  1. How To Prevent Nuclear War: Prepare To Win It

A provocative title going against the grain of Common Wisdom, but Common Wisdom has been going nowhere good as far as nuclear war is concerned. Uncommon wisdom is what we embrace, and obviously where the solution lays because clearly the alternatives, MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction and pacifist unilateral disarment failed.

Abstract: The traditional doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) assumes that peace rests upon universal vulnerability. This essay argues instead that genuine peace requires making nuclear aggression militarily ineffective

Popular nuclear-war scenarios oversimplify political decision-making and neglect the strategic importance of the world’s other nuclear powers beyond the United States and Russia.

The author contends that modern anti-ballistic missile systems already demonstrate high interception rates and that continued technological progress could render large-scale nuclear attacks largely ineffective and cost prohibitive.

Coupled with hardened infrastructure and greatly expanded, cheaper mass industrial interceptor production, such defenses would shift deterrence from mutual destruction toward active protection. Although offensive systems will continue evolving, there is only so much which they can do, whereas defensive systems capabilities will become nearly infinite when directed energy weapons (lasers!) achieve higher performances (soon). A sufficiently strong defensive shield would discourage nuclear blackmail and reduce the likelihood of deliberate escalation.

In this view, preparing to defeat nuclear attacks is not a path toward war but a practical strategy for preserving peace by making nuclear coercion an increasingly irrational and self-defeating choice.

    ***

    Nuclear War Fable:

In the well documented, and initially gripping book “Nuclear War A Scenario” journalist Annie Jacobsen describes a nuclear decapitation strike, a “bolt out of the blue” a one megaton bomb exploding over the Pentagon. The mad king in Korea unleashed a nuclear attack on Washington DC and the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant.

Putin, full of anger at not being consulted before a counterstrike on North Korea, and misunderstanding it for an attack on Russia, unleashes in turn a massive strike on the USA… Which counterstrikes.

To advance her plot, Jacobsen uses highly unlikely events, such as Marine One helicopter not taking off for long minutes, while a nuclear warhead is known to be incoming, because, Jacobsen relates, officials are fiercely arguing about parachutes for everybody. In truth, if a warhead was heading toward the Pentagon, the US president would be shoved into the helicopter with not a single second wasted. Also she makes the US fire a volley of ballistic missiles over Russia to get at North Korea. Such a volley fired from a field like Malmstrom AFB, Montana is roughly northwest (around 318° azimuth), and using the great-circle vertex formula, the path’s highest latitude comes out to about 63°N before it curves back south toward Korea. That puts the track over:

    • Western Canada and the Canadian Arctic Then the Bering Strait / far western Alaska
    • Followed by Russian territory around Magadan Oblast (Russia’s Far East, north of Kamchatka), descending southward, heading down toward the Sea of Japan and Korea.

     .

All this is happening on the Pacific fringe, far from Europe.

That Putin would unleash an attack on the USA, after witnessing an attack on the USA, without being sure Russia is attacked makes absolutely no sense: hiding behind his bluster, Putin has shown to be a very rational and cautious actor. Invading Ukraine became a huge mistake only after eight years of slow invasion and because Putin was lied to by his own generals.

If Putin unleashed a massive attack on warning, Putin would be only sure that Russia would be completely destroyed, and every Russian officer knows this. If he does not unleash, but waits to make sure, Russia has a chance. This is all the more true, because most of the 1772 Russian nuclear bombs at-the-ready are mobile… So a first strike can’t get at them..

    ***

Another thing which makes no sense is that the nuclear forces at the ready of China, France, UK, India, Pakistan and Israel are about as great as those of Russia or the US… And so must be taken into account. Putin himself said that French and British nuclear forces had to be taken into account.

In Jacobsen’s scenario, Paris and London are obliterated by the Russians, but together, France and Britain have 8 strategic nuclear subs (the US has 14). Attacking France and Britain would roughly augment Russia’s strategic opposition by 50% for no good reason.

In case of an all-out war between the USA on one side and Russia, and North Korea, on the other, the remaining six nuclear weapons powers would rule the world… Except of course if they were attacked, but attacking them would divert enormous resources, preventing all-out war between the USA and Russia-North Korea.

