Hiromi Masuoka, 78, recalls when she opened Australia’s first traditional Japanese bathhouse down a narrow Collingwood backstreet in 1998, her friends tried to talk her out of it. “I remember all my friends at the time telling me that it couldn’t work here – that Australians would not cope well with the nudity aspect,” she says.
“But for me that was just completely natural and the only way to keep it really true to the Japanese bathing tradition of purity and cleanliness.”
After 25 years of running Ofuroya with her daughter Mocca, the much-loved inner-Melbourne sanctuary is closing this week, citing the effect of Covid lockdowns, onerous council access regulations on the three-storey property and the cost of needed renovations. “There are many reasons for closing – partly just the costs required to renovate but also that there were so many restrictions and regulations being placed on us here it’s no longer viable,” she says, noting that they didn’t want to sell the business because they couldn’t be sure it would be run in the traditional Japanese style...

**Gavdos: The European island known for nudity**

Marooned in the Mediterranean, this tiny Greek island has been a bohemian destination since the 1960s. But can its anything-goes culture survive?
I spent my last day on the Greek island of Gavdos at Sarakiniko, its largest and most popular beach. But when I arrived, a new wooden sign dug deep in the golden sand warned me: nudity was now prohibited.
Situated in the middle of the Libyan Sea 79km south of Crete, Gavdos is the southernmost point in Europe and, until recently, one of the only places in Greece where you were free to swim nude and sunbathe naked. According to a 1983 Greek law that was never revised, nudism in Greece is only officially allowed at nudist resorts, and while unofficial nude beaches can be found elsewhere in Greece, nowhere else in the country is there a stronger clothing-optional culture than here, where authorities have traditionally looked the other way.
"The freedom Gavdos offers, you can't find it anywhere else," said Vasilis Tzounaras, the former owner of Gavdos FM, the island's only radio station, who moved to the island about 20 years ago from Crete. "[I'll] probably stay here for the rest of my life. I never thought I'd see something like this on the island," he said, referring to the recent ban on nudity.
In July 2023, the mayor's office posted the signs at Sarakiniko, sparking controversy and protests among locals and tourists, most of whom live on or visit Gavdos because of its historical anything-goes attitude. Situated in the middle of the Libyan Sea 79km south of Crete, Gavdos is the southernmost point in Europe and, until recently, one of the only places in Greece where you were free to swim nude and sunbathe naked. According to a 1983 Greek law that was never revised, nudism in Greece is only officially allowed at nudist resorts, and while unofficial nude beaches can be found elsewhere in Greece, nowhere else in the country is there a stronger clothing-optional culture than here, where authorities have traditionally looked the other way.

Previously only possible in France and Spain, now a museum in Germany is also opening its doors to naked visitors. On 27 January 2024, the LWL Museum of Art and Culture in Münster (Westphalia) is inviting visitors to visit the "Nudes" exhibition without clothes on the initiative of the initiators of the Westphalian Nude Hiking Days.
The initiators state the following:
"The nude fascinates, it outrages, it excites and it has always inspired. It is one of the oldest motifs in art. The unclothed body offers almost inexhaustible possibilities for depicting people's view of themselves, their ideals, fears and dreams. We also experience this directly on our own bodies at our joint events. The nude and being naked is a form of representation that is constantly reinventing itself in order to thematise social, political and aesthetic issues. Everyone is invited to this exhibition, whether young or old, fat or thin, female, male or diverse, who has become curious. If you are interested and would like to give it a try, but are a little shy, feel free to accompany us in your clothes. We naked people are tolerant. You are cordially invited to join our community. The New York Times has chosen the Estonian movie, “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”, as one of the best films of 2023.
Two film critics of the newspaper, Manohla Dargis and Alissa Wilkinson, compiled lists of their favourite movies of this year, and Wilkinson, who’s been writing about movies since 2005, picked “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” as her seventh most liked film of 2023.
“A number of good and much buzzier films from this year – ‘Barbie’, ‘Poor Things’ – chronicled women’s journeys toward becoming their own heroes in a world still tilted toward patriarchy. But the Estonian documentary ‘Smoke Sauna Sisterhood’ is the one that’s stuck with me most,” Wilkinson said.
“Women gather in a smoke sauna (we see their tightly framed nude bodies, shot from the neck down, for most of the film) repeatedly throughout a calendar year. They discuss the painful and joyful realities of their lives: fears and hopes, romances and abuses, weaknesses and strengths. The New York Times has chosen the Estonian movie, “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood”, as one of the best films of 2023.
Two film critics of the newspaper, Manohla Dargis and Alissa Wilkinson, compiled lists of their favourite movies of this year, and Wilkinson, who’s been writing about movies since 2005, picked “Smoke Sauna Sisterhood” as her seventh most liked film of 2023.

According to the ticketing website Simple Tix, the World Naked Bike Ride, an international “clothing-optional” event, is coming to San Antonio this summer. The website says it will take place between June 15 through June 30 and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. Hotel management was not immediately available Sunday to comment on the posting.
Created in 2004, the free event invites people to protest fossil fuels and promote body positivity, according to its website. The nudity represents the vulnerability of bikers in urban settings, the group says.

A modest prefabricated hut that sat almost forgotten in suburban Kent for more than half a century is at the centre of an international preservation campaign, after it was recognised as a “hugely important” piece of sporting history – and Britain’s oldest operating sauna.
Finland’s ambassador to the UK is leading a campaign to gain listed status for the fragile wooden sauna, which is an extremely rare survivor of the 1948 “austerity” Olympics, hosted on a shoestring in London three years after the end of the second world war.
Ambassador Jukka Siukosaari was alerted to its existence by the Finnish Olympic committee, which had in turn been contacted by sauna enthusiasts from Aylesford, near Maidstone.
They had been quietly enjoying the sauna’s charms for many years until it failed a safety inspection in 2020, leaving them unable to afford repairs and forcing them to mothball the building.
Historic England is now considering an application to grant listed status to the structure, which is almost unaltered since it was built and retains its original sauna benches, panelled changing rooms and massage tables...

Finland’s ambassador to the UK is leading a campaign to gain listed status for the fragile wooden sauna, which is an extremely rare survivor of the 1948 “austerity” Olympics, hosted on a shoestring in London three years after the end of the second world war.
Ambassador Jukka Siukosaari was alerted to its existence by the Finnish Olympic committee, which had in turn been contacted by sauna enthusiasts from Aylesford, near Maidstone.
They had been quietly enjoying the sauna’s charms for many years until it failed a safety inspection in 2020, leaving them unable to afford repairs and forcing them to mothball the building.
Historic England is now considering an application to grant listed status to the structure, which is almost unaltered since it was built and retains its original sauna benches, panelled changing rooms and massage tables...
