Hiromi Masuoka, 78, recalls when she opened Australia’s first traditional Japanese bathhouse down a narrow Collingwood backstreet in 1998, her friends tried to talk her out of it. “I remember all my friends at the time telling me that it couldn’t work here – that Australians would not cope well with the nudity aspect,” she says.
“But for me that was just completely natural and the only way to keep it really true to the Japanese bathing tradition of purity and cleanliness.”
After 25 years of running Ofuroya with her daughter Mocca, the much-loved inner-Melbourne sanctuary is closing this week, citing the effect of Covid lockdowns, onerous council access regulations on the three-storey property and the cost of needed renovations. “There are many reasons for closing – partly just the costs required to renovate but also that there were so many restrictions and regulations being placed on us here it’s no longer viable,” she says, noting that they didn’t want to sell the business because they couldn’t be sure it would be run in the traditional Japanese style...

The New York Times has chosen the Estonian movie, “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”, as one of the best films of 2023.
Two film critics of the newspaper, Manohla Dargis and Alissa Wilkinson, compiled lists of their favourite movies of this year, and Wilkinson, who’s been writing about movies since 2005, picked “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” as her seventh most liked film of 2023.
“A number of good and much buzzier films from this year – ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ – chronicled women’s journeys toward becoming their own heroes in a world still tilted toward patriarchy. But the Estonian documentary ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’ is the one that’s stuck with me most,” Wilkinson said.
“Women gather in a smoke sauna (we see their tightly framed nude bodies, shot from the neck down, for most of the film) repeatedly throughout a calendar year. They discuss the painful and joyful realities of their lives: fears and hopes, romances and abuses, weaknesses and strengths. Visually striking and uncommonly frank, it gets at an authenticity that few fiction films can fully capture.”...

I am packing my suitcase the night before flying to Oslo for a spa break at The Well when my phone rings. It’s my plus one, Shireen, who doesn’t bother with any preamble: “Mads, are you packing swimming costumes?” I reply in the affirmative, to which she says, “Don’t bother. Look at the website — they are all naked! It is all naked! You are taking me to a naked place!”
I immediately cease folding clothes and look at the website. Shireen isn’t lying; a plethora of photos attest to the mandatory nudity at The Well, with everyone in them looking free and very happy indeed to be completely relieved of clothes. I phone her back for crisis talk. “It’s fine,” she tells me, “we won’t go naked — we’ll just arrange a towel over ourselves and scuttle around with the particulars shielded from view.”
Fixed on our plan of remaining at least semi-clothed, the next day we arrive at The Well after a fifty-minute drive from Oslo airport and are immediately impressed by the setup. Nestled in Nordic forests, it is home to the biggest spa in Northern Europe, and they didn’t just max out on square metre footage but also on the variety of offerings: 11 pools and hot tubs, 25 treatment rooms, 15 saunas and steam rooms, and many other areas in which to recline (nude), have a snack (nude), or go on a forest walk (also nude — I’d strongly advise you to beware of pine needles if you sit on a bench during your stroll)...

Everything feels totally normal, then I look down and remember I am starkers at a naturist B&B.
In front of me is owner Tim Higgs, naked and holding a steaming hot cafetiere in one hand and a tea towel in the other.
Since arriving the previous evening I have never given people quite as much eye contact as I have here in the past 18 hours.
Demand for naturist B&B breaks across England and Scotland has boomed during the summer.
“We’ve been busier than ever,” explains Tim, 67, an ex-farmer and father of four who set up the retreat 12 years ago.
“And we are seeing a lot more younger women booking with us.”

“I’m working on a two-day streak since I last hit someone,” Alex said, beginning to sling the spa towel around his fingers and forearms with the self-assuredness of a Friday pizzaiolo.
“Just kidding,” he added, getting a laugh from our group of 25, most of us sitting cross-legged in bathing suits or bikinis. Finally, the stinger: “It’s actually just a one-day streak. Let’s have a great sweat…and a good time.” He launched the towel into the 170°F air, whipping warm wind into every corner of the subterranean sauna. The terrycloth danced from his knuckles to his elbows, sometimes lurching dangerously close to the foreheads of those in the front row, though never actually lashing someone in the face.
After a bit of posturing, Alex took a handful of snowballs from a platter, and deposited them on the igneous stones piled up across the room’s four stoves. As the ice turned to vapor, he ladled scoops of balsamic essential oils — sage and cypress — into the steam. Celtic music, as promised at the very start of the session, began to crescendo.
I sat back, not knowing what to think — and what a rarity that was, what a relief. Surrounded by flutes and fiddles, drowning in aromatics, sweating with purpose, and watching this talented man prance around like some sort of Saturnalia steward, I felt equal parts overwhelmed and relaxed. All hail aufguss...

