  2. Asked about a report, which contemplates the #US not selling any #nuclearsubmarines to #Australia – as promised under #AUKUS, #Marles says there will be “a whole lot of commentary” on AUKUS.

    Marles said:

“We’re working with the #TrumpRegime, & we’ve heard #Trump make clear the position of the #UnitedStates in respect of this question, & he has said that we are full steam ahead in respect of this & it includes the transfer of the Virginia [class submarines].”

  3. As a follow-up to the #murder of #AlexPretti wouldn’t it be about time that we Australians broke off the AUKUS deal and wound back what ties we have to the #dysfunctional #crazy #racist #UnitedStates?

If we really need human crewed #NuclearSubmarines, and I suspect we don’t, it would be a good move to try and get back on side with the French who could build our subs for us.

Of course we would need to build a #nuclear #reactor to produce the fuel needed, or failing that we should arrange for the #French or even the #British to refuel our subs for us when the fuel rods need replacing.

Or maybe we should concentrate on #unmanned nuclear power #drone submarines capable of working at ridiculous depths and loitering on the bottom for years, ready to kill any threatening ship or submarine when needed.

The technology is available; perhaps we could lead the world in producing our own version of such a monstrous machine. Again, we could rely on our friendly allies to refuel them for us for a price.

    #ScottMorrison was a lying idiot.

  4. Does Europe need more nuclear-powered submarines?

A nuclear submarine is a sensitive technology that is currently used by only six countries: France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia, China, and India.

A defence expert weighs in on whether Europe needs more nuclear-powered submarines amid growing tensions with Russia.

  5. South Korea's nuclear submarine gamble raises prospect of underwater arms race in Asia

South Korea's pursuit of nuclear-powered submarines is gaining traction following President Donald Trump's endorsement, ending decades of U.S. resistance in a move that could reshape Asia's security landscape and escalate an underwater arms race.

  6. The effect of #ClimateChange on sources of #radionuclides to the #MarineEnvironment

    Published: 16 March 2024
Justin P. Gwynn, Vanessa Hatje, Núria Casacuberta, Manmohan Sarin & Iolanda Osvath

    Abstract:
"Climate change interacts with the sources and cycling of contaminants, such as radionuclides, in the environment. In this review, we discuss the implications of climate change impacts on existing and potential future sources of radionuclides associated with human activities to the marine environment. The overall effect on operational releases of radionuclides from the nuclear and non-nuclear sectors will likely be increased interference or prevention of normal operations due to weather-related events. For certain #RadioactiveWaste dumped at sea and sunken #NuclearSubmarines, the impact of climate change and ocean #acidification on the release of radionuclides and their subsequent fate in the marine environment should be considered further. Fluxes from secondary sources of radionuclides in the marine and terrestrial environment and cryosphere will change in response to climate change impacts such as sea level rise, warming and changes in precipitation patterns. In addition, climate change impacts may increase the risk of releases of radionuclides from operational and legacy wastes on land to the marine environment. Overall, our synthesis highlights that there is a need to understand and assess climate change impacts on sources of radionuclides to the marine environment to meet environmental and management challenges under future climate scenarios."

  14. Dayton Daily News investigation found #contamination, sick workers at #PiketonOhio plant

    By Lynn Hulsey
    May 15, 2019

"A polluted former #UraniumEnrichment plant in #Piketon closed years ago but it's impact continues to resonate through the community, including this week when a #MiddleSchool was closed after traces of radioactive #neptunium were found at an air monitoring station at the school.

"Contamination with radiation and multiple toxic substances at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant led to an ongoing, multibillion dollar environmental cleanup and sickened plant workers who had to fight for compensation as they battled debilitating terminal illnesses related to their years at the plant.

"A massive 2006 investigation by the Dayton Daily News found five plumes of poisoned #groundwater, contamination with radiation, #beryllium, polychlorinated biphenyls (#PCBs) and #asbestos.

"The investigation found lax safety practices, routine mishandling of toxic and #radioactive material and at least 400 accidental releases of #UraniumGas or toxic fluorine. Toxins were dumped into unlined #landfills and ditches and leached into #groundwater and the Little #BeaverCreek, a tributary of the #SciotoRiver.

"The plant was operated by the federal government and contractors from 1954 to 2001 and enriched uranium to high levels for #NuclearWeapons and #NuclearSubmarines and to lower levels for #nuclearpowerplants.
