  1. #NuuchaNulth #Tseshaht #Hupacasath leaders in Port Alberni were instrumental in the rights movement in Canada.

"Eneas said at the time he was on the phone regularly with his friend George Watts… They wanted to see if the RCMP would show up for this fake protest at a bridge in Port Alberni, B.C. Eneas said Watts and a group of community members waited on a ridge overlooking the bridge that afternoon to see what would happen. "

  2. Today's sunset over Arbutus Ridge in #portalberni #nuuchanulth #tseshaht :TseshahtFN:
    #Hupacasath :hupacasath:

Only 20 or so more days of it moving down the ridge line....

(the plume is mostly steam from the paper mill)

  3. #ThrowbackThursday
Warming up one of the #Indigenous drums that I've been gifted in the recent 10 years. All my other gifted drums prior to past decade were stolen by RCMP colonial terrorists at past protest raids. I only have one #handmade #deerskin #drum left from the three that were gifted to me during the last decade. One was broken by hereditary Namgis Chief Alfred on past wild salmon flotilla & another was stolen from me, by RCMP CIRG, on a past roadside support camp raid near Gitxsan territory.

  4. check that. I think there may have actually been over 1000 people walking. They are still coming into the hall and they stretch all the way down road still

  5. The marchers are almost here.
Lots of birds around. A seagull making more awake than he should lol. A bald eagle. And a Raven watching us from across the river

  6. enjoying the rivers edge while we wait for the march. It started up river about 2km from here at the former site of the Alberni Indian Residential School.

The area across the Somass/Tsu'amaas River is a large estuary. Huge salmon habitat (chinook, coho, sockeye). It was also the location of the first settlers to get here (both Spanish and British)

  7. Walked from my house to about the halfway point of the full march waiting for them to arrive. This is Victoria Quay, the Welcoming Figures and the Whaling Sculpture.

These are at the foot of Johnston Road / Highway 4 in #portalberni at the Tsu'amaas (Somass) River.

It smells of the ocean, and the end of the salmon run which might sound unpleasant, but it's not. :)

  9. Our son is getting a real west coast experience today. He spent the night with his high school outdoors class hiking and camping on Flores Island, Ahousaht Territory. It is north of Clayoquot Sound and Tofino.

Camped on the beach last night. It was beautiful and sunny yesterday. It will be cold and raining this morning. 😆 And they’ll be traversing a small tidal river on their way back. Fun times!

  10. I have a recurring annual calendar appointment for March 16. Today is the 102nd anniversary of Comox-Alberni MP A.W. Neill's first speech in his 21 year career in the House of Commons (1921-45) where he called for a "white British Columbia”.

Neill was a white supremacist, anti-Asian racist, and one of the loudest voices for Japanese Internment. He was also an Indian Agent dealing with First Nations and Residential Schools on Vancouver Island's West Coast.

In 2021 his name was removed from a local school but he remains honoured with a street name.

I will continue reminding people of this until that honour is removed.

(A full report about him starts on page 82 of the City of Port Alberni Agenda from January 23, 2017)

  11. I'm really proud that our community, the entire community, is taking action and proposing solutions to the toxic drug crisis. I feel very grateful that we have Tseshaht First Nation leading us in many ways in this effort.

  12. “If Canada can afford to build these buildings and run them in our territory for all the years they did… as residential school buildings, they can afford to tear them down and help us build new and heal from what happened here,” said Watts.”
