version of Loomio;

I'd love to know your honest opinions on this, whatever they might be.

  10. OAE Announces Call for Proposals for the Teacher Training Program (TTP) 2024.

The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education (OAE) is excited to announce the call for proposals for the Teacher Training Program (TTP) 2024 8download the poster in pdf). This offers the National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs) an opportunity to seek financial support for organising impactful teacher training and development workshops in their respective countries or regions. This grant encourages an active collaboration among a NAEC team member, a local teacher, and, where feasible, an astronomer. This team will work together to create and conduct a teacher workshop tailored to their specific preferences, where teachers will be empowered with the astronomy knowledge and skills that they could use in their classrooms.

We invite and encourage anyone working in astronomy education together with their NAECs to submit proposals for financial support of up to 2000 Euros, to organise and run the teacher training and development workshop in 2024.

Collaboration with a NAEC team member is a prerequisite for submitting proposals, teachers and/or astronomers interested in leading a workshop are encouraged to connect with a NAEC in their country for potential collaboration.
The OAE currently has NAECs in approximately 120 countries worldwide. For TTPs proposed from India, the Associate NAECs will be treated on par with the NAECs.

In the previous year, OAE proudly supported 21 TTP workshops worldwide, and we aspire to support more high-impact initiatives in 2024. Special thanks to OAE Center Italy and OAE Center India for their dedicated funding support for primary school astronomy teacher training and TTPs in the Indian region, respectively.

Detailed information, including eligibility criteria and rules, can be found on our webpage. The application deadline is April 15th, 2024.

  17. Monitoring, reporting, and verification (#MRV) refers to the multistep process to quantify the amount of CO₂ removed by a CO₂ removal (#CDR) activity.

Here, we make recommendations for MRV for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (#OAE) research, arguing that it has an obligation for comprehensiveness, reproducibility, and transparency, as it may become the foundation for assessing large-scale deployment.

Both observations and numerical simulations will be needed for MRV.

  30. If we want to track the result of an ocean alkalinity enhancement (#OAE) for ocean CO₂ removal (#CDR), a tracer release followed by continuous survey for ~3 weeks is reasonable.

To do so from a suitable ship (day rate $50k/day) will cost $1 million for just 20 days of ship time.

The point is, this ain't gonna be cheap. People assume that we can just dump some rocks or some NaOH into the ocean and the job is finished. However, doing it right and having proper MRV will be expensive.

  31. In a 0.3x0.3deg global circulation model (#MITgcm, #ECCO) we model scenarios in which #OAE is applied in coastal waters (in strips, 37-592km off-shore), without exceeding a small ∆pH or ∆Ω.

  32. Our new paper (with Jing He) on #ocean #alkalinity and #OAE / #mCDR is out: bg.copernicus.org/articles/20/
We examine the sensitivity of pH and #CaCO3 sensitivity along different coasts as well as the equilibration timescale of #CO2 uptake.

  33. For carbon dioxide removal (#CDR), does anyone else think of #EnhancedWeathering, which is usually thought of as a terrestrial technique, as just another way to eventually add #alkalinity to the #ocean so it's really ocean CDR and #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement (#OAE)?
