In 1981, I travelled to Israel, a German, to participate in a science camp for young people. When I was born, the Holocaust was just 19 years in the past. In 1981, a mere 36 years had passed. At Yad Vashem, all documents were in German - my language.
Nonetheless, one evening that summer, a family invited me, a German whom they'd never met, to their home to eat and celebrate the beginning of Shabbat with them.
It does not change what happened. Nor what follows. But it's hope.
