Last night was rough. I talked to my mom, and we had to face something I've been dreading. My dog Squeaker — a 12-year-old miniature pinscher who's been with me most of his life — may not be able to visit me anymore. I'm in a nursing home, transitioning toward a group home, and most facilities don't allow pets. Even if they did, the last visit we tried didn't go well. He spent most of it whining and pacing, stressed and confused. He couldn't settle until the very end, when he finally laid in my lap for a bit. He has a heart murmur. He's getting old. The visits might be doing more harm than good, and I may have to make the choice to stop them for his sake. That thought breaks my heart.
So I went to bed carrying that. The night felt impossibly long. I slept some, but the awake stretches were heavy.
This morning, two things broke through.
One: my toothpaste disappeared. It's a special unflavored mineral kind I order on Amazon because I can't use mint. Daniel, one of the CNAs, thought another staff member might have confiscated it — which happens sometimes when they don't recognize something and assume I shouldn't have it. So he had people searching the facility for an alternative while he hunted for mine. He found it (someone had stuck it inside a box), but then had to keep telling the search party to stand down as they kept coming down the hall toward my room. We were both laughing.
Two: I was trying to wet my hair for brushing — the only way it cooperates. I had the squirt bottle in one hand and was feeling my hair with the other to check if it was wet enough. My thumb found the trigger. I got a face full of water. Sputtered. Burst out laughing.
I also put on Spotify's upbeat mix, which helped. Got dressed. Brushed my hair and teeth. My mom is coming to get me around noon to get me out of here for a few hours.
Long-term care is grief and absurdity tangled together. Sometimes the same morning holds both. And sometimes the thing that gets you through isn't a solution — it's a CNA turning a missing toothpaste into a facility-wide incident, or your own thumb betraying you with a squirt bottle.

Update: good news. The dietician approved Kate Farms liquid nutrition after three days of asking. I have shakes in my room now as a bridge until the facility's supply arrives. My stomach is calm, my RA pain is nearly gone, and my energy is back. Liquid nutrition works — my body just can't process solid food right now.
Anne, the head of nursing, is now coordinating my appointments and transport. An RN is helping me file a grievance about the three-day delay. My mom doesn't have to keep bringing shakes from home.
To the people who donated today — thank you. You helped fill the gap when the system couldn't. The GoFundMe is still active because the $30 SSI doesn't cover phone, AI tools, or medical costs, but tonight things are better than they were this morning.

Update from the nursing home. My gastroparesis is flaring again and the facility can't provide liquid nutrition. I've been asking since Saturday. The dietician thought I meant broth. The doctor didn't let me explain. They keep bringing me solid food I can't eat.
My mom brought medical food shakes from home that work, but I'm out and she can't keep supplying them. My SSI check this month is $30 because the nursing home takes the rest. That doesn't cover my phone bill, let alone the AI tools I use to function, or medical food if we have to keep buying it ourselves.
If the nursing home can't feed me, my mom may have to pull me out, which could derail the group home placement we've been working toward.

Day-to-day nursing home reality is alien territory for most folks. The early days “on the inside” are a particularly disjointed time.
The new “resident” has just come through a medical crisis that spit them out into this strange new land. The psychological vertigo is very real, inviting deep reflection.

Then he went on a 5 minute weave that included: insults for 2 top democrat leaders; complaints about election being stolen in 2020; discussion how much he dislikes Fox news polls; the success of the operation in Venezuela was; more about polls; ending with saying he’s protecting America from lunatics with nuclear weapons. Early in that cabinet meeting he also spent 3 mins and 27 seconds talking about how Sharpie pens are cheaper and better than the fancier ball point pens used by previous Presidents.
All this while America is at war and the average price of a gallon of gas is bumping up to about $4 / gallon.”

Putting my dad into a nursing home is turning into a way more stressful time than it should be as the Centrelink people have got the details on their assessment wrong and they won't admit it.
Anyone else in #Australia #tasmania had to go through this recently and give me some advice, or just chat?

CW: An Eastgate/Anderson Township (Cincinnati) Ohio nursing home patient died of natural causes — until the coroner called it homicide after daughters persistence in getting his death looked at
Images shows he was strangled to death. The nursing home, hospice, nor funeral home did anything, nor notify the coroner.
The patient called 911 several times leading up to his death.
A daughter documented strangulation marks around her fathers neck, both in days leading up to his death, before being transfer from the abusive nursing home to hospital, and at the funeral home.
The 138-bed nursing home, Forest Hills Healthcare Center, on Moran Road near the Clermont County line, had 83 complaints in the last three years that resulted in only one citation and maintained its above-average quality ratings from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

#PaulWalczak, 55, joined his mother’s nursing home business after dropping out of college, eventually becoming CEO. She sold the company in 2007 & they invested $18M in a new #NursingHome in Florida, where they lived a luxurious lifestyle.
By 2011…Walczak had stopped paying employment #taxes.
2016–2019…he withheld >$10M from paychecks of #nurses, #doctors & others who worked at his facilities under the pretext of using it for their #SocialSecurity, #Medicare & federal income taxes. -
