I finished this book on the plane back from Istanbul. It explores some pretty interesting themes including radical democracy, anticapitalism, and “first contact”
It is a challenging, thought-provoking book with many many great lines. Be prepared for some self-reflection!

Currently I am listening to this very engaging history of Istanbul in preparation for my visit in a couple of weeks:
Istanbul: City of Majesty at the Crossroads of the World by Thomas F. Madden
It has a very good balance between detail and pace.

"Underground Empire: How America Weaponized the World Economy" captures excellently a lot which has been wrong with the world in the past few decades.
"Thinking in Systems: A Primer" is a classic book which is also beautifully written and inspiring.

One more book recommendation: “Sea of Tranquility” by Emily St. John Mandel. Another outstanding read… sci-fi/time travel, but really a story about finding purpose and dealing with loneliness. A different vibe from Scalzi’s book, but another excellent (and quick!) read.

John Scalzi’s (@scalzi ) latest short story is an absolute masterpiece. Sci-fi with an unusually philosophical bent.
Bonus: if you’re not a heavy reader, it’s only 25 pages or so, and free if you have Prime.
All in all, a pretty outstanding way to spend 30 minutes of your time.

I am a fan of Naomi Novik’s Scholomance series so I decided to go back to one of her acclaimed older fantasy books for my trip to Vancouver listened to most of it on the planes to and fro. The other book I am bringing into this new year is the popular fantasy novel "City of Stairs" by Robert Jackson Bennet. It is a bit of a slow burn, but things really started picking up at the halfway point. It is the first of a trilogy.
