From an article about electing the president by popular vote:

"The upside to the swing state system is that it forces national campaigns to focus on the diverse regional interests of places like Pennsylvania, Michigan and New Mexico instead of simply trying to appeal to the entire nation all at once."

So it's a *feature* of the current system that some states matter more than others?! Are you fucking kidding me?

  7. End the Electoral College: Amendment, Compact, or Supreme Court? #politics #npvic #scotus #electoralcollege #politicalreform Could a Supreme Court case end the Electoral College? If not then maybe it's time to support the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.

In this video they explain what is the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact , some of the key features are:

    -It preserves the electoral college.
-It is fully allowed by the Constitution without an amendment.
-Ensures the popular vote winner becomes the president every time.
-It injects the fundamental principle of one person one vote into our presidential election.

  10. @TheConversationUS standard pitch: please support #NPVIC National Popular Vote Interstate Compact in your state legislature to give popular vote winner Electoral College votes, neutralize stupid EC #ElectoralCollege

  11. @PigeonAdultman

    usatoday.com/story/graphics/20

  12. It’s that time of US election season to begin hand wringing over the #ElectoralCollege again. There have been three proposed constitutional amendments to eliminate it in the last 60 years, and public opinion generally favors removal, yet here we are still debating it. Why?

The fundamental problem is that the EC is un-amendable by design. The EC advantages smaller states, which have always outnumbered larger states and generally align politically. And the amendment process requires 3/4 of states to ratify. Even ignoring parties, the math just doesn’t work out, and it only gets harder every time the EC tips an election and becomes a partisan advantage. This is what makes the undemocraticness of the EC even more insidious — it’s untouchable from a constitutional standpoint.

That’s not to say we’re stuck with the EC as is. The #NPVIC remains tantalizingly close to coming into effect, and even with its problems, it has the potential to reshape the landscape by significantly weakening the arguments in favor of the EC. Until then, constitutional amendments are a nonstarter.

  13. If you're annoyed that they're talking about an issue like fracking that few people outside of Pennsylvania care about, but not the fact that California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Nevada are literally on fire right now, support the #NationalPopularVoteInterstateCompact

  14. Reminder to the supermajority of Americans (about 71%) who don't live in #SwingStates (say, AZ, FL, GA, IA, MI, NC, NV, OH, PA, WI):

If we abolish the #ElectoralCollege — or if enough states vote up the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (#NPVIC) — then presidential candidates would try to appeal to the most voters in the country, not just those in swing states. They'd address issues that matter to the most voters nationwide, not just those in swing states.

  15. Two states that have not yet joined the #NPVIC, Arizona and Ohio, allow for citizen-introduced ballot initiatives.

A ballpark campaign for putting the issue in front of voters in AZ and OH elections would have been $20 million. "That's Kyle Kuzma money."

  16. The Electoral College is back in the discourse, with the GOP winning only one national popular vote since 1988.

Since 2006, the #NPVIC has been building state support, and it's 61 EC votes away. Minnesota joined in 2023, Maine in 2024, Nevada underway.

  17. I am begging journalists to understand that as little as state presidential #polls matter, national polls matter even less, at least until 270 electoral votes worth of states enact the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
E.g. the percent of people in Massachusetts who plan on voting for each candidate has no bearing on the question of who's going to win. Our electoral votes will go to Harris, 100%.
Stop reporting national polls 2024 challenge.

  19. This month, Maine passed a bill joining the #NPVIC, to award its Electoral College votes to the national popular vote winner. It's at 209 / 270 votes needed.

Michigan could be next, and if so the pact could be clinched with votes from NV, AZ, OH, and VA. I took a look at the map earlier this year for subscribers at @flaminghydra:

  20. Big news: Maine joins the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact! The inter-state agreement now includes states with 209 electoral votes, and will come into effect when enough states join that include 270 votes. Making progress!

  21. "Maine votes to join multi-state agreement to elect the president by popular vote"

It's not passed into law yet, but seems likely at this point.

This map shows a credible path to achieving 270 votes before the 2028 election. If you're in one of the blue states on this map, please write to your state legislators and governor!
