My university uses #Geoblocking of known evil countries.
#Geoblocking is a very sensible and appropriate security measure, as it ensures that
only those with evil and hostile intentions get to your sites -
because for those, geoblocking is easy to circumvent -while all normal naive believers in global connectivity - such as scientists, academics, students - are left out.
I commend the use of #geoblock

Very happy to be working with my friends and colleagues in #Nepal again.
Our oldest memories go back nearly 20 years, when we deployed #wifi in the #himalaya - two old pictures included.#mastodon presence in #Nepal still small (i guess) (pls shout if you are in Nepal!)
and anyway this post would be invisible to them, as my university has a #geoblock against all of Nepal ... duh :(

"Cornell Tech has received more than $7 million from Schmidt Sciences and NASA to upgrade arXiv, an open-access research repository of more than 2.8 million articles. "
It's great news for arXiv. I'm just wondering why they want actually move to the cloud:
"finish migrating to cloud infrastructure"
NREN are providing access for educational networks, I hope the cloud mentioned there is operated by a NREN operator.

> San Diego State University (SDSU) recently announced that it would become the first CENIC member—and the first research institution in the world—to enjoy a native 800 Gigabit per second (Gbps) connection to a high-performance research and education network, the network being of course CENIC’s California Research and Education Network (CalREN)
Insane capacity for sure.

This week, we joined the #RTISummit2025 in Copenhagen to highlight the role of GÉANT and our #NREN community in supporting research and innovation across Europe.
We were part of a joint booth together with the European e-Infrastructures Assembly: EGI Foundation, EUDAT, @OpenAIRE, & PRACE, showcasing how we work together to support European research, education, and innovation.
👏 Thank you to the event organisers & to all who joined us at the booth.

Data transfer graph between NKN (India's NREN) and NORDUnet (NREN for Nordic countries) https://stats.nordu.net/stat-q/r-all?q=all&name=NKN. Low data transfer between the two though.
Peering seems to be via Netherlight (https://www.surf.nl/en/services/network-connectivity/netherlight) in Amsterdam from https://nordu.net/nkn-india-and-nordunet-set-direct-peering/ (2017).

Latest LHCONE map from https://indico.cern.ch/event/772031/contributions/3442737/attachments/1853717/3047028/Interpreting_the_LHCONE_Map_LHCONE_Umea_Sweden_June_2019.v4.pdf (page 2).
NKN India (tier 2 site at VECC-SINP campus in Kolkata) and TIFR India connections can be seen on bottom left corner.

Data transfer graph between NKN (India's NREN) and CERN (birthplace of www and operators of Large Hadron Collider) https://monit-grafana-open.cern.ch/d/XoND3VQ4k/nkn?orgId=16&from=now-24h&to=now&timezone=browser&var-source=raw&var-bin=5m
Transfer rates are almost same as between GEANT-NKN as essentially they're the same link. NKN/TIFR participate in LHCONE (India has two tier 2 sites) which carries LHC data over these links for scientific research purposes.

Data transfer graph between NKN (India's NREN) and LEARN (Sri Lanka's NREN) https://kirigal.learn.ac.lk/traffic/details.php?desc=slt-b1-new&data_id=1788&data_id_v6=&sub_bw=1000&name=National%20Knowledge%20Network%20of%20India%20(1G)&swap_inout=
1Gbit/s link.

Public Graphana of transfer between NKN (India's NREN) and GEANT (essentially EU NREN backbone) https://public-brian.geant.org/d/ZyVgYFgVk/nkn?orgId=5&from=now-30d&to=now.
Transfer on both side usually seems to be averaging around 600 Mbps (lower than I expected).
From https://web.archive.org/web/20211010081515/https://www.geant.org/News_and_Events/Pages/New-NKN-international-network-to-boost-EU-India-collaboration.aspx published in 2016, NKN seems to have 2x10 Gbps capacity towards GEANT.

From NIXI (India's NREN) August end ASN transfers, I see roughly 825(x2) ASN were handed out. From AS147316 till AS148966, see https://mirrors.de.sahilister.net/pub/ftp.ripe.net/ripe/asnames/asn.txt.
The number is interesting for me, as from my previous count (for https://blog.sahilister.in/2024/09/educational-and-research-institutions-with-own-asn-in-india/) the number as of now is less than 70 for education/research ASNs.

@WACREN I feel lucky to have had the chance to know and work with him. He was truly inspiring.

🔹 stabile, sichere & performante Verbindungen
🔹 geringere Latenz & weniger Paketverluste
🔹 höhere Ausfallsicherheit im #XWiN 👉 Mehr Infos: https://www.dfn.de/neue-x-win-aussenanbindung-an-pcss/ -
Remarkably, while the country of #Denmark shows a slow global-midfield growth in #IPv6, its #NREN #DEIC #Forskningsnet shows a downwards trend in IPv6 capability

Connecting in Berlin with @DFN 🇩🇪
GÉANT team gained valuable insight into DFN’s 40+ years of enabling science for 2.5M+ users, and met designated co-CEO Alina Hain ahead of her start in October.
Followed by discussions on DFN’s role as an #NREN & its vision for GÉANT’s future.
Lise Fuhr: “The visit offered a perfect opportunity to learn about DFN’s rich history & future priorities, and how they see GÉANT evolving. These insights are crucial as we shape the future of the Association together.”

What are we (NRENs deploying SAML) gonna do about libxml2? It is now sort of unmaintained and reading the announcement for it, I can totally understand why the maintainer wants to step away.

We’ll be celebrating 20 years of international collaboration!

NKN has joined NIXI DEL and BOM https://bgp.tools/as/9885#ix \o/
First getting new upstreams and now finally joining IXes. Long overdue changes but I'm elated.

🌴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮!#CommEX25🏄♀️
Our colleague Leonie was attending the #Internet2 Community Exchange Conference last week in #Anaheim with an presentation about #AI for #NREN Services.
The event brought together experts from #research and #education networks to discuss network technologies, community initiatives, and innovative infrastructure for science and education.
We're excited to be part of the international exchange and to bring new ideas back to our community! 🤝 😊

Meet our new and re-elected members of GÉANT Project Planning Committee (GPPC) 🎉
🔹 What’s the GPPC?
The GPPC is a body of #NREN representatives that oversees and guides the planning and submission of proposals, including those supporting the #HorizonEurope GN5-FPA. The Committee ensures a broad range of expertise is represented across all key areas such as #networking, #cloud, Trust & Identity, #security, and outreach.Read more: https://connect.geant.org/2025/03/05/new-and-re-elected-members-for-geant-project-planning-committee
