Today I took a fun day trip to Denmark with a friend - for both of us this was our first time visiting the country, and a great opportunity to go on some fun railway lines!
After travelling on some pleasant but largely unremarkable S-Bahn trains of the HVV (Hamburger Verkehrsverbund), and another double-decker Regional Express train operated by NAH.SH (Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig-Holstein), we arrived at Flensburg/Flensborg. This is the start of a Danske Statsbaner service to Fredericia; we didn't have enough time to go that deep into Denmark, but we decided to take it as far as Tinglev.
Our train to Tinglev was the Danish IC3 DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit), the concept of which I honestly find hilarious: unlike most diesel trains, which have electric traction motors or hydraulic torque converters to adjust the power output for optimal efficiency, the IC3 units have 12-speed mechanical gearboxes made by ZF Friedrichshafen. Hearing the trains rev-up and then shift to a higher gear as they accelerate just brings a smile to my face for its abject idiosyncracy!
The interior design of these trains is just fantastic. The seats are comfortable (whether reclined or not) and line up with the trains' large windows, and the passenger information system in use is basic, but clear and reliable. Both a train manager and a cleaner were present, despite the vehicle being just three coaches long, which I think is a very impressive level of service.
When we reached Padborg, the first station in Denmark, a group of Danish police officers boarded the train to conduct border controls. This is despite the fact that the recently-introduced Danish suspension of Schengen supposedly ended twelve days ago. And I would hardly call it a proper border control either - the police officer didn't even look at the contents of my passport, but was satisfied to see just the cover!
Tinglev itself is endearingly sleepy, and its status as a location served by an "Intercity" train line is slightly dubious. As far as we could tell, it had only two supermarkets, a very closed-looking pizza restaurant, a charity shop and a pharmacy (also closed) in its commercial area. A short walk away was a lovely little wood with footpaths crossing it, and leading to a landscaped auditorium in a clearing. So after an hour of walking around this quaint town, we went back to the station to catch the train back towards Germany: another IC3. This time, the border checks did not happen in spite of automated PA announcements imploring passengers to get their travel documents ready.
Yet again we travelled across Schleswig-Holstein, this time in the opposite direction, during an largely uneventful two hour journey back to Hamburg. Seeing the České dráhy ComfortJet train zooming past on its way to Copenhagen was a fun moment!
Our conclusion: a highly enjoyable (and admittedly very silly) day trip! And I am personally very happy to have finally taken a journey on what is arguably Denmark's most eccentric rolling stock.