    ***

Well, book writers must sell their books and oriented, unrealistic fables sell best. In the precise scenario deployed by Jacobsen, Putin would never all-out attack the way she describes it. He would wait and see.

    ***

So what about a realistic scenario?

An all-out attack of North Korea on South Korea and the USA is imaginable if somehow the entourage of the tyrant Kim was ready to die with him. And if Kim feared a coup. As it is he is the son of a Japanese immigrant, and not some sort of noble Korean lineage. So, plausibly, he could fear some retribution. Jang Song-thaek, Kim Jong-un’s mentor and uncle by marriage,  was executed in 2013. An unverified newspaper reported that the uncle was eaten by dogs while conscious. The story may be false. However what is clear is that Jang Song-thaek’s direct relatives were killed, including his sister, brother-in-law, a nephew, and other family members; some reports said even children and grandchildren were included…

If Kim, his daughter and his sister feel that they are next on the canine menu, they may well prefer nuclear war from inside the bunker located 1900 feet deep into the sacred volcano…

    ***

Putin has been playing nuclear brinkmanship to intimidate his adversaries, while Xi has made clear that nuclear threats are unacceptable and should not be used to settle conflicts. The answer of the West has been to slowly increase the temperature in the hope that Russia and Putin will reach ebullition without noticing.

I believe that there is a danger that Putin will use nukes in a sickle thrust, if desperate enough.

But that would not be an all-out nuclear war. .

    At least not right away.

    ***

Scenarios involving slow escalation exist, especially if China made the error of siding with Putin in direct war, and attacked in the South China Sea or Taiwan, to try to exploit the West’s dwindling ammunition stores…

    ***.

Also, in the future one could imagine a Chinese leader, or the leader of another non-democratic nuclear armed country trying to escape death from a coup with the distraction of nuclear war. So how to escape nuclear war?

    ***

HOW TO WIN NUCLEAR WAR: ANTI BALLISTIC MISSILE MISSILES

In the Jacobsen Nuclear War scenario, it is recognized that the US destroyers and cruisers equipped with the appropriate missiles achieved 85% interception success against ballistic missiles. In the book they are simply not deployed to protect the USA.

If two such missiles were fired at each incoming warhead, one could expect only 2% of the warheads to get through… And that was with tech of a few years ago, say 2022.

Anti-missile tech can be vastly improved. For example the US Patriot 3 hits the incoming missile with direct interception. It’s like hitting a bullet with a bullet. Each missile costs around 4 millions.

The French Aster 30 NG, accelerates faster laterally and moreover is equipped with a directional warhead, so it does not need to touch the other missile. Even the older version of that missile was launched individually, because of its higher kill probability.

That French tech could easily be emulated in Trump’s Golden Dome.

If 99% of the incoming missiles are intercepted, nuclear war can certainly be won. The 99% can be achieved with existing tech.

France, in cooperation with Ukraine will test bed the Aster 30 New Generation in real combat in Ukraine (a method, testing in combat, ironically enough advocated by Vladimir Putin himself!)

New tech interceptor systems with better AI will be able to achieve better than 99%.

With careful planning, evacuation and hardening of cities, the USA, a continent sized country, would certainly be able to ride a scenario even with two dozen nuclear explosions (which would be a worst-case scenario if several thousands interceptors are deployed).

Some other measures, for example against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) could be taken to harden countries such as France and the USA.

    ***

So France and the USA need to.. Rearm. As it is, the USA intends to produce 600 Patriot 3 a year. It takes two years to make one missile. And France intends to boost Aster 30’s production to 300. The need of Ukraine on a single 2026 summer night is often more than 50 Patriot 3 and, or Aster 30…  The need is for a production at least ten times greater.

If the leading Nuclear Defense Industrial Base of the Empire Of Democracy, namely France and the USA, become so capable that they can win a nuclear war, worldwide nuclear peace will be easier to achieve… Other nuclear armed powers would be hesitant to wage war, as then they would be easy picking…

Nuclear winter is not a scenario here, because nukes would be destroyed in flight (fall-out would be no worse than in the early 1960s…).

