These friend be puttin in the HARD YARDS. This tool is becoming a very powerful resource to help you #degoogle
It lists out all the apps you have and checks them against their database finds a record of it and lists that right out for you as #foss or #proprietary
If you disagree with the provided information I have found them to be very responsive to updates both in the app fir the database and in their issues on Git.

#TIL that Flounder has a Lemmy community;
@[email protected]"Community for the @flounder online user group for free software people in Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding areas."
Any software freedom folks in the South Pacific are also welcome to join our Discourse forum;
https://community.iridescent.nz/
Hey @lightweight, in the new year, it could be a worthwhile experiment to set up peer-to-peer federation with Flounder, using the Discourse AP plugin.

If you are a software freedom champion with a connection to Aotearoa/ NZ, please consider joining and starting some discussions at this community forum, started by people associated with NZOSS;
https://community.iridescent.nz/
If you already operate a Discourse forum, or another forum that has some level of ActivityPub federation support, please contact us to discuss the possibility of federating our forums in some way.

Alice starts a new room called #room:server.foo on her hobby homeserver.
Bob joins with his account, @bob:otherserver.bla, and adds a local address, which Alice publishes.
A week later, Alice decides she can't be bothered with server.foo and shuts it down.
She rejoins the room with her new matrix account using #nzoss:otherserver.bla.
The experiences of joining and using the room is just the same as if server.foo was still alive, and she'd used #room:server.foo.
Does that make sense?
(2/?)

So set up a new #Aotearoa-based #Matrix server during the #NZOSS virtual gathering/meetup last night. The #SynapseAdmin 3rd party add-on makes a huge difference.

Periodic reminder that this #NZOSS #Mastodon instance (along with a lot of other #FOSS services - https://nzoss.nz/services) are available to the Aotearoa NZ community for active use and demonstration purposes - all onshore, here in Aotearoa, owned by NZers - *all at no cost for users*, thanks to volunteer system admin & the generous sponsored cloud service provided by https://CatalystCloud.nz: many thanks for your many years of rock solid, cutting edge, fully #FOSS, tech services and support!

Eugh. Forgot that being unemployed loses me access to MS Office.
#NZOSS peops... Is there still two camps fighting it out between #OpenOffice & #LibreOffice? Or has one of them stretched into the lead?
TBH, I'm gonna be really looking for something that can handle more complex Word docs, or #PDFs, without playing absolute havoc with the formatting.
Also tagging #NZTwits for reach, sorry for techie spam 🙃
-
@lightweight the call for the #nzgovernment by #nzoss to start a #mastodon server is interesting. Any precedents? BTW the #nzoss server needs more details on the about page, who’s welcome to open an account, commitment of service (for example x months grace on closing down etc) #
-
Maybe Aotearoa needs some kind of civil society tech watchdog, a la EFF. NZOSS and InternetNZ do some of that stuff, but they seem somewhat constrained by their other roles.
-
@lightweight what an interesting tutorial you have here about #OnlyOffice https://tech.oeru.org/installing-nextcloud-hub-onlyoffice-ubuntu-1804, Dave. Thank you.

[Stay at Home] [NixNet etc.] Five Ethical & Free Online Services for Everybody in #COVID19 Pandemic
I send my gratitude to the president and owners of these services: @amolith @selea @tobi @lightweight. I have used your services of BigBlueButton, LibreSpeedTest, and more and they are all useful to me.

#HatTip to @lightweight for setting up and caretaking the #NZOSS services.

@cubicgarden a #FreeCode option that could replace both #Zoom and a white board is #BigBlueButton. You can try it out with the #NZOSS Community Room here, details here:

@musicman I keep hearing that #JitsiMeet is a massive resource hog. Have you evaluated #BigBlueButton as a possible alternative? You can try out the UX using the Community Room on the BBB instance #NZOSS is running:

@bstacey how are you going with this? Another free code option that could replace both #Zoom and a white board is #BigBlueButton. You can try it out with the #NZOSS Community Room here:
https://bbb.nzoss.nz/b/dav-hm3-m7xClick on 'Shared Notes' to see the white board substitute.
-
@lightweight what do you reckon about running a #Guppe instance on the #NZOSS servers?
-
@lightweight you're preaching to the choir mate ;) But you can't deny that a decision to exclude proprietary vendors from consideration improves the chances of getting contracts for those already working with free code software. I know that #NZOSS isn't intended to be a trade association, but in a small county like #NZ, with its membership overlapping heavily with those in the industry, it's highly likely to seem like one to those outside its circles.
-
@lightweight obviously I share these concerns ;) So I would focus on educating folks at #LGNZ, #ElectoralCommission etc about the importance of independently auditable voting software *and* hardware. I suspect they see #NZOSS as partisan, since its members and their companies stand to gain financially from a free market in free code voting software. So I would work with #InternetNZ, or another organization not vulnerable to that perceived conflict of interest, to do that education work.
-
@marijn totally agree with what you're saying here. One thing that came up in discussions on a #NZOSS mailing list was that many business people want to pay a fair amount to support the long-term viability of free code projects, but business accounting makes it difficult for them. If they can itemize the spending as a business expense, rather than a charitable donation, or worse just giving money away, that makes it much easier.
-
In summary, it was an honour and a privilege to be part of the efforts by #CreativeCommonsAotearoaNZ (now #Tohatoha) and #NZOSS to bring NZGOAL and its Software Extension into existence, and to contribute to the consultations on them. Now that we have a new, more public-spirited government, it's time to start campaigning for 2.0 versions that maximize public access to publicly-funded works *and* their derivatives.
-
@ignitionigel cool! How did you discover the #fediverse? I saw about 1 (one) kiwi other than me here until this #NZOSS instance was set up
-
@lightweight OK. As you know IANAL, but IMHO it would be better if you could point to an official decision from the #NZOSS committee that the org takes liability for all web services hosted under NZOSS domain names. That way the limited liability provision of Incorporated Society law would protect anyone helping set up or run the services from personal liability.
-
@lightweight good question. Who is legally liable for this instance, you personally, or #NZOSS?
