Something I wrote a couple of Remembrance days ago, thought I'd repost again this year. I see a lot of posts remembering those who fought in WWII, but what about those who fought before then? Those are the ones that I think are more likely to be unintentionally forgotten.

Grandpa was a #medical Captain in the #Canadian military. This photo is from 1933. He didn't serve overseas (though his brother did). Instead, he stayed in Canada where his medical expertise was put to use treating soldiers who returned with STDs.
At the time, syphilis and gonorrhea were at epidemic levels, killing thousands in Canada and causing blindness and other issues in the soldiers, and their wives/partners. And this was during an era where it was taboo to talk about anything to do with sex.
This meant no public communication of STDs.
So, grandpa veered into public #health, insisting very public-oriented information campaigns be launched. A body called the Health League of Canada was formed that promoted prevention of STDs, newspaper articles were written, and there was even a movie made. Called Damaged Lives, there were separate screenings at Massey Hall for men and women.
Anyway, not all the #war efforts were overseas. There were issues to deal with at home, including some consequences.

(Usually on the day of his 'arrival', which usually is the weekend after #SintMaarten (#SaintMartin; held on #November11'th it's the #Dutch equivalent/predecessor of #Halloween's #TrickOrTreat AFAIK), and in some cases repeated periodically till the 5th.)
This probably kinda lead to not putting your shoe on the actual #SinterklaasAvond celebration on the 5th, but rather a #juteZak (#jute #gunnySack) with more/bigger presents.
Belgians probably kept it more traditional.