Getting naked is the hard part. Everything after that is rather easy.
Leading up to my first Charlotte Nude Yoga class on Oct. 13, I was so preoccupied with the idea of being naked around strangers that I hadn’t actually considered the challenge that physically taking off my clothes would hold.
The first decision involved where I would strip down.
“I usually find myself at the front [of the class],” Huck Broyles told me. It made sense that Broyles would be front and center, as he is the founder of Charlotte Nude Yoga. I, on the other hand, chose a corner where I felt comfortable.
I noticed the barn was warm but not oppressively so; the large fan to my right provided calming white noise along with cool air. Red and yellow curtains covered the windows of Big Love Yoga Barn’s garage door to my left and a dark partition stood in front of the door next to it.
The dimmed lights accentuated the swirl of neon covering all four walls, the “You are love, share love” sign on the front wall offset by the intricate circle focal point.
Broyles said he tries to get to classes early to set up and strip nude for incoming participants. He’s found that doing such eases the awkwardness and encourages newcomers to reach the comfort level to undress...

The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia and the Catalan Naturist Club have programmed a very special visit to the exhibition The Riace bronzes on October 28. The exhibition displays large-format photographs by the artist Luigi Spina in which two naked statues from the 5th century B.C feature. The idea behind the experience, as stated on the museum’s website, is that visitors can somehow see themselves reflected in the work in “the same situation as they are, completely naked and surrounded by other bodies.”
Art historian, actress, and playwright Irene Vicente Salas is the exhibition’s guide. Last summer, Vicente staged the temporary art exhibition Corpus at the National Art Museum of Catalonia, a montage that brought dance, circus, and music to the museum and even served as an excuse to analyze some of the works. “From there I was asked by the Catalan Naturist Club if it would be possible to do a naked guided tour of the exhibition. I looked into it, and it seemed like a wonderful experience,” he says...

The Mattress Factory museum on the North Side is hosting a Pittsburgh Area Naturists nude art tour on Friday Nov. 10. A series of 90-minute tours in the buff begins at 6:30 p.m.
"Whether you're an art enthusiast or simply curious about pushing boundaries, the nude art tour at the Mattress Factory Museum promises to be an unforgettable experience," the naturists group stated in an online post. "Don't miss out on this opportunity to engage with daring and thought-provoking artworks that challenge societal norms."

The bills, if passed, would be immensely harmful to naturists,
and would set a very dangerous precedent for other states.
Background
The 13th annual World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in Madison was, by all measures, a success. Among the nearly 200 who participated this year was a 10 year old girl and her mother. The mother saw it as an opportunity to teach her daughter valuable lessons -- not just about body positivity but also self-empowerment, giving her the option to dress however she chose. The young girl chose to participate nude just like everyone else, a choice respected and supported by her mother and, indeed, aligned with the event's clothing-optional policy.
Yet the girl's presence, entirely unremarkable in the international scope of World Naked Bike Rides, has nonetheless ignited a moralistic media controversy that has escalated to the national level. In the latest development of the continuing saga, proposed measures now aim to redefine public decency laws in Wisconsin, sparking a national debate that could jeopardize far more than just WNBR....

The former chief executive and president of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, New Jersey, has filed a lawsuit alleging “malicious and unlawful termination” of his role over a nude art event.
Richard Freeman, who worked with the institution for nine years, claims he was let go and told he had “intentionally violat[ed] the Hospital sexual harassment policy” for his failure to “intervene and stop a living art body painting exhibition”, according to court papers filed late last month.
The event in question was entitled Under the Italian Sky and took place as part of a fundraiser in June this year at Glenmoore Farm in Hopewell, New Jersey. The event was described as an “immersive evening of Italian cultural pursuits” and organised to raise money to fight cancer, with more than 250 guests attending.
Freeman is not thought to have been involved in the planning or direct authorisation of the display and argues that “more than 40 people—whether affiliated with the hospital, its foundation or [its parent organisation] RWJBarnabas Health—were involved in the planning and approval process”.

