@lina I'd agree that you shouldn't have a single identity online, because you don't have a single identity offline, either.
Nobody "is the same person" while cuddling in bed with their spouse as when their boss says "come to my office", just to take a couple of examples.
Here's something I wrote back when Google Plus existed, and was trying to enforce a "real names" policy (or back during the NymWars, for those who remember that word…): https://kagan.mactane.org/blog/2011/07/17/how-many-identites-does-a-single-person-have/

@anime_reference a technical marvel that was mismanaged to hell
the death knell was when they added a real name policy and the whole #nymwars thing happened

CW: Long thread/12
A couple years after Schmidt's anti-privacy manifesto, Google launched #GooglePlus, a social network where everyone was required to use their "real name."
This decision - justified as a means of ensuring civility and a transparent ruse to improve ad targeting - kicked off the #NymWars:

CW: Star Trek: Picard, S03E01 spoilers
So, I'm sure it's just to make use dislike #CaptainShaw right away, but in what world does a #Starfleet captain decide by what name a crew member goes?
If #SevenOfNine says her current name is Seven, then he should just call her Commander Seven, and not insist on her going by her birth name of #AnnikaHansen.When the guy on #BeverlyCrusher's ship said he was her son, I half expected him to say "hi, dad". However, I also feel like the writers only want us to think that way. I'm guessing he might be some kind of clone / genetically engineered person?
Still not fond of #RaffiMusiker, though I can't quite put my finger on it why... Something about the kind of storylines she usually is involved with?
Glad they didn't actually make her an addict who had fallen off the wagon again though.Nice seeing a reference to the #Enterprise C btw, in the form of Captain #RachelGarrett.

You know who else has noticed that this is all about to turn into another episode of #nymwars? @pluralistic, natch.
Please enjoy his thread on the subject, complete with a detour into Eastern European Jewish immigration, a subject near and dear to my heart: https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/02/nonbinary-families/#red-envelopes

@parisba judging by the "required" on both the First and Last Name fields, I guess mononymic people aren't welcome. :(

@Xenophrenia
possibly by my wallet name :)

This is how #Niantic's game #HarryPotterWizardsUnite currently enforces their poly-nymic #namingPolicy:
https://mastodon.social/media/0Pyd858eb5E5jRP7vH0
Mind you, these name fields are *optional*, and (supposedly) aren't even stored on their servers, so it makes even less sense for them to enforce any rules for them, and not just use a single 'display name' field.

Let's see if this #Feedback submitted through #Niantic's support bot for #HarryPotter #WizardsUnite will make their #MinistryID #namingPolicy more inclusive by allowing the use of a #mononym without workarounds such as including a period.

@Algot
I'm surprised I haven't seen #mononym mentioned yet. Especially since registration forms often assume that people have a first name and last name, making it rather difficult for them to register with their preferred or even actual name.
(This was a major issue in the early days of #GooglePlus for instance, which made #nymwars a rather trending topic.) -
@Bluedepth
could also be #Niantic's first game, #Ingress. Though Ingress Agents tend to only look at their scanner app at the actual portals, as there's nothing to do in between locations.Btw @cj, you can choose a (public) username, as well as a (private) wizard name. Looks like Niantic hasn't learnt from the #Nymwars though, as your wizard name needs to consist of a first and last name. You can change it freely though, by the looks of it.
