#Trump has undermined the agency tasked with making sure America never has another #nuclear meltdown

"The federal regulatory agency tasked with keeping America’s #NuclearPower plants safe and running smoothly is set to make huge cuts to the amount of time its staffers spend on #safety and emergency #inspections, opening the door to more self-policing from the industry.

"As it embarks on a reorganization to fulfill executive orders from President Donald Trump, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission [#NRC] is proposing to dramatically reduce its inspection hours for existing #NuclearPowerPlants, cutting back on the amount of time independent inspectors look for plants’ security procedures, #radiation protection for staff, #maintenance and safety.

"The NRC has been a crucial part of keeping America’s nuclear energy operating for the past 40 years — and experts say its authority is only more necessary than ever as the Trump administration seeks to usher in a new golden age of nuclear energy. But Trump wants to streamline the agency, and staff cuts combined with executive orders are troubling signs that Trump is undoing the NRC’s independence, experts said."

#RedWing Police Respond After #NuclearPowerPlant Reports #Drones

#RedWingMinnesota (KROC-AM News) - "A southeastern Minnesota law enforcement agency is reporting an encounter with mysterious drones.

"A news release issued Thursday afternoon by the Red Wing Police Department indicates Goodhue County Sheriff's Office dispatchers received a report around 6:30 PM Wednesday from the #PrairieIslandNuclearPowerPlant. The report indicated four to five drones had been seen flying around the area of the #XcelEnergy facility.

"The news release says Red Wing Police and officers from the #PrairieIsland #TribalPolice Department responded to the report and observed two drones flying around the power plant and the nearby Lock and #Dam3 on the #MississippiRiver. It states that the officers monitored the drones until they were no longer seen in the area."

Dayton Daily News investigation found #contamination, sick workers at #PiketonOhio plant

"A polluted former #UraniumEnrichment plant in #Piketon closed years ago but it's impact continues to resonate through the community, including this week when a #MiddleSchool was closed after traces of radioactive #neptunium were found at an air monitoring station at the school.

"Contamination with radiation and multiple toxic substances at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant led to an ongoing, multibillion dollar environmental cleanup and sickened plant workers who had to fight for compensation as they battled debilitating terminal illnesses related to their years at the plant.

"A massive 2006 investigation by the Dayton Daily News found five plumes of poisoned #groundwater, contamination with radiation, #beryllium, polychlorinated biphenyls (#PCBs) and #asbestos.

"The investigation found lax safety practices, routine mishandling of toxic and #radioactive material and at least 400 accidental releases of #UraniumGas or toxic fluorine. Toxins were dumped into unlined #landfills and ditches and leached into #groundwater and the Little #BeaverCreek, a tributary of the #SciotoRiver.

"The plant was operated by the federal government and contractors from 1954 to 2001 and enriched uranium to high levels for #NuclearWeapons and #NuclearSubmarines and to lower levels for #nuclearpowerplants.

Climate change increasingly threatens research laboratories, weapons sites and power plants across the nation that handle or are contaminated with #radioactive material or perform critical energy and defense research.

"The Nuclear Regulatory Commission [#NRC] considers only historical #ClimateData rather than future projections in licensing decisions and oversight of #NuclearPowerPlants, according to a General Accounting Office study in April that recommended the NRC 'fully consider potential #ClimateChange effects.' The GAO found that 60 of 75 U.S. plants were in areas with high flood hazard and 16 were in areas with high wildfire potential."
