On the Cross-hairs of this Israeli OSINT firm: Gays and Protesters

Leaked documents revealing that #CyberGlobes, a small #OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) firm based at the National Cyber Park in Beer Sheva, #Israel, helped authoritarian regimes collect intelligence on activists, dissidents, political opponents, and #LGBTQ+ individuals - without hacking any device, purely based on publicly available social media data.
Client list include Saudi Arabia, UAE, Morocco, Angola, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the US, Norway, Finland, Japan, Netherlands, and Poland.

Nigeria: CyberGlobes analyst Mark Leiba ran searches on participants in Nigeria's August 2024 protests against high cost of living (where 24+ were killed and 1,200+ arrested).

Indonesia: The company helped Indonesian government officials identify and map LGBTQ+ community members, suggesting search keywords like "gay, drag queen, BDSM" and advising them to analyze the Facebook profiles of LGBTQ+ activists. In Indonesia, such individuals face arrest and public caning.

Mozambique: After disputed 2024 elections sparked mass protests (315+ killed), CyberGlobes ran facial recognition and darknet breach searches on opposition leader Vitano Singano (later kidnapped in July 2025, fate unknown).

Rwanda & Kuwait: Tracked dissident bloggers - "Robert Gakwerere" (anti-Kagame) and Fawaz al-Khuraiti (anti-Kuwaiti government). The latter lost his citizenship mid-2025.

Aryeh Lightstone (#Trump advisor): CyberGlobes searched his personal email addresses and attempted to retrieve his private passwords from darknet breach databases.

Environmental activists: Tracked Extinction Rebellion (Czech Republic), Greenpeace Slovenia, and nuclear regulators in the US and Canada.

NSO Group partnership: CyberGlobes previously worked alongside #NSO (maker of Pegasus spyware) in combined sales - "Before you hack someone's phone, you need to know whose phone to hack."

Fake accounts: The company maintained a system of fake personas/avatars to infiltrate closed Facebook groups, and purchased data from third-party sources.

"More than a dozen students and opposition members in Serbia have been targeted with spyware since the start of the year in the largest documented wave of such surveillance in the eastern European country. 

In at least one case, authenticated by digital investigators in Canada, a student activist’s phone was infected remotely with Pegasus spyware developed by the Israeli company NSO. In another case, a domestically produced surveillance software known as NoviSpy was allegedly installed on the target’s device while the person was held in police custody.

The latest revelations about the use of spyware against Serbian opposition figures and activists come as strongman President Aleksandar Vučić prepares to hold highly-charged parliamentary elections in October, when Serbia’s powerful student protest movement is expected to pose the biggest threat to the ruling party’s grip on power. 

Journalists, activists and civil society members have been targeted with surveillance technologies in the past, but the new cases represent the most widespread use of spyware in Serbia identified to date, according to the Serbian human rights group SHARE Foundation, which has documented 14 cases this year."

Toronto-based Citizen Lab, which has so far analysed one of those cases, said that the device had been infected with Pegasus via a “zero-click exploit” in Apple’s iMessage, meaning the spyware was installed without the target clicking a link or taking any other action. Apple’s latest software updates were believed to have patched the vulnerability, Citizen Lab added. The other 11 cases are still being analysed.

“This fresh wave of Apple Threat Notifications reveal that Serbia’s peaceful pro-democracy movement is being aggressively targeted with mercenary spyware ahead of key 2026 election cycles,” said Citizen Lab’s John Scott-Railton.

The Serbian presidency and NSO have both been approached for comment.
Ognjen Rašić, a 21-year-old communications student at the University of Niš received an Apple notification on August 13. It was a “strange feeling” to know that someone had used multimillion-dollar spyware to scrape information from his phone, he told the FT.