A naturist group is organising nude social events such as festivals and volleyball for young people to encourage them to get their kit off.
Young British Naturism, a group for 18 to 35-year-olds, is also arranging trips abroad to places like naked-friendly spas in Germany.
Jon Ward, leader of the organisation, an offshoot of British Naturism, said: “The future of British Naturism is dependent on members who are part of Young British Naturism today.
“Naturism is often thought of as something for people in the older age bracket – but we want to encourage people to take part regardless of the age range of the wider group.
“We really need to make sure our younger members feel engaged. YBN gives people an opportunity to spend time with someone who is of a similar age.

The clothing-optional beach at Hanlan’s Point has been expanded from Gibraltar Point to Billy Bishop Airport, and officially recognized by the city as a historically queer space, in a move that is being applauded by members of the city’s LGBTQ+ community and those who helped enshrine the right to swim and sunbathe nude on the Toronto Islands.
“I think it’s fantastic. I think it’s about time,” said Stéphane Deschênes, a naturist and former University of Toronto lecturer who helped lead the fight to have Hanlan’s declared clothing-optional in 1999.
Deschênes taught a course at U of T on public nudity, history, law and science, and, together with his wife, owns and operates the Bare Oaks Family Naturist Park near Newmarket.
“Every other beach, and in fact, every other square foot of public space in Toronto, you have to wear clothes,” said Deschênes, who added that the expansion might not be enough. “Based on how busy it has been, clearly we needed to expand it, because it was getting very jammed up on weekends.”...

When Lizard came to Wreck Beach for the first time in 1970, he wanted to walk into the water and swim 'til he sank.
Instead, he stopped and watched the other bathers take off worries with their clothes and decided this place might be worth coming back to. Thirty-three years later, he sits on a wicker beach chair in mirrored shades and introduces me to his buddies. They’re deep in conversation, cursing each other out and reminiscing about fights with a friend who’s now gone.
To my right, a man sunbathes in the nude and tells me he’s been coming here for years. He points out his son playing in the water and says caring for a blind kid with autism isn’t always easy, but they always agree on the beach.
As Vancouver’s only official clothing-optional beach (and the most popular one in Canada), Ts'at'lhm, or Wreck Beach, is the place to be if you want to get away from that Vancouver freeze. With so many hippies and nudists in one place, there’s a sense of community that’s hard to miss, but not too unfamiliar to anyone who’s spent some time in BC’s small town draft-dodger colonies.
Apostate hippie kid that I am, this dynamic intrigues me — I amble down the stairs, don my sunscreen and drop my pants for a quick dip to get in the spirit of things. Then, after reclaiming my clothes, I introduce myself to anyone who seems friendly and interesting. I’m hoping to find some Wreck regulars, pick their brains on the beach’s culture and community and get their opinions on the city’s handling of this increasingly popular attraction...

INDIANAPOLIS — Well over 200 organizations had booths in the exhibit hall at the recent meeting of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). Government associations, nonprofits and private companies were all there, offering a wide range of perspectives and resources.
It might seem incongruous for the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR), to exhibit at such an event, but they’ve had a booth every year since the early 1990s. AANR doesn’t come to promote nudism, but to help lawmakers understand the ways that laws intended to curb illicit activity can inadvertently affect legitimate, family-friendly businesses.
Erich Schuttauf, AANR’s executive director and legal counsel, recognizes that nudism is not for everyone. But it’s a bigger industry than most people realize, encompassing clubs, resorts and even cruises.
The sector is especially strong in the Sun Belt, bringing an estimated $4 billion in direct revenue each year to Florida alone. The total economic impact from nudist visitors is believed to be well over $7 billion.
The most oppressive regulation passed since AANR’s formation in 1931, says Schuttauf, was an Arkansas bill passed in 1958 that restricted advocacy for nudism. It hasn’t been enforced for years, but he's hoping to see it dropped off the books, nonetheless...

French police barred the naked peloton in one of its stages and arrested the president of the France's Nudism Movement

Seven stages of the so-called “nude Tour de France” were banned for public indecency in restrictions which climate activists said was “state intimidation”.
The cyclists are taking part in the World Naked Bike Ride, an annual event launched in 2004 in London and which last year crossed the capital without raising eyebrows. However, since the tour kicked off in Nantes, western France, on Aug 8, local authorities have prohibited seven stages by decree.
Those blocking the tour have cited the penal code that “equates nudism to sexual exhibitionism on the public causeway,” said François Feunteun, president of Le Mouvement Naturiste (The Nudism Movement), which is organising the ride. Public indecency is punishable by up to a year in prison and a €15,000 (£12,800) fine in France...
