Last night was rough. I talked to my mom, and we had to face something I've been dreading. My dog Squeaker — a 12-year-old miniature pinscher who's been with me most of his life — may not be able to visit me anymore. I'm in a nursing home, transitioning toward a group home, and most facilities don't allow pets. Even if they did, the last visit we tried didn't go well. He spent most of it whining and pacing, stressed and confused. He couldn't settle until the very end, when he finally laid in my lap for a bit. He has a heart murmur. He's getting old. The visits might be doing more harm than good, and I may have to make the choice to stop them for his sake. That thought breaks my heart.

So I went to bed carrying that. The night felt impossibly long. I slept some, but the awake stretches were heavy.

This morning, two things broke through.

One: my toothpaste disappeared. It's a special unflavored mineral kind I order on Amazon because I can't use mint. Daniel, one of the CNAs, thought another staff member might have confiscated it — which happens sometimes when they don't recognize something and assume I shouldn't have it. So he had people searching the facility for an alternative while he hunted for mine. He found it (someone had stuck it inside a box), but then had to keep telling the search party to stand down as they kept coming down the hall toward my room. We were both laughing.

Two: I was trying to wet my hair for brushing — the only way it cooperates. I had the squirt bottle in one hand and was feeling my hair with the other to check if it was wet enough. My thumb found the trigger. I got a face full of water. Sputtered. Burst out laughing.

I also put on Spotify's upbeat mix, which helped. Got dressed. Brushed my hair and teeth. My mom is coming to get me around noon to get me out of here for a few hours.

Long-term care is grief and absurdity tangled together. Sometimes the same morning holds both. And sometimes the thing that gets you through isn't a solution — it's a CNA turning a missing toothpaste into a facility-wide incident, or your own thumb betraying you with a squirt bottle.

THE NURSING HOME CONFESSIONAL

Day-to-day nursing home reality is alien territory for most folks. The early days “on the inside” are a particularly disjointed time.

The new “resident” has just come through a medical crisis that spit them out into this strange new land. The psychological vertigo is very real, inviting deep reflection.

Maybe that’s why there can be the phenomenon of a “confessional”

Pneumonia AND sepsis!!

In midst of sending out last update (ĺink below), air got bad here in Albuquerque NM from huge fire. Came down with #pneumonia + #sepsis. In hospital now. 😞
