The movie #Novocaine (2025) is now streaming on #Amazon #PrimeVideo.
It's one of those movies that I chose NOT to watch when it was in the theaters because I thought it would be worth the price of admission & I was right.
The movie is about a bank manager who has a condition which prevents him from feeling any pain & who falls in love with a teller at his bank who befriends & makes love to him but who also happens to belong to a gang including her brother that robs the bank.
The bank manager doesn't know this & when he thinks she's been kidnapped by the robbers, he goes on a ridiculous mission to "save" her which involves his enduring all sorts of horrific injuries, which he can ignore because of his condition.
The movie is played in a tongue-in-cheek & comedic way which takes the edge off of all of the blood & gore but also makes taking the movie impossible to take seriously.
I'd rate it a 5 out of 10, which is begin generous.

Quiero hablar de la Navidad. Me la rafanfinfla.
Aunque confieso que me gusta ver cine de terror en ese tiempo. Hay una oscuridad aprovechable ahí. Claro, entre tantas luces las sombras asoman.
Un hito navideño -creo que ni había nacido para su estreno- fue justamente un largo (y tanto) de acción con dos ejes principales (amén de otros tantos también imperdibles), transcurría en plena Navidad y en un escenario delimitado, un feo edificio de oficinas.
La jungla de cristal es un clásico indiscutible por estas y otras razones.
La hazaña fue tan alta que no ha habido coño a acercarse a la bandera que plantó en esa -concreta- cumbre. Quizá ahora sí.
El gamberro, ángel y demonio a la vez, de Jack Quaid se ha soltado con la experiencia adquirida en los sets de su serie y está eligiendo películas donde su negrísima vis cómica y el cine que hacía su padre se unen... para hostiarse sin víctimas de por medio, como en Tom & Jerry.
Novocaine podría ser un complemento a La jungla (ni sustitutivo ni relevo), lo es de hecho. Una peli de acción que transcurre en Navidad y en 4-5 espacios urbanos cerrados (en su mayoría).
La cinta de Dan Berk y Robert Olsen tiene sus propios giros y ritmo (amén de ser más breve que la de Willis, y más pesada), tenía que ser así para resultar genuina.
Bien: Novocaine, el prota, tiene un superpoder trash al que se le saca todo el jugo. Los malos tienen más vidas que los cacos de Solo en casa, de hecho, hay guiños. Los giros son predecibles pero se presentan con gracia.
Regu: exceso de metraje, el final se repite; menos ajo, porfa. La Navidad aparece tímidamente y la olvidas. El guion no da espacio a las secundarias.
Mal: no le abrieron agujerito para la sonda...
Es una peli fresquísima de las que ya no se hacen pero que duda en exceso en hasta dónde emular a sus referentes y desde cuándo ser ella misma.

Puntos extra a #Novocaine por ser del escaso #cine actual que desarrolla decentemente las relaciones y motivaciones de los personajes en vez de plantarte estereotipos que con una sola mirada ya son mejores amigos o almas gemelas.
Una historia además en la que una discapacidad se convierte al juntarse con una determinación inagotable en una virtud. Alguna pizca surrealista, pero cosas más raras se han visto como la que comentaré después. -
Hace poco crucé por los carteles de un cine y vi el poster de #Novocaine, así que inmediatamente atraídos la hemos visto.
Aparte de la ilusión de ver a Jack Quaid (Star Trek, The Boys, Oppenheimer, Scream, etc) disfrazado de Max Payne, o el juego de palabras que hacen con su nombre y un anestésico, esta película tiene un lujo de detalles y humor que la hacen un gozo de ver si no te repele el gore.
Imaginad Crank pero protagonizada por un chico sin habilidades extraordinarias pero muy motivado. 👌 -
I know the purpose of movies like #Novocaine is pure dumb fun. It's a shallow pop-corn movie and some sort of homage to Max Payne. But the amount of plot holes is appalling. And it probably will have a sequel while absolutely awesome movies like #AlitaBattleAngel stuck in production limbo.