    ***

I advocated to proceed with Dictatorship Assured Destruction (DAD). The basic argument is that Earth has become a house and maniacs with nukes in the room next door is not an option with a future. Obviously while total war can be effective with Iran as it is in 2026, it is out of the question with nuclear weapons tyrannies. So the trick has been, with Russia, to try to raise the temperature toward a slow boil so the stupid frog doesn’t understand what is going on.

So the preceding, what Trump calls the “Golden Dome” and was called “Star Wars” under Reagan, is a long term tech solution. But we need to avoid nuclear war everyday, in the next two hours. So guile and wickedness, what is called diplomacy, ought, in the meantime, while the Empire Of Democracy rearms, be used to gain time. This was intuitively accomplished when the Kremlin tyrant made his nuclear threats. Western leaders tried to pose as the crazed tyrant’s friends and intermediaries. Macron was keen to talk, Trump was Putin’s self proclaimed friend, Bush “read into his soul”, and Obama “reset”..

So guile must be used and dictators must be entertained… To some extent.

Meanwhile, military pressure must be kept on… Lest the 2020s turn into the equivalent of the 1930s Axis, the unholy opportunistic alliance of miscreants. Venezuela was put under control, Iran is undergoing domestication, and the military NATO pressure on Russia keeps going up, inciting Kim and Xi to contemplate restraint..

    ***

Long term, the best way to prevent nuclear war is not by relying on mutual vulnerability, but by making nuclear aggression militarily futile through overwhelming defensive capability. Indeed MAD assumes actors to be rational and morally superior, not stupid, cruel, vicious and domineering with nothing to lose as most tyrants tend to be. Moreover, as technology provides tyrants with ever more means, their sort is on the increase.

So the technical race into better nuclear fighting capability is a civilization savior, prudent, most just, and a wisdom promoter. What is there not to like? All the good fallout from more advanced AI inside the anti-ballistic missiles?

  6. At what age should I not take potassium iodide anymore in case of a nuclear disaster (or Putin drops a specific type of bomb)? In my country of origin, and the US for example, they do not provide it for people over 40, but in Germany it is over 45. I have Hashimoto's which increases the risk of thyroid cancer (16-fold IIRC) in case that matters.

  15. Putin Allies Float Nuclear War Scenario Amid US Crisis Wishcasting

As smoke from Ukrainian drone attacks filled the air, Putin's allies gathered at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum to discuss a chilling scenario: nuclear war. The meeting, attended by Russian oligarchs, far-right European groups, and even some US officials, couldn't have come at a more ominous time.

  22. Nuclear war is horrible and I hope it never happens. Yet, there are only a few countries that actually have nuclear weapons and the power to use them is concentrated in just a few individuals. This means the vast majority of the global population has no say on the question if nuclear weapons will be used.

However, due to a potential nuclear winter, which could follow a nuclear war, even countries on the other side of the globe could be directly affected by a nuclear war. This impact could be quite severe and as they have no direct measure to prevent it, these countries should think about how they would prepare. Also, many of the preparations that would be helpful for a nuclear winter would also help for the climatic consequences of large volcanic eruptions or asteroid impacts. So, they should be done anyway.

This is the gist of the argument I made in a new article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. You can read the full article here: thebulletin.org/2026/05/how-nu

Threads (1984), the entire film here: m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfd0pq-S

Trigger warning for everything! Everything! But too important, so it would be good if you managed to watch it.

When Ukraine was attacked, and that drone from Ukraine crashed in the city I lived in at the time, 1000 km away from Ukraine, in a NATO member mind you, I stocked up on iodine tablets and everything I needed to survive for a week in my teeny tiny storage space in the basement of my building. I was determined to survive the possible nuclear war against NATO states just like I was determined to survive COVID. As a child I had survived both a war, and a nuclear family, so I wasn't afraid of a nuclear war.

I watched Threads yesterday and realised surviving a nuclear war is way worse than not surviving it, and not only because of the disability, radiation, and nuclear winter, but also (and mostly) because of other humans, because of how the society falls apart! I am not afraid of a nuclear war (I have been through so much shit in my life I do not feel fear anymore) but if it happens, I hope I die quickly from the blast itself.
