This was about me adding a node for "Null Island" as a named place (not the Buoy at the same place), given that people actually use that name and specifically visit the place. It has sparked quite some debate about whether that name is "made up", if it's less made up than any other names, etc.

@alan @stamen @ajnn you reminded me of this #nullisland bug I found in some cycling mapping software (it's fixed now)

that's a straight segment of suburban highway running from Victoria, Australia to Null Island, via Kangaroo Island, Western Australia, the Indian Ocean, Madagascar and Africa. No wonder the traffic is so bad 🙂

Last week I wrote a blog post for @stamen about the history of Null Island, the imaginary place where 0º latitude and 0º longitude meet. It has now come to my attention that the NOAA weather station moored at that spot, nicknamed by geographers as the "Null Island Buoy", apparently no longer exists!

In my research into Null Island, I learned that there is a five nautical mile exclusion zone around the point in order to protect the weather buoy located there.

I, too, have a physical manifestation of #NullIsland as a way to classify data errors of large datasets.
I basically divided the world into 4 quadrants and added 5th "quintant", a ± 0.5 degrees extent around (0,0). At first I used the stamen polygon scaled to that dimension, but then thought those are too many nodes, but the concept remains the same.

So based on the intersections I can classify layers into relevancy classes, and possible errors, if they're only NI
